Oh I see. Even in the UK they do not close down an entire block to carry out mass searches.

They can search you but I believe they need suspicion (although any reason can be made up so it's a moot point really). You can also ask for a note that explains why you've been searched and other details etc.

You can smoke pot freely almost anywhere in Vancouver, so yes i'd say very tolerant.
They closed down the two coffeeshops that dealt weed and hash in the late 90s but since then i have not noticed any significant changes.
Maybe i'm missing some news ?
Ill give a report on how things are soon, as ive got two weekends over there between now and Decembers The Wall show.

Wrong.

Na your wrong, stop and search was big here until the renowned gang from the area moved on. Once gone then normality returned and the cops moved on. The Gang in question was resposible for stabbings and some pretty well known NYE murders, they are now back in there small little area and thanks goes to the police. I would say that freedom has been given back to a whole comunity, the place i live!
If there is a problem in that area that needs sorting then they will stay until its gone. TBH you seem negative towards the Police and them doing there Job. If they was doing nothing you would be moaning that all these peeps running around and the cops do jack. We pay there wages BLAA BLAA BLAA!

How would you know how i feel towards police officers, i have NEVER given an opinion on them ?
As for civil liberties , just ask the USA citizens who gave Bush the right to do whatever the hell he wanted, including wiretaps without warrants.
Almost 10 years after 911 and Obama is letting them keep on.
Do not be fooled, your cops protecting your neighborhoods could do walk and talk the beat like the old days and crime would of gone down faster than pissing off decent law abbiding citizens.
I am honestly shocked some are so obtuse.

I think in europe nobody has to carry any weapons.
that's why europe is a save and easy going place!
look at the us cops, you see what happens when cops have to fear their lives each time they do a stop because you are allowed to carry weapons.
if you do the wrong move you'll be tasered

action and reaction that's simple!

we have more liberty when people stop carrying weapons, all security guys are more easy when they do not have to fear the opponent carrys a weapon.

in germany we have laws that do not allow you to carry a weapon the fines are hard! that's why people usually do not carry knifes and guns!
you are checked too, but when there is no prob with your id and if they will not have any other clear claim, they will do no search. id check is
common in the centers of citys or at stations. answer some questions and you'll be ok!

I agree with you Colina. Things are different in the US vs Europe and there is no going back. In the US guns are legal and widely available. Which is one reason I had a loaded handgun at my home if needed in the US. In Europe, I just do not feel threatened. Sure, there is a chance of me getting murdered or assaulted, but its much less compared to the US....which is why I feel the risk (legal and otherwise) of me owing a weapon is simply not worth it here.

Plus, as a grateful 'new member' of society here, I will not disrespect their laws and social morays.......

i know people who have cariers permits. just seems like a bad idea to me. esp with all the road rage. my friend jake(rest in peace) used to be a delivery man for a truck parts/rental company and he always left his pistol at home. people just get to emotional out there. had a friend from highschool who got shot 10+ times in a drive by...over a fucking girl. sometimes you have to protect violent/stupid people from themselves and if that means outlawing guns then im all for it. around 10 years ago my neighborhood was slightly sketchy at times so at night always carrier my kriss blade balisong. then i asked myself why i was carrying this. shit i didn't wanna go to prison. so just rely on the ole fists if need be.

Guns are idiotic.
So are carrying weapons, on that we can all aggree.
We talked with some neighborhood cops in Amsterdam walking around this past summer.
They were super chill, and told us they were each stationed in a specific neighborhood and handed out there cards to all the businesses, if they ever had issues they called there own neighborhood officer.
I thought that was such a fantastic and old world aproach.
Cops in cars cruising around sullenly does not help anyone.

"Cops in cars cruising around sullenly does not help anyone"

True that. Established police (community based, know the people) has disappeared, in my hood mainly because of police unions.

These kids now don't get out of their car unless they have to. Busting a drunk or a vagrant isn't very cool - esp when you have 2+ years of criminology classes to pay for, and your peers telling you 'you da man'.

Cops (in general) are the bullies from high school, the moral arbiters, and the ones who just want other people to DO WHAT THEY ARE TOLD.

I've met the odd good one, but at the bottom of it, they're just civil servants marking time until a fully indexed pension.

People need to look after themselves, and their community. Let the cops handle the scum with weapons and violence. That's what they are supposedly trained to do.
