If your budget can stretch to it get a room with a balcony at the Krasnapolsky.

Clicky.

The Balcony is nice but not essential.
The Krasnapolsky has designated smoking rooms.

I've been staying there for years, but on my last few visits I've stayed at the Krasnapolsky Apartments, usually around the same price as a regular room, but you get a bedroom, a seperate living room, fully equipped kitchen.
As the apartments are behind the main hotel building, no one will ever know if your smoking or not.

I've smoked in every room I ever had there, including rooms that weren't designated smoking rooms, and never had a problem. The corridors at the Kras often smell like any coffee shop, so I'm not the only who smokes there.

This should provide you with all the info that you need.

The entrance to the apartments is on Oudezijds Voorburgwal, just behind the hotel. It's a fantastic location IMO.

BTW, if you try to enter dates for your stay of less than 7 nights, you will be told that nothing is available, but if you contact the apartment coordinator (Ester), she will probably be able to help you.

The NH Carlton has smoking rooms , possibly the entire third floor.
It is dead center overlooking the flower market.
I really loved this hotel last year, nice clean rooms ( small ) and fantastic location.

There are several companies that do holiday rentals in Amsterdam here are a few links.

looking for around september
Try to avoid going the 9 - 14. There is a large convention in town and rooms will be at a premium.

my friends stayed at Hotel De Roode Leeuw is ideally positioned right on dam square, great as much as you can eat breakfast, but no eating of anything in your room or a 100euro fine (WTF)and where pretty strict about smoking in rooms but they still did with no trouble (there not big smokers).
