Depends on the lifestyle you are accustomed to..For me Amsterdam is actually cheaper than one of the most expensive cities in the US..

Well you picked two nice areas, so for the apartment I would say furnished 1000 if you have some experience here but up to 1,500 per month if you use a makelaar. This may include basic cable, a phone and internet.

Not sure of mobile phone pricing since I don't pay my bill but the market is pretty competitive.

I think food prices are relatively cheap here, but the quality is only so-so if you shop only at the big chains. You can getter better produce (for example) at your local turkish shop.

Bike, decent used with 2 locks, 200e, new one 500e+

Basic health insurance is about 100-120e/month.

Having lived in some expensive cities, I do not find it that expensive here.

As my grandpa use to say I "Hit a big Lick" a few months back and got some extra dough and was thinking if I like it I may use that treaty deal and start some kinda small BS business and live there awhile.
Only thing is politically A-dam seems a little unstable right now... and with California on the verge of possible legalization in November.....seems to be a few choices for me..but none of this really matters till I spend a few weeks in September-October on Amsterdam to see if I even like it there (cant imagine that i wont though).

Nah, its fine here. They are not getting rid of coffeeshops...have no worries there. Politics is long-term and very slow here.

Amsterdam is waaay to expensive for rents like,I seen a 1 bedroom flat in eindhoven & it was only like 350 per month! thats more like it ,Breda may be good for prices as well .

I've seen low rates in those areas as well but, I was wondering if they are less tolerable down there when it comes to weed? I thought I read somewhere in the south they are less tolerable plus being closer to the borders where they're getting more strict? I'm not sure about that, what do you think?

I don't think the problem in Limburg Province (down there) is with weed as much as it is with the foreigners who come from Belgium, France, and Germany to score. There is a suggestion that instead of closing shops, which has been the case, they become Dutch only. Time will tell.

Dont think its got the same nightlife as amsterdam but its a dam sight cheaper ,Ive got a mate who gave up on amsterdam a few years ago & he just goes to haarlem now! the guest houses are only like 32 euro per night as well .
