Ok, I take it back... I've NEVER seen the word spelled that way.
To most people, spelt is a kind of wheat.
Those comments are telling, in a geographical way.
I am guessing that you are originally from the US. (Or that you learned American English as opposed to English)
Would I be correct?

I'm not from the US, but you're right that I didn't learn English from the original source (ie. England)
I'm Australian.
