I booked this place a few years back then read the reviews which were horrific regards rats ect.

So therefore I was shitting it however it was top notch for the price.

I didn't see any rats and we ate loads of food in the room, the room was massive easily the biggest one i've ever stayed in Dam and was very clean absolutly no complaints from me but I might be the lucky one.

pretty much my experience there to bennybacker, minus the large room - mine was tiny

I have to agree with Bennybacker - I have no personal experience of this place, but I stayed at the nearby Dam Hotel one time, and despite all the online comments, found it was just fine! If I'd read the reviews first, I'd have probably given it a miss, so you can never tell...

A lot really depends on your expectations in an Amsterdam Hotel. After many, many years, nothing really phases me now - with the exception of the travesty that is the Quentin Arrivee... I'd rather shit in my hand and clap, than stay there again.

I've been with friends who look horrified at the prospect of many of the legendary staircases in this fair city, but that's Amsterdam. Part of the charm, you might say... :P

If you don't like the idea of rats, pick a hotel with a cat. In fact, hotels should include this in the list of amenities... Perhaps a little paw print next to the symbol for WC and TV, so we know the rodents are under pressure here!!

I stay a lot at the Vijaya, which has had some terrible reviews on certain sites from folk who seem to expect 5 star luxury for a 2 star establishment, but I love the place. The rooms aren't the biggest, and the (free) breakfast isn't the most sumptuous I've ever had, but it works for me. I've never seen a cat though... Mind you, it is an Indian Restaurant as well, so.... No! I didn't mean that!!!

To be honest though cisco, I'd probably go with Abba if you can... if it gets the thumbs up on here, then I'd put more faith in that than many of the hotel review sites!

Hotel Vijaya is testing my patience.

I was told to e-mail them regarding my cancellation and figured I'd also inquire about a room for my re-booked days, figuring if they see I'm trying to re-stay with them they'll cut me some slack about my last minute cancellation and not charge me anything.

Still waiting on a reply after 3 days. :x

With only so many rooms available for the time I'll be there this is the only thing left I need to do is secure this room and these guys are taking too damn long to respond. Annoyed.

In regards to shitty Amsterdam hotel reviews:

I've got to laugh about people booking 1 & 2 star rooms and being shocked that they are small or have a bathroom in the hall. And whenever I see complaints about steep staircases it makes me slap my forehead. :D

It's Amsterdam, what the hell do they expect? :D

I'd drop 'em another email Fenix...

Maybe something happened to their emails, or.. well, I have no idea really... I'm just trying to think...

I sent them a message yesterday to change my dates from 21-24 April to 22-24 April, as soon as I knew what flight I had rebooked, and had a reply first from booking.com 20 minutes later, then one from Vijaya itself, confirming receipt of the email and the change to my booking 9 minutes after that.

Dunno mate - they've always been good as gold with me - perhaps their mailbox was full from all the change requests over the last few days and it got bounced back or something? Try them again fella, that's all I can suggest - I don't know myself if I'm going to be charged for the day I'm missing - the updated booking info reads;
Single Room for guest *****
Arrival 2010-04-22 (was 2010-04-21)
price 125 (was 185)
Comments Guest cannot arrive until 2010-04-22 due to flight cancellations. (was unspecified)
They might charge the extra €60 to my card, or ask for it there - if they say nothing, I will gladly pay the reduced amount and spend the difference on a truly determined effort to harm my brain cells in Basjoes... 8)

Hah - steep staircases! Nearly 10 yrs ago I came over with a group of people who had never been before but had always wanted to... At the airport, one of them turned up at check-in with a trunk  - I kid you not.
After I had finished rolling around on the floor pissing meself at the prospect of Amsterdam hotel vs "trunk from hell", I was waiting for the first realisation of what was about to happen when we checked in to Hotel Beursstraat and found his room was on the top floor!

I still smile about it now... I was smiling all the way there on the plane, and didn't stop even when we had to wait for everyone in baggage claim who'd ignored my advice and brought heavy cases with them...

Unless your hotel is brand new, and probably out of the centrum, or you're paying a lot of €'s for those 4 and 5 star places - prepare to climb narrow, steep stairs, folks! You're in Amsterdam and all these narrow, tall little canalside houses that help make the place look so picturesque also help make your leg muscles work for their stay!!!

Give 'em another go fella - did you book with them direct or through a booking agent? I went through booking.com, linked via this site - if so, they should be able to sort you out...

Hope you get it sorted!

I have stayed there before, and am booked to stay with them again May 2 - 8. It's not that bad of a place to stay, and it is definitely smoker friendly. It's not the nicest place ever, but if you've ever stayed in a US motel, than this place will not bother you.
