Smoking Ban Overturned
Smoking Ban Overturned
Owners of small pubs in the Netherlands have welcomed the lifting of a smoking ban imposed on the hospitality industry in 2008. The partial scrapping of the measure was announced on Tuesday.
The incoming rightwing government is responding to persistent complaints from one-man businesses who argued that the smoking ban was meant to guarantee staff a smoke-free working environment. Since they had no employees, their small pubs didn't need the smoking ban, the owners claimed.
The ban will remain in force, however, for pubs, restaurants and the like which are run with personnel.
Secretary Wiel Maessen of the 1250 small pubs' umbrella group KHO said "I lit an extra cigarette when I heard the news." He added that despite his satisfaction on behalf of his members, the fight would not be over until the ban was lifted for the entire sector.

If the owner, and sole worker, wants to walk backwards, then thats entirely his choice.
I give this two thumbs up.
Yup, thats true.
To each there own.
I love that i can walk into most Airports, restraunts or bars and not reek of others cigarette smoke though.
Ever been to the airport in Costa Rica or Mexico City for example, ewwwwwwwww.
BTW atleast out here, they did study after study and bars and restraunts revenues went UP not down with the elimination of cigarette smoking.

Then why not let the free market decide. If everyone is gonna make more money, I can assure you that smoking would be banned voluntarily.

All that can be solved though through smoking rooms and better ventilation?
I think you are English, right? The nanny state is not so strong here and the smoking law was resisted by patrons and servers alike.
Whoa are you really trying to fucking insult me ? Im from EdinburghMarco wrote:n?cisco wrote:Marco wrote: But I bet you want to smoke weed in a coffeeshop?

Agree completely about at restaurants. However, is there no way that a compromise can be reached where smoking is allowed at some bars?

However, is there no way that a compromise can be reached where smoking is allowed at some bars?no probs dude ! it is indeed a sticky subject i think it shoud be up to the individual establishments wether they want to ban or not ? but you know thats too much like common sense
on the other hand the ban has made it easier to chat to women in the smoking areas outside
however im not that partial to females that smoke cigs
Kidding ladies.
Listen, its a complex issue. People who work at a bar should have the opportunity to find work in places that ban smoking. But in every country there are millions of people who want to go out to places without smoking, so they should exist. But there are also millions of patrons and servers who want to go to places that allow smoking. The problem with gov, bans is that they take away the freedom for a compromise.
I an quarter Scots by the way, so I will happily buy you a pint for calling you English.
