While I could get the hang of a rollmate I figure my best bet is the pre-made empty cones...I assume those are only available at headshops and not at most c/s?
I'm the same way, been a bowler since I started smoking. I was going to recommend pre-made cones as well. I have only seen them available in a couple of shops although most of the head shops I've been to sell them.

1. Is the roach paper usually provided in the coffeeshop or u have to get/make ur own roach?
- Roach paper? Do you mean filter tips? If so, read #2. If not, then what is roach paper?
2. As far as i know rolling papers are always provided if im wrong please correct.
- As stated already and from my experience, most shops have papers and filters which they provide for free. Just ask if not offered. Always a good idea to carry a pack just in case.
3. Any suggestions on a novice - friendly coffeeshop where they can give me advice on rolling a join since i'm not sure i can roll a good one on my first attempt?
- Don't know of any shop that wouldn't give some free advice, but if you are looking to be taught, might be a different story. Many suggestions have been given, from buying pre-rolled joints (least desirable IMO) to using a rolling machine, to pre-made cones (most desirable IMO).
Thank you for your time and sorry if the questions are too "newbish".
- You're welcome, and don't worry about the newby BS. We all started out as newbies, and it's nice to be able to pay forward and share what has been learned.
Lastly, be wary of the "kid in the candy store" phenomena. Too much of a good thing can lead one to experience what is warmly referred to as a "whitey". Trust me, you don't want to have a "whitey" in public, totally embarrassing. What is a "whitey" you ask? According to the Urban Dictionary, a "whitey" is an undesirable reaction to smoking cannabis common amongst lightweights and first-time tokers. Symptoms include dizzyness, clammy skin, nausea and vomiting. It gets its name from the paleness of the sufferer as the blood drains out the capillaries under the skin due to a decrease in blood pressure.
As stated, common amongst first-time smokers, although I think anyone can experience a whitey given the proper circumstances.
Have a great time in Amsterdam.
