Some of you have hit the nail on the head!
This issue is ENTIRELY about sovereignty!
why was he tried in usa, when he was operating in canada????.
the world police saves us again, what would the world do without the usa
Because, when the fucking Yank government says jump, our government says "How high?" (No pun intended)
We have a Tory government, who have heavily borrowed policy from the Republicans and to them its a win-win situation. They get to kiss Yank government ass and we are rid of a strong anti-prohibitionist.
The Yanks wanted Emery because he also funded the US Marijuana Party and was outspoken about prohibition.
QUESTION: If it was simply for selling seed to the Yanks, then why haven't all the other seed sellers (In Canada, Holland, the UK, and so on) who also sell to the US been arrested?
ANSWER: they keep their fucking mouths shut, simply pocketing their money from that ridiculously lucrative business, and, in NO way try to help end prohibition!
I think their rationale was that he was selling to US customers. But of course this argument has more holes than swiss cheese.
whats next? arresting a coffeeshop owner because a US citizen tried to bring weed back with them?
Actually, think of this analogy.
You sell and ship bottles of booze to countries where booze is illegal. (Say, for example, to an Islamic theocracy, such as Iran, or Saudi Arabia. Would you expect your government to deliver you to Iran/Saudi Arabia to do your jail time? Can you see the American Government saying "Okay Iran/Saudi Arabia, we'll send you one of our citizens to face punishment in your country"
Not fucking likely!!
It is called extra-territorial judiciality..It has always been part and parcel of American foreign policy and probably will allways be so.
....And it means that Yank foreign policy is such that they think they can do what the fuck they want!!
Imagine that same theocracy arresting Americans for not blocking foreigners access to the content on US porn sites?
Ain't gonna happen!
Pretty sure it's because he sold seeds to people in the US which is illegal, to be fair it's very draconian of the US but the law is the law and he knew what he was doing, I know it doesn't justify it in anyway but he's a scam artist anyway, I've read countless accounts of people being sold shit seeds and not only that but he sold them at extortionate prices.
I think he's ok with all this as well as he's become a bit of a 'martyr' in the pot world because of it as well and only helps his legend
.
Well, logic dictates that if he was a "scam artist" then the US case is moot, RIGHT???
I am not saying he was an angel. Some people had a beef with him.
However, there is NOT one seed shop that does not garner bad reviews. The same goes for coffeeshops. For every coffesshop that most people think is the Cats Ass, someone thinks it is shit/had a bad experience/claims to have been ripped off.
IMO, Emery did seem, somewhat, the "author of his own legend", and seemed to enjoy his notoriety, but I have been in his shop many times and he was always genuinely friendly and I never got ripped off. He was, above all else, a businessman, but he also did good things for the legalisation movement, both in Canada and the US. Futhermore, he declared all his taxes and was completly transparent the he was selling marijuana seeds AND Health Canada recomended Canadian Medical MJ uses to buy their seeds from him. (A government endorsement.....how the fuck can they send him to the states?).
This issue has nothing to do with Marc Emery, but rather with national sovereignty. I am sick of our governemnnt always caving into Yankee bullshit. They do this all the time rather than telling them to Fuck off. If Marc Enery commited a crime then he should serve his time in a Canadian jail, which he was willing to do.
Finally, he was an intelligent and extremely articulate anti-prohibitionist. Even baked out of his fucking skull he could rationally and articulately discuss any manner of issues. This is something the legalisation movement needs, because we have to sell the legalisation issue to non-stoners. Having some inarticulate fuckoff as a spokeperson, while perhaps amusing to us, will set back the legalisation movement.
