I love riding around having a the odd toke. Floating along side a canal on sunny day with a nice hash doobie is sublime.

Renting a little boat to pilot yourself around and having a floating smoke fest is right up there too.

Having a quiet smoke whilst walking along a deserted sidestreet or sitting on a bench on Reguliersgracht minding your own business having a discrete puff is fine. Bowling down Kalverstraat on a Saturday afternoon waving a huge cone about, isn't.
I don't think the locals really care that you're smoking, they will just think you're a bit of a prat. After all, smoking cannabis is just something else to do to them and is considered a perfectly normal pastime and it has been for many years. The 'drinking a can of beer in public' analogy is the best analogy that can be used. I think some tourists, the immature ones, show off a little bit by smoking publicly because they are doing something that is illegal back home.

Yeah mon, I saw a sign on a little boat on recht Boomsloot and off I went, made it over to the Jordaan, cruised up the skinny Oudezidjds achterburgwal etc etc.

Waved at the cop boat whenever I passed them by. Has to be the funnest thing I've done.

If you've steered a boat with an outboard before it was pretty straightforward. Sure there were some hairy spots like the bottom of Achterburgwal in that canal that goes over to the single and I was a little apprehensive about going up through the top of achterburgwal into the harbour to get over to the single tunnel to get to the jordaan. Good times.

What's the friggin speed limit on the canals, in a boat?

I was once walking along Oz achterburgwal and one boat was chasing another, not canal barges but full on speed boats. They both caused such a huge ripple in their wake, the water spew onto the pavements causing pedestrians to dodge it all. Crazy scene, straight out of a Bond movie, no joke.

I've heard it's 15 km but I've seen the odd boat flying down the canal at midnight.

Cheers, I was wondering.
Wish I caught that boat chase on video. It was a full on chase, big style at the time.
