Coffeeshops for a non-smoker

My wife and I will be in the Dam for 9 days in February, and I'm looking for some coffeeshops that you guys think she'll enjoy as a non-smoker. We were there together for 3 days in Sept 09, and while we were in more than a dozen different shops over the 3 days, the only ones she really liked and remembers distinctly were Amnesia (for the cool loungey environment), The Dolphin (we went downstairs), and the Bluebird.

I remember her saying she didn't enjoy Grey Area because it was way too cramped and Mellow Yellow was dirty and too hot upstairs, and the rest of the places were basically unremarkable enough that she didn't care one way or the other. For example, there are many reasons to love Basjoe, but if you're not smoking it's not the most exciting or interesting place to hang out.

Since we will be there 9 days and I hope to spend a lot of time in coffeeshops, I need to find shops where she'll feel comfortable and won't mind spending time. What would you guys suggest as far as interesting, cool coffeeshops to hang out in, especially if you're not smoking, and are female? I don't care if the weed/hash isn't the best, I can bring my own.

my suggestion is yo-yo in de pijp area with the albert cuyp market

it is an art gallery as well and has high ceilings and is open so doesn't get too smokey

and the apple tart is one of amsterdam's best imo

Put Paradox on your list as well, great food/shakes/smokeables, local coffeeshop that makes everyone feel welcome.

Enjoy.

I'd say someplace with outdoor seating, but seeing as you're coming in February, i'm not gonna recommend that :D

perhaps the 420 cafe, they have a nice big interior and some magazines in english to read. plus a TV where they play planet earth with subtitles... excellent

my non smoking mate really enjoys the Rokerij coffeeshops, especially the one in the center near the doors coffeeshop. he does actually go in there to have a coffee when on business.

i would be inclined to suggest that one too, it has a porch area out the front for people watching and the interior is really well done. very chilled, lovely mural and great atmosphere. and my favourite hot chocolate in Amsterdam

Another vote for YoYo, this is ideal for a non-smoker. I have literally seen old ladies having coffee there, that gives you some idea how welcoming the place is.

La Tertulia is also on the same vibe, light and airy, more like a friendly neighborhood cafe than a typical coffeeshop.

Paradox, Paradox, Paradox

One of the only coffeeshops in town that has a true.. 'cafe' atmosphere. You dont need to smoke to enjoy it in there. Great drinks, great food, nice cookies and cakes. Magazines, newspapers etc.

Importantly as well, they rock a great weed menu for you. Try to NY Cheesel or the Bio Green. Wonderful stuff.

I'll add another vote for La Tertulia although it would be best if you could get a seat outside.

I think that dePijp is a good area to head to with the Mrs. The market there is unbelievable, and I would happily leave my husband for HOURS and go wander around, shop, and take pictures if I weren't a total pothead glued to the interior of coffeeshops. You can always hang at Katsu or Media while she explores.

If your wife doesn't like Mellow Yellow, but you want to get some of their Gear, Noon has a much chiller more intimate vibe.

Other places with similar vibe to Amnesia:

Have you tried Greenhouse Lounge yet? Lots of fun stuff to look at, table service, and a generally classier environment than some shops.

Also, Barneys Lounge near Rembrantsplein.

Have a great trip!

He said MY was dirty and imo The Noon is smellier/dirtier/smokier than MY and really not somewhere she'd feel comfortable.

Can't imagine what it would be like going with a non smoker. Obviously everyone makes their choices and that's cool because the city is so tolerant. I just can't imagine being as stoned as I get, with my mrs looking at me from across the table all sober and stern haha. I mean who would I laugh about the social and racial shortcomings of Mario World with?

I always go with a non-smoker (the wife) she just laughs at me when I say/see stupid things.

Interesting we disagree about noon. I realized that I've only ever been by there before noon (hehe). (When it is clean and bright.) I take it the scene changes a lot later in the day- I'd love to hear your impression of it.
