Weed and Food Pairings

Post by geekymonkey »

It occurred to me that this might generate more discussion over here. For my hubby's birthday I'm making him and some friends a meal with weed pairings instead of wine pairings.

For people who are into flavors and effects, I would love suggestions of weeds and or hashes to pair with each dish. Please, help!

This is the menu-

Tom Yum Goong Soup (Thai soup with shrimp and mushrooms in spicy coconut broth) with individual joints, because I want the steam from the soup and the aroma from the weed to mix in the air.

I'm also thinking something hazy, pretty purely up to get things rolling. I'd like something citrus-y with a little herb or funky notes. Maybe super silver haze or super lemon haze or something like that?

Nam Sod (Ginger and Ground Pork Salad with Fresh Mint and Coriander).

This dish has nice strong savory and herbal flavors, and a bit of a greasy smoke might be nice with it. Something like sour diesel, nyc diesel, or maybe even a kush? I'm worried that all of those might be a little intense for a second-course smoke.

Flank Steak with Thai Pesto (Coriander and Peanut) and Peanut Noodles

Bong hits for this course, because people will need to use a knife, a fork, and a fair bit of concentration to eat at this point. I'm really open to suggestions here, at this point in the meal I could go a lot of ways with the smoke.

Watermelon Salad with lemongrass and mint granita.

This will be cool, crunchy, sweet, and easy to eat. I think joints again. Of course a really fruity smoke for this point. If I can find something like the Utopia Haze from last year that can really cut through to deliver a clearing elevated high, that will be the choice.

Coconut Caramels, Chili Ginger Dark Chocolate Truffles, and Vietnamese Iced Coffee- The best I can find of the sweet heavy strains like: white chocolate, chocolope, vanilla kush. Perhaps even a sampler or pair of the two. At this point I think we'll just grind up a bunch a people can free pack and roll, whatever they are in the mood for at that point.

Thanks for your suggestions, Geeky

uh marry me lol

hawaiian haze with the starter? pineapply and not too overbearingly strong
deffo some hash with coffee. Some high, clean & piney moroccan gold like HIA or Twizzla from the green place. You could even finely grate hash into the coffee (does this work??)

Geeky, huge respect for even thinking like that

Never heard of anyone else talk about smoker sommeliere skills. But, as it goes, this is something I've tried on a few occasions.

Firstly, I found it easier to pair smokes to drinks. So one approach is to match drinks to your food the normal way, then match the smoke to the drinks. After all, if you actually smoke whilst eating, you won't really taste the weed or the food properly. Otherwise, smoke between the courses, and think of the aftertastes and effects of subsequent courses.

If you're serious about matching weed to food, you might actually want to use herbs in the cooking process too (eg you'll get much better aromas from putting weed in your soup than just filling the room with smoke at the same time)

Tom Yum
Early on in the meal, you want to unleash a mad-munchies kinda strain (Blueberry strains always work for me). But I can't help think you want a more Thai-like herb here. Maybe some Chocolope or some higher grade Thai import if you can find it. Steep your coconut oil with thai buds, and maybe add a last minute sprinkle fresh, as garnish (if it's clean, organic etc!)

Or maybe serve your soup in a bong! Take a hit of thai through it, then drink the soup :D

Nam sod
Mint and coriander say Arjans Haze (3) to me. Though something south african (durban poison or even power plant) might lend a nice aniseedy twist. You could chop a tiny bit of fresh herb in with the mint etc, won't get you high raw, but will be more evident in flavour.

Or maybe serve your nam sod, wrapped in rice paper, like giant doobies and pass them around amongst a few real spliffs!

Steak wth coriander and peanuts
Savoury bong hits? Gotta be Cheese time. Maybe cook down a bit of afghan hash with the peanut sauce too.

Or maybe dust the steaks with ground up herb etc and get that authentic charred smokey twang when it hits the pan!

Watermelon salad with lemongrass and mint
Some nice grapefruity NYC Diesel or a lemon skunk? Maybe in a vaporiser for a lovely hot/cold fruity contrast

Or maybe russian roulette with vapor bags, some just mint, some just lemongrass, and some kick ass haze dusted with bubblehash!

Desserts
Got kushes written all over it - vanilla kush a great option, or any other earthy, creamy indica (peak 19, Ice Cream, Bubba Kush) maybe with a little sprinkling of soft, chocolately top grade moroccan hash cooked into your truffles as well.

And although I'm not usually a fan, a chocolate or vanilla blunt wrap might slip down quite nicely at this point.

Have fun putting it all together, sounds absolutely awesome. If my girlfriend did that for me, I'd propose, there and then! Though, to be fair, the soup-in-a-bong thing might be a bit disconcerting.

Thats fucking nasty mate, sorry. Have you seen used bong water? now why would you want to have than in your soup? and why would you want to consume the crap the bong normally takes out. theres a reason for the filtration.

That was meant tongue-in-cheek (or fingers-down-throat!). I'm not seriously suggesting anyone drinks soup from a bong...

... where would you put the goldfish?

I've hit red wine through a bong, then drank it, it was fine and tasty. I think the idea is not to use the bong for a week (or even more than a couple of times before consumption

Jack Daniels can be used too - or so I've heard.

This is all excluding soup, of course :D

The NY Times just published an article attempting to define an "haute stoner cuisine" movement, describing how various elite chefs have reinvented and re-imagined various comfort foods due to being inspired in some way by cannabis. While I'm not persuaded that this is a genuine trend, they managed to secure a few quotes from such culinary luminaries as Anthony Bourdain and David Chang (of NY's Momfuku) on the subject.

Here's the article.

Thought of this thread when I read the piece...
Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

well I do have a drink suggestion, this always goes PERFECTLY with a smoke. This is my own invention, its kind of a mix between a gin & tonic and a mojito.

heres what you need -

- gin
- ice
- limes
- lime cordial (the good kind made for cocktails, not that neon green rubbish from the supermarket)
- fresh mint leaves
- tonic

Start with the ice, fill the glass about halfway. Top it up with gin (1 or 2 shots, up to you), then squeeze in 1/2 a lime, pour in a dash of cordial, and tear up a few mint lives, throw that in. Stir, then top it up with the tonic. Thats it!

For me, this is the ideal smoking drink... somehow the combination of sour, sweet, cold, with a touch of herbal flavour from the mint... it soothes your throat and refreshes your taste buds :D
