Ive found this site helpful in the past as well http://www.seat61.com/
well for me dover is best they have so many crossings if your late or early you get moved to that boat its bloody cheap as the £29 covers a car a 5 people the only drawback with dover are the bloody customs right wankers.
if you dont wanna go by car dover to calais as foot passenger then train to calais nord i think then next change at brussels then to amsterdam.
or get a cabin but thats overnight way too long in my book, then theres harwich to hook of holland boats too long its quicker to go from dover.
it has to be car. last 2 trips though were with euro tunnel and they are a bit qicker but £49 for a single.
eurostar is just to bloody expensive
but main advantage driving from calais or dunkrirke is you can make a detour and pop into eindhoven rotterdam dreda. breda is only a 20 min detour so would be my pick and pax de boot had some alright NTB

Stuart1976- thnx so much for that encyclopedia, thats amazing
im wading thru all the options, for this trip its more about getting there as fast as possible with least stress/things to go wrong than just the cost, Im tempted to drive and be independent on the other hand as the only driver and with me and the missus only Im not sure its any cheaper, plus ive got all the stress of getting us there and back in one piece without getting lost etc, Im still getting thru your wonderful list though and weighing it all up as I go....once again cheers mate, you are a star..
