Blind beggar - famous london gangster pub

Post by CHELSEA_SMOKERS_SOCIETY »

anyone been there?

im off to west ham away in a couple of weeks, and from previous years experience upton park/green street is a fucking dive, so we are gonna drink elsewhere before hand.

i found that the blind beggar in whitechapel is further along the same tube line, so we are considering going there, as its a famous old boozer, with links to the krays and other gangsters and loads of gruesome history dating back to jack the ripper etc.

thing is, its a famous name, but i have no idea if its been transformed into a souless wine bar or gastro pub? as seems to happen to often.

has anyone been?

Lived in Stepney for 12 years until last year CSS, Blind Beggar is ok for the outside drinking area but really at lunchtimes and weeknights is full of suits, a boring chain pub which it has been for years. They have even framed and encased the bullet hole where Reggie Kray shot someone, laughable.

As king solomon has said, jump out at Aldgate East, plenty of lively bars like Vibe, Big Chill, 1001 & 93 Feet East on Brick Lane, much better bet. If you do fancy Whitechapel the Urban bar next to the London Hospital is decent and the White Hart, adjacent to the Blind Beggar on the corner of Cambridge Heath Road is ok too.

I'll start by saying that I don't specifically know about the Blind Beggar.
Its been stated that its a crappy chain pub, this is backed up by a rating of just 5.5/10 at http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/64/648/

I can vouch for Brick Lane being a nice place to drink, with loads of cool bars, some nice pubs, and the ebst bagels this side of Tel Aviv.

live 10 mins from blind beggar and i can tell you the above comments are spot on. Beggars living of the krays tale. get yourself down bricklane. there no where else like it in london or england to think bout it. The bars mentioned above are good if i remember correctly 93 feet east has a ska night on thursdays which was good. after all the drinking get ur arse down to that beigal (bagel) shop.

peace

thanks for the responses guys. :D

all ready know and love bricklane. cafe 1001 was an old favourite pre rave bar of ours.

gotta say though brick lane isnt a pre football day place imo. a good day/night out yes, but im after a traditional london boozer to get in the mood.

The salt beef bagel (with a load of mustard on) is the best thing on the menu mate, brings a tear to my eye seeing that picture! Their smoked salmon, smoked salmon & cream cheese, pickled herring to name but a few aint bad either, and pretty cheap too. No doubt Mariah got told in there, the women who run the place take no shit, I have seen many a pissed up customer get lairy with them only to get turfed out.

That does look fucking tasty and I'm not really a mustard fan but I'd certainly try it.

Just back from salting half a cow :D .

Back on topic, CSS I know what you mean mate, Brick Lane is not the place for a pre-match vibe at all. En route to West Ham you could always jump out at Bow Road, the Bow Bells and the Little Driver are both nearby and nice boozers.

Try it with a bit less mustard.and eat a few bits of the salt beef before trying to eat it as a sandwich, as they ram it full of beef. They also do various others... smoked salmon and cream cheese springs to mind as being tasty too.

OIT,

less of that; not enough wine bars with olives instead of pork scratchings there for you West End boys?

Be a man, eat pie and mash and drink in a place where larger and lime counts as a cocktail!
