Driving in one day

Post by bubblebelly »

My friends and I wanted to spend one day driving around the netherlands, but have no idea what to do. I have been to A'dam 8 times in the past, but never outside the city. My buddy heard that Haarlem is a good place to go. I'd really like to take in some quaint villages and some windmills. Even a walk in some woods might be nice. Anyone have any recommendations for me?

Haarlem is indeed a nice quick get away from the hustle and bustle of the capitol. Alkmaar is also on my cities to visit list.

Peace,
Balou

when i want to get out of town and have a walk, i head westwards towards the sea and tramp around Zuid Kennemerland Nationaal Park

dutch: http://www.npzk.nl/
english: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuid-Kenne ... ional_Park

and if you want a super-cool and fun way to travel there you can take the Fast Flying Ferry ... here's a video

there is an old thread entitled Hydrofoil(Fastferry) to Centraal via DFDS port? which you might like to look at for more information

the other alternative is Amsterdamse Bos a big forest with grasslands and lakes and hills and it is only a quick bus ride away from the center of town

dutch: http://www.amsterdamsebos.nl/
english: http://www.amsterdamsebos.nl/algemene_o ... popup=true

both of these places feel like a day out in the countryside ... just roll up a few smokes and take some food and drink and you'll have a great time imo

Take the train to Haarlem. Nice little city, from there by train to Zandvoort and through the dunes back to Haarlem ( remember: from Zandvoort to Haarlem is a looooong walk). I ve done this by bike and foot.
Wat is er aan de hand?!

Thanks guys, all these suggestions are great. Sounds like Haarlem is the place to go. Alkmaar looks interesting as well, and both Zuid Kennemerland Nationaal Park and Amsterdamse Bos sound perfect! Any other recommended cities/villages? The older the better as we are really interested in the historical aspects of the Netherlands as well.
