if this tourist ban does go ahead then im gonna be really gutted about it, i used to go to amsterdam twice a year up to 5 years back but met someone and had kids so didnt get chance to get back until last month for me and my wifes honeymoon, it was her first time and she fell in love with the place as much as i did and we have planned to go back every year for our anniversary it wont be the same if we cant go in CS and tbh we probably wouldnt go, how torturous would it be to walk past a CS and not be able to go in there.

heard at Cannabis College from very reliable sources today, that the new Dutch Right Wing Coalition government intends to proceed with closure of all coffeeshops for foreign tourists. The sale of Marijuana will be restricted to Dutch nationals and Dutch residents ONLY. This has been confirmed in the news this evening.

But surely they have to actually take government before anything can actually change, as far as i can tell there is another vote to take place on tuesday by the cda members and if they are successful then they form the government, even then surely they have to pass it through parliament before they can enforce it and there will def be opposition there i would of thought.

Someome i was talking to about this thinks the CS tourist ban and a few of the other plans is just a publicity gimick to make certain people happy and to push the coalition through and that they have no intentions of pushing them through. I dont know maybe he is right??? Maybe im just clutching at short straws in small hope that this wont happen???

I just found on the cannabis college website a set of rules that coffee shops have to follow in the netherlands.

"The coffeeshops are required to comply with a set of conditions known as the 'AHOJ-G' criteria: no advertising (A), no sales of hard drugs (H), no nuisance (O), no admission to coffee shops for minors (under 18) (J), and no sales of large quantities (more than 5 grams) per transaction (G). The maximum trading stock is 500 grams, but municipalities can set a lower maximum if they wish.

Depending on the specific problems they encounter regarding local Cannabis retailers, some municipalities have added a number of extra conditions to the AHOJ-G criteria in the form of a covenant ('no parking outside of coffeeshops', 'coffeeshops must close at 10.30 p.m.', etc.) Policy regarding each shop is left up to the local authorities and is discussed between the police, the public prosecutor and the mayor ('tripartite consultations')."


I suppose it could be left up to each city to decide themselves wether to allow tourists in CS or not

this WILL happen. for sure. if not now sometime soon. You have to realise that although dutch people have a reputation for tolerance that less people smoke weed in the netherlands than most other western countries. A great deal of dutch people are sick of drug tourists and particually loud crass groups of "lads" decending upon amsterdam and acting like complete idiots. If more people acted with a bit more respect it might help.
whilst the coffee shops do generate tax revenue amsterdam is able to attract a wide variety of other tourists (mainly "classier" and more wealthy) to its museums, cannals and exhabitions.
For those who argue they cant ban non dutch people from coffeeshops i have to disagree. Its not the same as for example banning welsh people from scottish bars as a fellow forumite has suggested. Bars are legal buisnesses and are held to trade and discrimination laws. Coffee shops are not legal buisnesses they are tolerated. big difference. their operation is based on tolerance not law. The authorities provided they can obtain support in parliment can do as they please. You have to remember that for decades the dutch have resisted international and european pressure to close the coffeeshops.
As to wether this collation will stand and be an effective government only time will tell. personally i am concerned that such a tolerant country has suddenly taken a step towards the far right, however this shows that there are social problems as the far right is very good at exploiting these for there own ends like in othe countries eg bnp in uk, austrian far right party in power, recent rusults in sweden etc.
also wether a membership scheme would be effective is also debatable. How would it be policed, how would the governent stop non dutch joining either over the net or in person. How would they ensure all coffeshops would follow the rules particually when the rules would effectively make the majority of shops unprofitable- for example barneys dampkring etc could survive this, many smaller less busy shops could not. It would seem to encourage the black market.
this being said its comming so enjoy the present status quo for the time it lasts. For those who argue not, this is like a replay of the build up to the mushroom ban. It happened.

I don't think so. First off, there is absolutely no way most of the coffeeshops could survive without foreign business. Second, you're not being fair to the numbers in parliament--half of the votes are leftist parties that support full legalization. Man, I've heard this scheme relayed back so many times, bills that were sponsored at least a dozen times, with CDA in control of the government. VVD, strictly speaking, isn't a "conservative" party against shops.

They will close the coffeeshops that are within 350 meters of any school which will probably close 100+ coffeeshops, the ones that only cater for the tourist market (mainly in the centrum) will also end up closing due to lack of business which will probably leave less than 100 shops in Amsterdam, more than enough for the locals that smoke.
