House rules - no mobile phone usage

Post by tron »

I'm reading the house rules of Siberie out of curiosity, and noticed "no usage of cell phones"

http://www.coffeeshopsiberie.nl/eng/houserules.php

Is this common in Amsterdam? I use mine often, for Google Maps, checking email, etc.

yes, nearly every establishment in amsterdam has signs in the door saying not 2use phones inside, i asked in rockerij one time why & they pretended to use the phnoe talking really loud, its true they are unsociable &they should be banned IMO

Yeah huh. I won't be talking on it, still banned? I do think excessive talking on cell phones in public is annoying. But what about checking email, using internet on the phone, etc.

It's extremely common but nobody minds people using their phones for internet/texting etc.

It's when dickheads talk aloud on their phones that they get shown the door and rightly so.

"It is not allowed to spend more than 2,5 hours in our coffeeshop. The manager on duty may reduce that period to his or her insight. "

"Consumptions have to be paid for immediately; a consumption is compulsory; you are not allowed to bring your own. "

It's good to have rules but after reading the link I most definetly won't be going over there. Why post them on the website in such a rude / arrogant way?

Yes the wording is a bit harsh, but it also sounds like an English-as-a-2nd-language person wrote it, so I take it with a grain of salt. Still though, the idea was there. I'm thinking they had a lot of problems with young folks coming in, buying a drink, taking up a table all day, talking on their phones.

Got admit though - "consumption is compulsory" does not sound very gezellig.

Cool thanks. I heard good things, artsy, and good video reviews, wanted to check out. But also wanted to use my Android phone for Google Maps. I've got a long list of spots in Amsterdam marked on my map!

i can dig it. it makes sense in many/most situations imo. picture this:
your a local and you've been working 11 hrs. all you wanna do after work for awhile is go to a cs, enjoy a nice joint and maybe make some good convo. then some douche comes in who doesn't know the meaning of inside voices..starts blabbing about their day, taking pics on their mobile camera etc. last thing i'd want in that situation is to have something loud like that next to me. and it happens all the time to me. i don't care what you had for lunch or the person who looked at you the wrong way at work. and im sure alot of the people in the cs are the same way..hence the rule.

like i said im all down for a good conversation with a friend/stranger in these situations. but a person talking loudly on a mobile in a public place..esp a place like a cs is just very obnoxious.
