Welcome macca. La Tertulia may be one to try I think it's run by females ...more importantly tell her to take the space cakes SLOW especially if she is light made up (if you get what I mean). Also coffeeshops should not be rammed all the time, may be best to go earlier rather than l8r

I found Betty Boop & Crush to be 2 quiet places for a chill , can't comment on the spacecakes sorry .
Also if your out west i'd give Loft a go , nice & quiet & if you don't like it Erasmus Park is just round the corner

have fun wherever you end up

Wow, that's a bit shit. I'm not familiar with the hotel, some may say if the window opens toke on...I will leave that option for you to decide! I doubt you would be able to get an apartment for 2 days at this time of year (I think that's how long your going for). In terms of when it gets busy, I find mornings not too bad, or early afternoon, but then again after 9 or 10 at night depending on where you go also might be grand, it really depends on the area, the size of the coffeeshop and it's reputation

I've never felt too rammed so I wouldn't stress too much

welcome to the forum
as first timers you may not be aware of the dangers of the fast and crazy bicycle traffic, so could i recommend strongly that you both read the document
How Not to Get Hit with a Bike by S.G. Collins and found in his
website which
FlyByNite suggests for first time visitors to amsterdam

may i suggest that you stop by
basjoe to pick up a piece of their very nice and gentle spacecake and then head over to de pijp area to
yo-yo, a very peaceful coffeeshop/art gallery with outdoor organic weed
when the munchies hit, yo-yo have a really tasty apple tart too
enjoy your trip ...

i know the hotel you are in....being where it is, its well positioned and you have the whole city in front of you to enjoy as you want.
for a nice quiet place hmmmmmmmmmm if the weathers nice, the outside of 'coffeeshop tweedy' near vondelpark is pleasant. nice quiet road of stunning expensive houses and a pretty church.

well, its a big chain hotel, so it should have smoking rooms, in which case, you'd most likely get away with it. i havn't stayed there, i just know where it is.
to be honest... coffeeshops, are such a great thing, why not just stay out and smoke.... no point being in your room for any longer than you need to.
i know id much rather drink in a bar than in my hotel room, same logic applies.
have fun!
