Where not to go?
Like in any other big city, there are probably certain areas in Amsterdam where it could be dangerous for a tourist to go. Specially a distracted, stoned one.
So which areas should I avoid? Is the area around the Centrum safe?

A minority of one.

You know i was there in 2002 & i felt way out my depth,At the station the train seemed to take ages & they were like a couple of groups of youths hanging around staring at people + shouting things to each other! i was glad to get on the train in the end
Ha ha, bad advice, there are tons of dodgy areas within the A10.Boner wrote:Stick within the A10 (road) and you'll be fine.
There are areas you should not go in the New West (inside the A10) and the Bijlmer but there is no way you will stumble in on them stoned unless you take a 30 min metro or tram ride.
Obviously, do not go to somewhere with anyone you meet out in the RLD.
Even the worst places are not bad at all, compared to a proper 'hood.

vandaag is het begin van de rest van je leven
One year (when we first started using the trams) we got the pass that lets you travel all over Amsterdam so we thought it would be a good idea to just stop on whatever tram we got on and see where it took us, we came to the end of the line and just stopped on the tram when everyone else (including the driver) got off, we we're stuck on that tram for a good 10/15 mins before another driver walked past and let us off, we didn't have a fucking scooby doo where we were so we just hung about until we saw a tram with central station on it.

Funny thing is, first time I went to Bijlmer I was shocked. It was much safer there than most places I have lived in the UK. Amsterdam is such a safe city compared to almost any city in the UK IMO.
