Show me a local who doesn't carry a bag around especially if you're on a bike.

I wore a CLEAN black baseball cap (with no logo) during our entire stay with no problems. I had Dutch people speaking their native tongue to me and then looking a bit perplexed when I was like, "Uh...what? Sorry, I'm a stupid 'merican." It helps when you're fair-skinned and blonde, though.
Just wear "normal" clothing. T-shirts with jeans/pants are fine. Stay away from big US brands/sports teams and you're all good. Oh, and mumble your English under your breath when talking with your friends and such. It's a little obvious when you're walking around shouting at each other with American bravado.
Oh, and bags are fine. My fiancé carried one of those little mini-backpacks that held everything with ease.
The most important thing to remember; just enjoy yourself.

Xactly!, with a caveat.
Nothing screams tourist louder than a portly middle-aged man with pale skin wearing white knee-high socks, Bermuda shorts, and a loud Hawaiian Luau shirt. '' ''
It's all about attitude.

Gotta love the people wearing their Amsterdam hats...Amsterdam raincoats...carrying their Amsterdam bags while wearing their Amsterdam tshirts (i've been guilty of the tshirt one, but no more...)...
We know the tourists in SF: they come to California in June/July/August thinking it's summer in California!!! Shorts, tank tops and flip flops! Then all the sweatshirt salespeople make BANK!! SO...all the tourists are walking around in shorts, flip flops and San Francisco sweatshirts! (of course with their cameras around their necks too...)

Try jeans, white long sleeve shirt, blue blazer over the top. Make sure you dont comb your hair for about 3 weeks and ride a bike everywhere you go with either a female passanger on the back or a big bunch of flowers.

Locals are more likely to go for a messenger style bag over a backpack.
