Help me plan a day in Vondelpark

Hey there,

After visiting the Dam regularly over the past 20 years, I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I've never visited Vondelpark (outside of a moving vehicle of some kind). Part of that is due to the fact that I'm a native New Yorker, born and bred, so all things green and growing fill me with an abiding sense of dread and apprehension.

That's not entirely true, but the prospect of visiting another version of Central Park, has failed to inspire me to make the trek. That being said, I'm considering rectifying that omission on my upcoming trip in August.

For all you nature lovers, I would appreciate any tips about trails or activities to do in Vondelpark. That would include any nice spots to burn a few, reputable coffeshops in the vicinity, and good/cheap places to have lunch. Is it worth bringing a picnic? I'm guessing bicycles are par for the course. Extra points to those willing to specify an itinerary.

Do they have musical performances in the open? Can anyone point me to a good website for the same?

Lazy stoner that I am, I may still opt out, but I'm sure that someone will find the information useful. Thanks!

Bike is key, as it is a long sort of crescent shape.
TBH i was a bit disapointed with Vondel, do not get me wrong it is beautiful, and it is fantastic to get into some grass and trees as Amsterdam is strangely lacking in the green spaces, but it is NO STANLEY PARK that is for sure.
Anyone want to see a proper park, come out to Vancouver.

I love the Vondelpark when the weather is good, perfect place for chilling out and watching the world go by. I cant help you on what to do there mind as all i do is find a quiet spot around one of the lakes and sit my arse down and blaze away:D

It is popular there when the sun is out with lots of kids and families, so i make sure it is out of the way and not close to any paths where people pass so as not to cause any offence with my smoking.

I just go to relax so havent taken notice really of what else is there to do, sorry i cant help more

I highly recommend the Rembrandt Park...lots of nature and not so crowded.

I'm with Iko, having witnessed Stanley Park in both Winter and Summer, it is truly stunning!! As for Amsterdam I stayed in Van Eeghenstraat just beside Vondel in May and I always found it pretty busy, with joggers, yogis, BIKES and families. I do hear (and as Marco has stated) that Rembrandt is also very nice and not so busy. Of course, I should say that Vondel is also very pretty, I enjoyed my daily strolls through it

If it's a nice sunny day, it's great for a picnic. There's plenty of Dutch beauties stripping down to their underwear and sunbathing normally So well worth a visit haha

Pick up some chicken, bread, salad and something to drink at the top of the Kinkerstraat on the left. Over the bridge and round the corner to the Boerenjongens. Then down the street, over the bridge and into the top of Vondel park. If you want it chilled stay in the top half of the park, for a bit busier go towards the Stadhouderskade end, near the statue. Food and drinks in the park are what you'd expect, standard and a tad pricey. There is live muzik on sometimes, no idea of any agenda, the buskers aren't bad though. Keep yer stuff close if yer snoozin and the "Biertje" people normally have cold cheapish beer. (They walk round sayin Biertje, they aint mad ..they're selling it.) Rembrandts park is good if ya want more seclusion, plus there's a little farm zoo thing at the back.

I would go on a weekday and go to the market on Kinkerstrat before. This market is everyday, you can get a nice picnic there.

More in the middle. But that whole area is very worth a look around.

Daily market in Amsterdam Oud-West where you can buy fabrics, flowers, foods and clothing. At the Ten Katestraat in Amsterdam's Oud-West district you can find the bustling Ten Katemarkt. It is a bit hidden in a shopping street (Kinkerstraat). The market is not that big. It has around 130 stalls selling various fabrics, foods households, flowers, and clothing.
