Ever been socially persecuted for your pot smoking habits?

I'm not talking about tobacco. Purely marijuana.
Many of my friends don't smoke pot, and/or they couple it with the likes of cocaine and heroin. I was really surprised to see how my mate reacted when he noticed I had a bong at my house. He said it was "dirty" and that he would never smoke from one. I argued that it wasn't a crack pipe, and that I'd never smoke anything in it besides marijuana.
Last weekend I went away to a friends beach house. His American girlfriend came up as well, and she was just over the moon that I had brought weed for the weekend. But my two mates, as well as the people who came in and out of the house over the next two-three days, pretty much acted like as if marijuana was just absolutely putrid, and that they couldn't believe we smoked it. I actually felt a little awkward smoking it, and was totally out of my comfort zone - I didn't get a good high.
Now I'm not at all critical of their views on the drug - it's a free country - but I did feel socially persecuted because I was high. My argument is that I'd rather smoke weed than pump my body full of toxins and alcohol, which is what most of the people were doing. One real smart arse (who I didn't know - was a friend of the guy who owned the house) was just observing me with such precision as I prepared my bong, and then said with a big smirk on his face that he was "intrigued". I hate it when people are patronizing.
I don't think I'll ever spend a weekend with this same group of people again. It's a real shame that I don't have many pot smoking friends. My girlfriend will smoke occasionally with me, but that's probably once every month.
I was just really shocked at the reaction I got to it. I definitely felt like I wasn't welcome for a while, and it was a complete 180 before I started smoking; we were laughing and joking about football before I took the weed out, and then everyone just changed.
I'm also really...disappointed?...at the pot culture where I am. My city is a conservative "nanny" state and it's only getting worse by the looks of it.

yeah, I know what you mean... there is some of my friends who I don't smoke in front of, or talk about weed/smoking. I feel they would look down on me because of it. Not that I really care what people think about me, but I value friendships, and its not their fault they are brainwashed.
Most average people have a phobia which is caused by the media and the drug laws. Mentioning any kind of "drug" makes them picture junkies and crackwhores
I'm from Melbourne too btw. It sucks to hear its still very conservative. Mind you, I've noticed some Melb crowds where pretty much everyone smokes weed and won't even look twice if you light up a spliff (unless they want some hehe)

I think we have all been in similar situations. I do find it interesting though, in an effort to NOT be judged for your drug of choice, you manage to harshly judge a few other.....just sayin'

I was judging them for judging me. Not because they DON'T smoke marijuana or because they were smoking alcohol instead.
And are you referring to my arse hole comment? He was being really smug and patronizing, and I don't respect that. He was a great guy otherwise.
I would never ever judge someone for not wanting to do a drug. In fact, I don't even think twice when someone rejects a hit. I look at it the same way as if someone turned down a beer; no biggy.

I am saying you are judging other drugs, not other people....

All the time, some people just don't want thier mind changed. It suits them to believe thier own convictions rather than open up to the possibilty they were lied too.
For some strange reason, people don't want to be proved wrong?
I always thought being proved wrong was a good thing, other wise, you never learn anything.
Anyway, fuck em, if you're happy, the world is happy.

I can't say with 100% certainty that I feel socially persecuted but...
Because of the way that smoking weed is generally perceived by people, I am very careful of who I will do it around.
I'll either do it on my own or with only my closest pals.
By generally percieved I mean the usual crap : you're a junkie/druggie, must use harder drugs, must mix with criminals or do other types of crime, is a waster or loser!
I have a responsible job and am proud of who I am because I think i'm a nice guy but unfortunately those with no experience of MJ are brainwashed by the media.
It's a very sorry situation!
Narrow minds=Narrow thoughts!

It's disappointing. I work 12-14 hour days, I own my own online-based publishing house, I have a mortgage and lots of responsibility, I'm only 24. And at the end of the day, I like to cut up some fruit, get my laptop, smoke a joint, relax; and it's the best damn thing in the world. The funny thing is, my friends judge me when I tell them that, but they go home and drink full bottles of red wine without even blinking...

All the time.
I am a manager in a large financial investment company and don't talk about it at work. They couldn't handle it and would not react positively.
It is them who are ignorant, if they knew I go home & rip a fat bonghit or 10, or sometimes spark a fattie on the way home they for sure wouldn't respect me as they do now. I don't drink as I'm allergic, but indulge daily in my favourite pastime which for some is still unacceptable.
Society must learn what we already know if things are to move forward.

I'm too old to give a damn what anyone else thinks, at least in a social context.
At work however its a different matter as I am one of the unlucky guys who get random drug and alcohol tested at work
In the seven years since the testing policy became part of our conditions I have been tested once--five days after I had just finished a lump of poor quality almost soap bar-ish hash.
I passed the test
I draw two conclusions 1/ The hash was of such poor quality I never had enough THC or whatever in my urine and passed legitimately. Or 2/ They never sent away my sample for test assuming that a guy my age wouldnt be on drugs anyway.
Either way I was worried sick for a week until my boss informed me I had passed
So hows that for feeling isolated because of hash smoking
Nowadays I try and restrict my weed smoking to two or three isolated ''Binges '' a year therefore cutting down the probability of being caught
I know folk will say just quit your job, but Ive got 37 years service with the pension and all that goes with it

Shock horror!! It appears a lot of us loser stoners have responsibilities and manage to lead highly productive proffesional and personal lives.
Whatever you guys do don't let the word spread......who knows what'll happen!!!

Wait a minute...I know what'll happen...nothing!!
We'll still be persecuted for enjoying something that:
a) does not cause aggressive violent behaviour
b) does very little damage to the human body (without tobacco)
c) Is not physically addictive
and most importantly brings people together (like all of us)and promotes happiness
