Winter in Amsterdam

Hello Everyone.

This December will be my first ever trip to Amsterdam, and the first time I am leaving Japan since I left home (U.S) a few years back.

I've been doing some research, but I'd like to take this opportunity to pick the brains of some of you seasoned Pros.

I will be staying from Dec. 23rd through Dec. 31, in the Leidsplein area. Know of any good events?

After a grueling 11 hour flight from Tokyo, I should arrive in Amsterdam around 7pm on the 23rd. I find it quite difficult to sleep on planes, and by the time I arrive it should feel like 2am, so I'm hoping it won't be too difficult to adjust to the time difference. Any Jet Lag tips?

I studied Rembrandt in college, and I'm a history buff, so I really want to see as much of the Netherlands as possible. It's my plan to take in the sites during the day hours, and then maybe picking up a little something to help me relax and unwind in the evening.

Can anyone suggest some good places for me to go and have some coffee?
I was thinking Tertulia, Yo Yo, and/or Grey Area. Also, I've never tried Space Cake or hash, so I'm very excited about trying that out. I know a little about different varieties, but not much. Any tips or suggestions?

Drop your bags at the hotel and hit up a coffee shop, best jet lag remedy that I know of

A little about me; I love people, history and culture. My favorite genre of music is classic rock. I can speak both Japanese and English, no Dutch unfortunately. I'm a bit of a techie, and I used to dabble in some acting/modeling. I'm just a laid back kind of gal.

basjoe has one of the best cups of coffee in amsterdam imho

all very nice places, grey area is small and can get very crowded, the other two places are run by women and have a nice atmosphere, yo-yo has one of the best apple desserts in amsterdam imho ... watch the opening hours of la tertulia and yo-yo, they shut early in the evening

I have what may be a really dumb question, but what the heck here goes. How much distance can you get out of a gram?

I used to toke a few times a week, about four years ago, and at that time I never paid any attention to weights, I just packed a bowl and just went.

I've also always been one of those people who pretty much smoked only indoors. I never felt like I'd be 'on the ball' enough to go out while stoned. So I'll probably keep my smoking towards the evening. I can't imagine being baked and walking around at a museum; could be bad.

I have about six shops on my "want to go to" list. I'd like to try as much as I can, but I know I probably couldn't spend the entire time blazed, I'd probably never make it out of my hotel room.

I think you may find Amsterdam to your liking, although the weather may be a bit taxing during your stay, wet/cold and all that.

Any Jet Lag tips?

My advice is to buy a gram or two of nice Indica, go back to your hotel room, smoke some while taking a warm bath, all the while drinking 1/2L to 1L of cool not cold water, and then go to bed. Since your body clock will feel like 2am-ish, you should fall asleep fairly quickly, all things considered. If you find yourself having a problem falling asleep, smoke more Indica.

These shops are decent enough although you may find the Grey Area a bit cramped. I'm sure someone will make room for a lady. They better...
You will read a variety of suggestions regarding which shops to visit and so on, but you did elude to a liking for classic rock, so this is a good start. Unfortunately I don't pay much attention to the house music, unless it bothers me, which is rare. Maybe some can chime in, also you can read some of the coffee shop reviews, first page and all that.

Music genre aside, some of the better know establishments that offer excellent service and quality gear at somewhat reasonable prices are:

Tweede Kamer (nice, rustic atmosphere especially in the Winter, go experience it for yourself)

It's located on Ferdinand Bolstraat 10, across the street and one block from the Heineken Experience on the way towards the Albert Cuypstraat. Look for the Rainbow flag. The best coffee and dessert I have had in all of Amsterdam.

Some live in or around Amsterdam, and some of us live next door (Germany) or close by (UK, etc...) and frequent Amsterdam often.

Possible T&T's in the future.

A bowl for me is around 0.2-0.4g. Guessing by what you said, you probably have a lower tolerance. So one gram might last you the entire night. Maybe play it safe and buy two grams a night. Atleast that way you will have something left to smoke in the morning. To me, nothing beats a wake and bake in the Vondelpark. Maybe bring some stuff to clear up your red eyes, to ease your paranoia of being stoned in public.
Just remember, you can smoke as much or as little as you want.

Thanks for all the great info. I will definitely have to check out that cake shop, and I love your suggestion for dealing with Jet Lag. I couldn't think of a better way either.

If there are any TNT's from the 24th thru the 30th, I would definitely be interested. I haven't even made it there, and I'm already thinking that seven full days might not be enough.

The Dutch Royal Orchestra also has performance while I'm in town, so I think I'll have to try and do that as well. I think this is going to be a great first trip.

Yeah, it's been at least three years since my last toke, so my tolerance is about zero. I've read about so many different strains in HT magazine, so it's going to be interesting to actually try different strains out. I hope that while I am there, I can find a copy of HT in English. It would be nice to be able to read about CC 2010 while maybe sampling some of the winners. Oh, and I'll definitely be bringing the Visine. ha ha.
