I too have gotten some surprised looks when I brought my glasses and plates back to the counter and emptying my ashtray in the garbage. Even more surprised was a local Amsterdammer who was sitting next to me one evening while at Coffeeshop Rusland. I asked him if the smoke billowing from my HUGE joint of White Russian was bothering him (the smoke was after all heading towards his face). After a good chuckle he said "I would rather be sitting in front of you where I can get the best contact!"

So perhaps it is good to be courteous, but not overly courteous.

Cisco and QueenMab are spot on with their analogy of going to a pub. Even though to the staff it would be surprising and even a bit confusing when someone cleans up after themselves, those of us who have worked in the service industry would indeed appreciate the hardships that the staff must endure, and a little help to make the night easier for them would be a breath of fresh air. For the Coffeeshop staff, these hardships are no different. Dealing with the general public while being on your feet all day has it's downside, and they certainly deserve your kind gestures.

Cisco also brings up the excellent and valid point of karma. I too believe that by simply being nice, patient and accepting it is possible to have a better trip. Small gestures to help those around you while on your travels will make your own experience all the more positive.

Nope. In a lot of places it's considered a bit infra dig to buy a drink and smoke your own weed without buying some of theirs, but frankly places like that can get to fuckery where I'm concerned. But buy and fly is perfectly fine anywhere.

I go along with the rules and have only been loud at one point in all my cs trips and that was in Barneys when the budtender at the time was very rude to one of my friends who couldnt get his passport out quickly enough and he very rudely told us to get out. It was his birthday and the guy killed the buzz of the group. Weird how something like that instantly sobers you up. Saying that I have been back since with no bother

Anyway, I get etiquette and rules but sometimes I feel very unwelcomed in Amsterdam. I think a few of the bud tenders are quite rude. I dont expect a personal welcome but I also dont want to be shot dirty looks or spoken to like a idiot. I think a lot of people jump to the defence when the bud tenders customer service comes into question but really there is no excuse and if you do shell out €2-3 for a 200ml drink then you shouldnt be made to feel like you are a bother to the tender. There are a couple of shops I avoid now as a result of bad service.

Some people are better at putting on a show than others, just like a bartender, isn't it? Tending a bar, I think, would be fun for a week, after that I would become increasingly annoyed at drunkenness.

However, if I were a budtender, I don't think I would grow annoyed, ever, at first thought. Give it some thought though, dealing with stoned people, day after day, week after week, might break even the most patient among us.

I guess the budtenders, the better ones at least, learn to prompt people to be quicker about making a decision when it's busy. If it's slow, let the customer take their time, if they want to review all of the selections, why not, it's a natural point to close the sale after reviewing the selections. If allowed to speculate a little more, imo, the better budtenders would have a flow to the questions they would ask to help narrow down the choices offered to the customer.

In the end, sales is about gaining the customer's confidence. Budtenders may think this does not matter, who cares if a customer is lost once and a while? The owners?

Do CS look at past sales and set a sales goals for the day like most every other retail outlet?
