Amsterdam hotels forced to cut prices

Amsterdam hotels forced to cut prices
27/07/2010

Amsterdam’s hotels have become considerably cheaper, probably as a result of the economic crisis. Hotel prices in the Dutch capital and around Amsterdam Schiphol airport fell by an average of 13 percent in 2009.

Research by accountants KPMG, published in Amsterdam's newspaper show prices for hotels in the rest of the country also fell, but less dramatically than in the capital.

The only section of the Dutch hotel trade to do well was the three-star sector. Businesses are said to have economised because of the downturn, insisting that employees travelling on company business take three-star rooms only rather than more expensive accommodation.

Last season, over eight percent of Amsterdam’s hotel guests came from Asia. Most came from China. The number of visitors from the United States fell by about one-third to around 11 percent. A further 25 percent of hotel guests came from other parts of the Netherlands. In 2008, Dutch out-of-towners accounted for a mere 14 percent of the capital’s visitors.

The decrease was probably caused by high-end hotels cutting their prices to offset losses due to a decrease in business travel. As for the opposite end of the spectrum (Hostel, 0-2 Stars), I haven't noticed any (significant) decrease in prices.

No surprise the three-star sector is doing well, as the article noted. This is typically the level where certain (inclusive) amenities are offered which are desired by business travelers - breakfast, on-site restaurant, in room coffee/tea service, mini bar, fitness equipment, WIFI, business center, etc...

Mini rant: The higher-end sector is taking a hit, wonder who is covering the losses? One of the first lessons I learned as a Business Major in college is that whenever possible, make someone else pay (use their money). It's all about the bottom line.

Priceline put me in the Krasnapolsky for 70 bucks a night (USD, not Euro)last september. We were in one of the newer rooms. Very nice for the money.
