Blue Cheese first grow

Post by bigs »

High all

A 'friend' is planning, and has just order all equitment for his first grow. Any thoughts/ideas/problems/suggestions would be very very well recieved.

So the kit -

Drs 1.2 x 1.2 tent
600w grolux lamp (full kit)
12 pots
canna soil and nutrients
100mm fan and filter
Temp/Humidity reader
Plug and Grow Timer/Contactor
To follow : 12 x blue cheese cuttings

So has 'my friend' forgot anything? I've heard blue cheese is sensitive to nutes... so go easy? What do you think of a realistic yield? Anything from 20oz upwards would be a result. Total time from cutting to finish? was thinking a 4 week veg, 9 week flower, 2 week dry - 15 weeks total?

Also - and this is the killer - the grow tent will be in the bedroom he sleeps. Earplugs needed? Do you think a fan controller would be needed to reduce noise overnight - was thinking of having the dark side of the cycle at night, which would reduce fan speed and noise?

Thanks so much for your help in advance?
Would anyone like to see a grow diary?

I would suggest your "friend" runs his light through the night (coolest time) as "his" tent will prob get very hot with a 600w and only a small fan and filter.

Edit..."he" could run the tent without plants just to see what his heat build up will be like (after the lights been on for 12-18hrs)..

Thanks Midzy. Do you think the noise would be bearable to sleep in at that time? The room itself has windows so if the lights were on in the day do you still think this would be a problem? cheers

Well your extractor fan will be running 24-7 anyway so I would try to sound proof the growroom. I had to when I used to be a grower as I found that I could hear alsorts of strange noises in my living room (below the main G-room). I did not want any awkard questions from guests.

Well Bigs imo your "friend" would be best to do a dry run then "he" could sort any noise/heat problems now! before stating the plants. Its better to know now instead of later

Definate purchase if your worried about the noise.

You could also get a fan control speed unit, to slow the fans motor down this will cut the fans noise down during the mid-of-night.They are a little exspensive, but i found a similar type thing in b+q once, and it did the job.

thanks. will do a dry run with a fan controller and see what noise levels are like. So you think a 100m extraction fan + filter will be enough for a 600w setup?

4inch intake fan + small oscillating fan to circulate air flow.

yeah don't use a bathroom fan like i did my first time!!

The proper extraction fans are noisy and it used to wake me and the missis up in the morning when the timer came on even the buzzing from the hps was noisy.

You can get a switch to slow the motor down giving out less noise. But its gonna get hot in there so you may need to run it full speed to shift the stale air out.

If heat is a problem dry ice can help you or a cheap air conditoner would be even better.

I have most my journals from when i grew. can post the link for you f ur interested in seeing my grows and problems i had!!

Also i'd recomend testing the p.h of your water as it does help doing it properly and making sure you got the right balance 7.0 i believe.

Great and dont forget to post what you find ie. you max temp and how it all sounds :D

I can't say if a 100mm fan will be enough for a 600w setup but I am sure you will find out from your dry run, we have passed the hotest part of the year so you may be ok untill next summer and by then you could upgrade to a bigger fan and filter :D

A friend sleeps in the same room as him. Think its the same size tent, he sleeps with the fans on with no problem. But he does smoke alot of the herb....

I remember when I had a timer in my room, the sound it made sounded like Drum and Bass/Rock music from a distance. Confused the hell out of me for about a week!

Have heard of accoustic ducting, maybe that will help you if its in the same room.

I always pH between 6-6.2.......... Works for me, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

I found my Blue Cheese (Big Buddha) to be quite nute sensitive but that doesn't mean your friends ;) will, a lot of growing and growing tips are great but you'll find some of its trial & error and some is luck but the old kiss (keep it simple stupid) is the best advice anyone can give.

I also went down the bathroom fan route and found my proper extractor fan was actually quieter.

Right, thanks so much for everyone thats commented, really helpful.

Right, so 'my friend' (how long dya think until i slip up?) has decided to invest a bit more on better quality gear, which he thinks will pay off in the long term.

So hes spending £650 (including cuttings), and getting a

dr (not drs) 1.2 tent,
600w grolux light w/Lumatek Digital Ballast (which is apparently worth the extra)
5" extraction and filter
a timer, contactor, and a fan controller.
canna soil x 2, vega, flores, pk 13/14, flush
10 x atari wilma pots
clip on fan
10 blue cheese cuts...

Good deal? Ebay...(well except the cuttings!)

So what do you guys reccomend the best times to switch on/off the lights - on both 18/6 and 12/12 ?

Cheers, once again thanks for all your help its made things a lot easier for..erm.. my friend.
