CALIFORNIA’S CANNABIS CULTURE
19 July 2010
In November 2010, Californians will be voting on whether or not to legalize marijuana for recreational use. If passed, California will become the first US state to end marijuana prohibition.
This is an exploration of California’s cannabis culture. It’s the story of the people fighting for it, the people fighting against it, the people selling it, the people making it less taboo, and the people who were around when the whole scene started.
Amanda van West made this documentary for my final MA International Broadcast Journalism dissertation project at the University of Westminster.
Everything was filmed around northern California from May-June 2010.

I don´t understand this one 100%. Masses already get shit weed in form of soap bar and whatever the mob decides to sell them. I just see this a good development that now the masses atleast can get purish shit weed from legal places. Should be good for not being offered amphetamine every time you shop for weed (happens a lot in finland). And that shit is fucked up. Makes people less likely to try hard drugs.
Imo quality matters are secondary, cause if weed gets legalized in any way, the ones who want better quality will have easie time to grow it and those who want to smoke every other friday a J or two can get it easily without being muxed up in organized crime. So that ranting about shit weed and why it shouldnt happen is kinda silly.

tell me USBL, how are you involved in the busines? because I cant see no other reason than money for this opinion of yours. how can you say "let it be illegal because of the quality" when there are thousands of people everyday losing their driver-license, their job or whatever, just because they use cannabis....I cant believe you made this 180° turn

I've been sold weed that was wet, still cold from the freezer, and it smelled exactly like old lawn clippings. I have NO idea whatsoever about the grow conditions, hygene, additives, flushing etc. I hardly dare to think about it. Worst part was, it was damn expensive. I accepted it because I had no other source at the time, and had been already searching high and low for weeks upon weeks. It did get me high, but damn....
Please tell me how mass produced weed could be any worse than that?
Not calling you out, just continuing the discussion....

This is the second thread on this subject. Same arguments.
USBL, what do you mean by "yawn...shit weed for the masses....welcome to the machine"?
Thanks.
edit... you posted a reply to someone which answers my question, sort of.
What makes you think that this time around the capitalists won't get it right?

as a "activist", I would say any other situation is better than prohibition. Does it matter if government sells you shit, if it's legal. Grow your own without having so much to worry and fear about.
As for myself, I have a kid and would never smoke in Finland, the price for getting caught would be just too damn much. That's why I would welcome legalization or de criminalization in any form.

I totally understand both sides' point. Yes, legalization is better than what we have now, but I'd hate to see it go the way of tobacco and distilled alcohol (legal to grow and sell, but only by huge corporations that pay massive bribes to the government for the right.) You can't grow your own tobacco or distill your own whisky, and the penalties are worse than even federal cannabis possession penalties if you get busted.
I see the slippery slope of over-corporatization that USBL is talking about.

Nice one SS67, you said it best.
I have always hoped that some day I would be able to legally grow my own weed. I used to speculate on how the legalization would come about, but I never thought that MMJ would be the catalyst. Let's hope for the best and plan for the worst.
Now that California is on the cusp of legalizing cannabis, observe the real estate market, specifically land suitable for agricultural purposes. Once the measure passes into law, watch the madness kick into overdrive. Anyone who has the financial resources to make a capital investment in real estate could see an ungodly return on initial investment, if they act now. Anyone have a few million they are willing to gamble, er, loan me, for a reasonable return on investment of course?

I didn't know it was illegal to grow your own Tobacco. Really?

In the US, it isn't illegal. If one wants to grow tobacco for commercial purposes, there is a process. Because there is a process, some confuse it with being illegal, which it's not.
The following has been taken from
http://www.ttb.gov/tobacco/faq_answers.shtml
(Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, US Dept. of Tressury)
"T16: If I grow tobacco, do I need a license or permit from the TTB?
'TTB does not license, or require a permit for growing tobacco. In addition, TTB does not regulate the sale of tobaccos that are not tobacco products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture may regulate the growing and sale of such tobacco. You may find additional information from the U.S. Farm Service Agency.'
Note: Concerning tobacco, the USDA FSA is mainly concerned with land use, chemicals, and the such, primarily intended for commercial purposes.
The final word on growing tobacco for personal use - plant the seed and enjoy. For commercial purposes, as with any product intended for sale, one must go through the bureaucracy, read tax forms.
Just too easy.
