Burger Porn or Why I don't get the buzz over Burger Bar...

Thought I might share some pix from a heavy metal bar in my neck of the woods. All of the images and descriptions in this thread are shamelessly stolen from the web, worthless wretch that I am. The Blago Burger (named for the former Illinois Governor, the Hon. Rod Blagojevich):
Image

"This gubernatorial-inspired monstrosity is made with a 10 oz. hamburger patty, thick sliced bologna and yellow mustard between two grilled cheese sandwiches (made with American cheese and wonder bread). When the burger comes out, one of the sandwiches has a large dollar sign written in mustard. The cost of this beast: $10, but Kuma's is 'negotiable.'"

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And finally, the aptly named Bongzilla, in all its unabashed, heartstopping glory:

"1/4 lb. Sheboygan Bratwurst, Smoked Gouda, Carmelized Onion, Dusseldorf mustard, Jalapeno Apple Chutney"

those look

I've been to Burger Bar twice. The first time was the central one, and it was the best burger I've eaten in ages. The second time I went to the one near Rembrandplein, and ordered the same thing as last time. It was very good, but not amazing.

Maybe it was just bad luck, but I suspect the chefs are better at the central Burger Bar...

Titus - I'm honoured!

Love some of those burgers - when are they opening a franchise either near me or even better in Amsterdam though???

My only problem with a few of those culinary masterpieces is the over-use of green things.... You know, those "healthy" ingredients!

My ideal;

Bread roll (could be made of meat like the KFC Double Down).

Meat.

Cheese (optional) - could be regarded as health food.

Bacon. Yes I know it's still meat, but I like it.

Ketchup. Just a little, mind... after all, it's made with (shh!) tomatoes.

No salad. No mayo. No pickle.

Maybe a little fried onion - careful though - this is another vegetable-type thing.

Second layer of bread (like the idea of the pretzel roll though - top marks for variety!) - Again this could be substituted for another layer of meat...

Side order of fried potatoes - chunks are good. Slices, also good. Tiny, wimpy, skinny fries - only as a last resort! Vlaamse Frites? Excellent choice.

Repeat as above.....

The Led Zeppelin looks great - but I'd have to lose the pickles. Mmmm - pulled pork! Fantastic!! :P :P

The Pig Destroyer - yep. Tick!

The Mastodon - yep - again, we're heading in the right direction...

Now then, the Lair of the Minotaur... well - I gotta love the brie with a nice bit of pancetta, and the bourbon soaked pears? Nice! In fact I would probably add the liquor to my list of fave ingredients, perhaps in a nice little side bowl for dunking?

I can see why you like The Pantera, titus - it looks very tasty!

The Axe Handle - oh yes. But why are there green things on the plate, dammit???

Sleep - I'd have to have two - but lose that stupid (bay?) leaf off the top FFS!

And again, The Atlas Moth -
as Kuma's Sous Chef Luke Tobias puts it, 'It's a towering inferno of flesh and waffles.
Nice - but greens? Collared or otherwise - it's just wrong!

Finally - the Bongzilla - looks a bit like a dream I had once! Cheeky combination there - I might even try that one whole!

Right, now my saliva is dripping off the keyboard, and my inspiration has been fired up - it's off to the kitchen!

Nice one titus - now that's what I call eye-candy!

IMO most of the pics posted above are a little much for me. I eat at the Burger Bar because they keep it simple, what a burger is.

Peace,

i agree with balou i like my burgers simple...or atleast simple compared to those. for me cheese, mushrooms, bacon and grilled onions on a roll/bun/toast and im good to go. no special sauces other than ketchup and either colemans mustard or brown mustard. like balou said burger bar keeps it simple/old school. i like in n out simple too. no eggs for me. once in awhile i'll throw some fries IN the burger though..maybe some guacamole.
educating myself and waiting for the next trip.

Hey treetop. It's a little bar with an even littler kitchen called Kuma's Corner in Chicago. They market themselves as a heavy metal bar and everyone inside is inked and pierced (mostly). Metal is playing constantly at a fairly loud volume. They don't take reservations and don't ever intend to expand into a larger space, so the wait can be as long as 90 min. to 2 hrs. I topped out at 90 min. before leaving myself. It's sort of like de Klos in that they have no desire in being the next Pizzeria UNO.

Beer selection is great with several well regarded local microbrews in evidence as well as a few Belgians, an aged bourbon, all on draft. They have more in bottles.

Anyway the burgers are really great though you'd think that with the abundance of toppings, the essence of what constitutes beefiness would be lost, but the combinations work surprising well. I can personally attest to the Bongzilla as being a simply scrumptious creation and in general, safe to eat particularly if you have an ambulance standing by.

Kuma's link

They have an amusing credo printed on all their menus:

"TRAVEL MORE, AND STOP SPENDING MONEY THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY CRAP THAT YOU DON'T NEED TO IMPRESS PEOPLE WHO DON'T CARE.Go to "CAPS" meetings in your neighborhood, Vote locally and Make a difference in your community, instead of boring the PEOPLE AROUND YOU with your insane theories about military involvement in parts of the world that you're unable to even point to on a map. Take a moment to discover some great local bands like "Minsk", "Indian", "raise the red lantern", "millions", "LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR", "SWEET COBRA", "PLAGUEBRINGER", AND THE ALMIGHTY "MACABRE". IF YOU'RE DESIRING MUSICAL ENLIGHTENMENT, EXPLORE THE CATALOG OF "SEVENTH RULE RECORDS". A CHICAGO LABEL! PLACE THOSE AROUND YOU BEFORE SELF AND LIFE WILL NEVER BE A DISSAPOINTMENT.

"AS MY HANDS DROP THE LAST DESPERATE PEN, IN SOME CHEAP ROOM, THEY WILL FIND ME THERE AND NEVER KNOW MY NAME, MY MEANING, NOR THE TREASURE OF MY ESCAPE" -HENRY CHINASKI

Death to Miller and Budweiser... they are over-produced and inferior products that prevent passionate craftsmen from sharing their gifts with all of us."

Hey DaveS,

So as to accomodate your dietary requirements may I recommend one Led Zeppelin, hold the pickle, and substitute perhaps, some pancetta, or a fried egg? The possibilities are indeed exciting.

Also, as an FYI, the jalapeno apple chutney that accompanies the augustine Bongzilla arrives on the side in a tiny plastic cup. So, really, there is nothing to prevent you from achieving total burger orgasm according to the guidelines you so painstakingly set forth.

If you ever visit Chicago, yer first burger's on me. Hopefully, yer health insurance should cover the second.

Now that's something I haven't seen in the states - cider...

Every time I've asked if they serve cider in places in the US, they give me a funny look, as if I'm talking gibberish! I then have to explain what cider is to most of them - the alcoholic stuff anyway. Is this something that just doesn't really exist over there?

BTW, if you're in the UK and want a good cider (for a man anyway), DON'T ask for a Babycham! It's not that it doesn't taste ok, it's always been regarded as a ladies drink for as long as I can remember!! (Dry) Blackthorn is pretty common over here though, and it was funny seeing Boddies (Boddingtons) on their beer menu as well...

If I'm ever in Chicago, I know where to go!
