Deventer: Un-discovered Gem of holland!(city date from 13th century) nice but just like Delft aint much to see but building good place to relax and red a book...
Kinderdijk: if you love Wildmill and walking well this is UNESCO site and WOW!
NOT a city But...Weerribben national parks: people here eked out of existence for centuries! and was told some of the oldest building in holland are found here!
Zandam: Wildmills (havent been but planning 2 go)

Muiden castle was nice but...if you bike from Amsterdam to Utrecht... trou abcoude/baamburgge once near breukelen youll start seing some other castles i think 6-7 of them!!

LadyJane wrote:Thanks guys for all the great responses. Plenty for me to think about for the next 10 weeks until I go! With so many great places to see, and so little time (7 days, 8 nights). I will definitely need to plan a second trip. :D

Or maybe a third and a fourth :?: :?: .....

Good call on Deventer, small and picturesque with a nice feel about it. Zwolle is also interesting.

A quicker trip out from Amsterdam is Leiden, full of students though

Don't think it's a city but I love Leiden.
A bit like Amsterdam without as many tourists

One off the beaten path places that I found was the Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn. The gardens behind the palace are some of the best I have ever seen.
