Truffles vs Mushrooms

Post by beq00000 »

Hi all,

I'll be in Amsterdam towards the end of this month, and I'd appreciate any comments that people may have about the truffles which are currently available, and how they compare in strength and effects character to mushrooms.

I am experienced with mushrooms, but the only truffles I've taken were Philosopher's Stones. Based on those experiences, that's probably not the kind of trip I'm looking for, I'm hoping for something a bit more visual and dreamlike. If mushrooms were still available, I'd probably be choose Thai or Hawaiian, if that helps. Any recommendations?

I keep hearing that mushrooms may still be available in some places, am I better off just looking for them, rather than trying truffles?

Thanks,
-BQ

Sorry if I was unclear - I'm not looking for any advice on where to buy mushrooms. Rather, I'm hoping that someone who has tried the varieties of truffles available can tell me if any of them are worth considering.

Thanks, though!

I tried 15g of the psilocybe atlantis sclerotia when I was in Amsterdam and I certainly found them potent, if not too much so. That might, however, have been because it was my first time and I was taking a non-beginner dosage. Probably doesn't answer your question very well though as I've never taken shrooms. I think most people on this forum are more weed orientated and not such shroom enthusiasts.

I'm into shrooms, although I haven't done truffles before, so I can't really give personal advice about that.

People tell me the truffles tend to be a little weaker than shrooms. But I've also been told that psilocybin is psilocybin, and the only difference is that truffles tend to have lower psilocybin levels than shrooms. So its not that truffles are a 'weaker' psychoactive as such. It just means you have to eat more truffles than you would shrooms, to get the same amount of psilocybin.

So if you've only got access to truffles, but you want a strong trip, you could think about taking one and a half doses of truffles. It goes without saying, but don't take my advice unless you know what you're doing, and do your own research about dosages.

Thanks for the responses.

I've done a fair bit of research into mushrooms over the years. In my 20s, I was fascinated with psychedelics, and did a lot of reading and experimenting.

My understanding of the pharmacology is that there are things that are still unclear about psilocybin and psilocin, and how they behave in the brain. Specifically, while it's true that psilocybin gets converted into psilocin in the body, it's also true that this conversion takes time. How this affects the subjective experience of a trip is, I think, still not well understood. If I'm wrong about this pleas tell me.

Regardless, it is undeniably true that some mushrooms are more digestible than others. Even when making tea, I've generally found some level of nausea and gas. Physical discomfort can affect set and setting, which is the most important factor in the subjective experience.

All I can say is that when I've taken mushrooms in places where they were legal, and hence had a choice of varieties, I've found that they were noticeably different. Not, perhaps, as different as a sativa from an indica, but not unlike, say, the differences between the various Hazes.

The several experiences I had with Sclerotia Tampanensis, in particular, were not particularly to my taste. Hence, the question :)

I haven't decided whether on not I want to trip on this trip, but if I decide to, I will certainly calculate my own dosage ;)

Thanks again,
-BQ

there are various groups of magic mushrooms, all from within the same group will give very similar effects. The main active ingredients are psilocin, Psilocybin (which it metabolised in stomach acids to psilcin) , baeocystin and also various alakaloids.

cubenis mushrooms (mexican, columbian, equadourian, thai) are the main group and give a typical mushroom trip. laughing, visuals (breathing walls, size misperception), altered perception and thought etc. as far as i am aware it is still possible to obtain these dry in the dam. however they loose their potency when dried and wont give the same trip as fresh wet mushrooms. this is due to psilocin breaking down when dried, psilocybin is more stable.

copelandia cyans (hawians) where the other main type of magic mushroom sold pre ban. they were significantly stronger than cubenisis type. They contain the highest alkaloid content of any known mushroom. they give a much stronger experience (not for beginners) and a journey into a another world. they do not loose potency to the same extent as cubenisis mushrooms, and they do seem also to be around if your lucky.

Psilocybe azurescens is the most potent- 1 mushroom enough for a strong trip. these have never been for sale in amsterdam or anywhere else as far as i know

sclerorita or truffels contain both psilocin and psilocybin but not contain such a wide range of alkaloids. they are not as potent as mushrooms gram for gram and do not produce the same effects. Atlantis truffels are thought to be the strongest available in amsterdam. i have tried those and also the two other available types. i have found all of them to be broadly similar to each other but distinctly differnt from magic mushrooms. less visual, less euphoric more a journey into your own mind and crazy thoughts in a kind of dreamy haze.

i found truffels to be enjoyable but not as enjoyable as shrooms. but i was always one to push it as far as i could with the hawians.

IF you really want to have a trip, then forget the truffles, the hash in Amsterdam is stronger imo.
Get the Peyote.
You can buy 5 year peyote buttons at a few of the smart shops.
They are expensive though, but money comes and goes, the memory will last a lifetime.

J-smoker is pretty spot on with his info.
I tried philosophers stones on my first trip to Amsterdam about 5 years ago, and they didn't have much affect on me. It was possibly due to the fact I'd had some fresh mushrooms (can't remember which strain) a few days earlier. I fell asleep, however they kept my boyfriend awake till about 6am.

Last year when I went back it was just after mushrooms got banned, and we tried 2 types of the Sirius "freshbox" brand truffles (still got the safety leaflets in my diary lol). We bought them from Elements of Nature. They didn't use conventional names but we had the "Golden Teacher" and "Cosmic Connections" a few days later. Golden Teacher was the better of the two. We took them at lunchtime and watched some shark documentaries getting really stoned, then found ourselves staring out the window at the mish-mash of rooftops from the 5th floor, and the clouds were all big and fluffy in a blue sky, with church spires protruding into them. The clouds seemed to swirl together, making patterns, and the buildings appeared to bend and warp in parallel motion.

The view was brilliant, but there weren't many visuals beyond that, inside the room or anything. I felt like I thought a lot about everything, if that makes sense :)

The second lot, we did in two halves for some reason, and the effect wasn't as strong, but there were some funny moments like laughing for 20mins because I dropped a spoon in the bin and I couldn't move to get it out because I was laughing so hard. :D

On our most recent trip, I did a bit more research beforehand, and read that "atlantis" are supposed to be the strongest of the three types, and any other names are just rebranding (like the type I did last time). We went to Conscious Dreams and got a box each, these were brilliant. I don't remember a lot about the early part, I think I felt a little unsettled as we hadn't eaten for ~5hrs beforehand and they were sitting heavy in my stomach.

Once they digested we watched something funny on TV and had a joint and I ate an orange and it was the juiciest orange ever (can't wait to get more!), and I made such a mess trying to eat it :D
Afterwards I remember laughing and lying back on the bed, and something set me off, I was just thinking it was SO COMFY. I told my boyfriend to come join me, because it was fucking hilarious, and he laid down and started laughing as well, we just laid down and laughed, proper tears of laughter, gasping for breath before you set off on another laughing fit, type of laughter.

And the more comfortable I got, the funnier I was finding everything. This went on for no less than 2 hours. We barely spoke.. haha... I could just about say "this is ridiculous" and that would set me off again :D

Fantastic experience, I'm hoping to enjoy something similar in less than two weeks time when I visit again. I think I'm there the same time as you, and we are planning to pick up some truffles on our first day, so I will try and let you know if we get a good batch somewhere :)

I've had truffles that the store said were the strongest they had. They made the walls bleed and the TV come alive.

I have tried mushrooms several times, both ones picked in the uk and bought in amsterdam and the uk before they were made illegal, but have only tried truffles once so im no expert.

In my experience, ive found mushrooms to be more visual, while truffles more euphoric, kind of like a mild e but found things funny rather than having a happy feeling if that makes any sense.

However after reading melb-dam-lover's post, maybe i bought the wrong truffles!!!
