why isn't it legalised

I was reading Yahoo questions and found this question below, and it has made me think about it myself.

Technically marijuana is still ILLEGAL there but they still sell it in coffee shops for people to buy it.

Its not LEGAL, its just decriminalized and tolerated.

Why wont they ever legalize marijuana like alcohol and tobacco? Whats stopping them?

There are probably a million answers to this question but, I think one answer could be summed up by re-stating your last sentence;

"Why wont they ever legalize marijuana like alcohol and tobacco? Whats stopping them?"

Alcohol and Tobacco

If the goverment legalised marajuana, people would grow it wouldn't they? Then the goverment wouldn't be able to tax people on it, that is just one of many reasons mate.

But the seeds are available for the public to buy so that statement cant be to much of a reason in itself?. And is there not regulations that say people can grow 2, 3 or 5 plants before they can get arrested?. Pretty sure that plants can be grown for personal use in Holland as I recall reading a couple of years ago.

Also is it true that seeds can be bought in the UK, but just illigal to cultivate and grow?.

Yep 5 plants for personal use, cannabis seeds are allowed in the UK as souvenir or to be stored in case the laws change (I believe the latter is the same with mushroom spores as well).

Exactly, the governemts could quite easily license the growers, they could change the tax laws on growing equipment/seeds and clones so theirs lots of ways for them to make money, thats without even going down the coffeeshop route.

I believe it has more to do with treaties that were forced on the smaller nations of NATO by the US government at the end of WW2. That is why, in my opinion, the former soviet blocked nations will legalize sooner, look at the movement in Prague.

I hope you`re right, as long as any country legalizes, this will help us as welll.....but I dont think so, because there are so many industries interested in the illegality of cannabis :(

If they would legalize, they have to admit that their brainwash politic was completely wrong over the last 50 years.

But now they are looking at tax revenue from sales, an estimated 1.5 billion dollars for the state of Calf. if the referendum passes in Nov. Cash strapped governors in the US will be all over legalizing when Calf starts depositing those tax check in the general fund account

to be fair (in the UK), you can already legally make very small amounts of your own alcohol (home brew kits are easily availble in gadget shops), and tons of people make their own sloe gin and wine etc.

if alcohol was ILLEGAL or even only Decriminalised, then more people would make it at home...

thus in my opinion, if weed was legal, and readily available in shops, all cured and manicured for you, the amount of private home growing would go waaaaay down.... 99% of people would happily pay more from a shop (inc. tax) if it meant they didnt have to prepare it themsleves.
