Trips to the Dam October 2009 & February 2010

Post by CHT »

Hi everyone and thanks for reading, this is my first travelogue, I hope it's a decent read! I'm Lawrence, 22 originally from Ireland but now working and living in London trying to make inroads on the stand up comedy circuit. Obviously I'm a bit of a rookie compared to most people on the forum but have enjoyed green for a few years, although it would only really be a weekly session with a few friends. I worked in Spain for three summers and myself and two very good friends closed our bar on a Tuesday, so we could have CHT, Crack Head Tuesday, where basically we would go to a new destination each week and get pretty wrecked (one experience with brownies left me crying on top of a mountain and laughing for about an hour at a tree which looked like it had a vagina in the trunk).

It was our last season in Spain in 2009, and we all live in different parts of the UK so we arranged to have a Crack Head Tuesday in Amsterdam in October 2009 which would be our first time there for the three of us, apart from when I was a baby my mum and dad took me there and a school trip when I was 7, so obviously no coffeeshops were visited unfortunately!

A good friend of mine from Ireland who had been to amsterdam twice before also joined us along with his girlfriend, we all met at the airport and realised the train was down due to maintenance work at Schipol. This led to a pretty long bus journey to another train station, but we were all in good spirits. We hopped on the train and arrived at Central station, but for some reason my friend was certain this wasn't Central station so we stayed on the train. Which eventually started travelling again backwards towards the airport, not an excellent start haha, but eventually after another train journey we arrived again at central station and hopped off. The first warning I was given from my friend was watch out for bikes and trams, this was tough for a newbie and I was pretty worried about this as I was finding it hard cross the road when completely sober never mind wrecked. It was a short walk to our hostel, the meeting point which was a great location in the RLD, the staff were friendly and they had a smoking room in the bar area. Was really impressed with it seeing it was quite cheap as well.

We threw our bags in the 18 man room and ventured out into the greatest city in the world at around 6pm. Our first coffee shop was Route 66, which basically became our local and was a really nice venue that had just been recently refurbished I believed. Loads of big comfy sofas and a pretty cool, modern shop with a variety of music for everyones taste. Like a lot of Dam virgins I just couldn't really get over the fact I could just go up to the counter and order different strains of weed! My friend suggested we get white widow to start and orange bud, which in Route 66 everything is pre-bagged and 15euros. Two bags, a grinder, skins and 3 cups of tea sorted we sit down and begin rolling our first dam spliffs. My rolling skills at this stage were really quite poor, andy rolled a perfect fatty whilst mine resembled a wet cigar which had an impotence problem. After everyone laughed at me to my embarassment including a few random Italians, we lit up and got the party started. About an hour later and a number of joints we left route 66 and we all realised we were pretty fucked, so we did the only thing you can do and that's go to Baba's and get a brownie, and wonder around the RLD checking out the, erm, talent shall I say. At this stage we were tapping eachother shoulders and just generally trying to freak eachother out a little. I was just blown away by the city though, it really is a beautiful place. We made our way back toward the Hostel and stopped by at Hunter's coffee shop first, buying 2g of NYC Diesel and 1g of Chocolope. The NYC Diesel was probably my favourite smoke of the Dam, which we enjoyed across the street in Hunter's Vodka Bar along with a few Heinekens. At this point we were all pretty mashed and going to the bar to order another pitcher of beer seemed like a pretty daunting prospect. The bar lady there though was an absolute legend and rather quite hot too!

At around 11pm we went for another wander around the RLD, stopping to get pizza slices and waffles before ending up in a smoker friendly bar playing pool and having a few more beers, before deciding we would buy some mushrooms the next day and rent bikes, as we were heading home early on the third morning. Let's just say this decision will live with me until I die.

We got up early, grabbed breakfast in the hostel (which for 4euros was great, but not paticulary appetising as it was simply a hard boiled egg, a slice of cheese and a piece of bread) and had a nice wake and bake in the smoking room. We headed to route 66 again for another bag of White Widow and AK47, then to a smart shop where we bought three packets of their strongest truffles and a massive cone which we packed out with the rest of our weed. A quick walk to the bike hire shop to collect our bikes, we decided to cycle to the Vondelpark to enjoy the mushrooms there. Remembering the smartshop guy said not to smoke any weed beforehand and have an empty stomach, we lit up the massive cone and started munching down the mushrooms on a bench in the Vondelpark which was quite secluded from the rest of the park, thank the lord for that as within about 20minutes I went on a massive freak out. I had tried mushrooms before and had a really nice mellow trip, so I munched down a bit more than anyone else hoping for the same effect, this was a bad BAD call.

Basically the sky turned a shade of purple and stars started falling from the sky towards me, and I started talking gibberish quite loudly, freaking out that we were in Amsterdam and had bikes. "Why... why do we have bikes? Why are we in Amsterdam, oh god, we shouldn't be here man. WHY AM I IN AMSTERDAM! This is bad.. this is bad!" Luckily my Irish friends girlfriend didn't consume any mushrooms and tried to calm me down, whilst everyone else pissed themselves laughing at me. This continued for around ten minutes until finally I started to calm down a little and enjoy the trip... until an old lady in a wheelchair rolled past me which scared me to death for some reason, "AAAAHHHHHHHH!" "Lawrence mate calm down it's fine" "She smelt of death... why are we in amsterdam? WHY DO WE HAVE BIKES". Queue another half an hour of freaking out on the freak out bench, where everyone laughed at me again. Finally again, I calmed down thanks to an American tourist who was probably high, crashing her bike into the tree in front of us which had us all in hysterics for literally an hour, sorry to the American lady, but her and her friends laughed it off too.

We decided we were ok to cycle back after around 2 hours and began cycling through vondelpark to the mainroad. This is when we realised we were all still wrecked, it literally felt like I was in a movie and the bike was pedalling itself. We got to the mainroad, seen how busy it was and immediately bailed, cycling back to the freak out bench to try and calm down (and have another sly joint). It was at this point I was staring at a bracelet I was wearing, which has religous pictures on it, and it dawned on me. I was Jesus! It was up to me to lead my friends out of vondelpark and this was a test from god (I'm not actually religous at all, but thanks to good old mushrooms and weed I thought I was the new Jesus Christ). I cycled at the front and led us on the 20min cycle ride back to our hostel, how none of us died on that trip I have no idea and I want to apologise to any one who was on the roads that day.

We got back to the hostel, stocked up again at route 66 and headed to my favourite place in Amsterdam, the Green Light. It's a smoker friendly bar with lots of cool different decor, low tables where you sit on the floor on cushions around the table. The staff there were great, and laughed at me upon hearing about my mushroom trip, whilst filling up a lovely grape shisha with our bag of weed in it. We stayed there for literally hours, smoking the rest of the gear laughing about the day, drinking beers. This I'm sure will remain with me as one of the happiest moments of my life, I was alive, unfortunately I figured out I probably wasn't Jesus, but I was enjoying cold beers, great weed from a shisha and got to share it all with my best friends. Moments like that are definitely to be treasured.

We staggered back to the hostel, smoked the rest of our stash and hit the sack around 3am, awaking at 6am to get the train back to Schipol (luckily in the right direction this time). On the plane home, I was really sad and I knew I was hooked and had to go back to Dam as soon as possible, and this time check out more coffeeshops as I think we only visited maybe 6 different ones, the names of which I unfortunately can't remember from October, but I can remember the January places.

Upon arriving home I booked the trip on sky scanner for January 2010, the travelogue to follow. Lit up a joint and told my stories with my friends sitting around me, all wishing they'd have been there too.

TRAVELOGUE: JANUARY 2010

As I said before I booked my flight online as soon as I got home from the Dam, using skyscanner for a three day trip. At that point I lived in Newcastle as I was at uni there, but the cheapest flights were from Liverpool, so in my weed induced haze decided the best thing to do would be to save some money, and worry about how I would get to and from Liverpool in January! I convinced my Irish friend Andy to join me again, along with my two friends from Spain Vic and Joey, my girlfriend (who's a non-smoker) and my CHT party partner Johnny who is my main weed buddy in Newcastle, who can smoke all day and night but is well and truely wrecked after one joint most of the time, he just keeps going in zombie mode miraculously.

I was supposed to be studying hard for my January exams, but I couldn't stop surfing the internet checking out amsterdam videos on youtube, and googling coffee shop reviews, where I found this fantastic site. Reading everyone elses travelogues got me unbelievably excited, and I was literally counting the minutes until the 26th January when I would be returning to the greatest city in the world!

After completing my exams (no idea how I passed), we arranged how we would get to Liverpool airport the following day. Myself, my girlfriend and johnny would be travelling together, with andy flying from belfast, vic and joey from London. We decided to drive there, so the next day we awoke at 6am to be picked up by Jonny in his death trap shit heap of a car. My girlfriend couldn't sleep in the car as it literally sounded like it was going to fall apart, or burst into flames at any moment, but we didn't care as we were all too excited for the good times ahead! Parked up in Liverpool, grabbed a pint of beer in the bar and boarded our easyjet plane. No problems, we arrived in Schipol on time, where the passport control man laughed at my passport photo saying it looked like I'd had a rough party the night before. Cheers mate. No problems with the train this time, woohoo! We waited an hour for Andy to arrive, and headed on the train to Central Station (vic and joey were joining us the next day).

By the time we got to central station it was around 3pm. We had booked to stay again at the meeting point, where the staff remembered us which was nice, threw our bags in, paid our rent and headed straight to route 66 buying a bag of white widow to start us off. Luckily by this stage I was a good roller, and my first joint of the trip didn't resemble a tampon. It was jonny and my girlfriends first trip to the Dam and they couldn't get over the fact we had just bought a bag of weed at a counter, what an amazing place! We sparked up and immediately I felt at home again. The high from the white widow was pretty clear, and it was a standard smoke to be honest. Andy and I had a list of shops we wanted to visit, so after a couple of hours in route 66 and several joints and cups of tea later we ventured into the RLD, quickly stopping off in Hunter's to buy some NYC Diesel which I had enjoyed so much on my previous trip. I've read on here that one of the budtenders can be quite hard work in there, but the guy we had who was of Asian descent was an absolute legend and couldn't have been more helpful. I picked out a big good looking bud of NYC which came to 36euros, and we immediately headed to Baba's to buy a cake for my girlfriend as she was a non-smoker but wanted to join in on the fun. By this stage it was around 7pm, very dark and very cold, but Andy and I really wanted to visit Amnesia as we'd heard such good things about the place. Queue a confused, giggly walk where we got lost many times before eventually arriving at Amnesia. I was surprised to see it was really quiet with only two other people inside, but liked the place it had a cool vibe and the two staff inside were really helpful and friendly, and we picked up the Utopia Haze and LSD (which was awesome, trippy high which I really enjoy). We spent a couple of hours in there chatting and enjoying one of their smothies, before deciding to head to my favourite place on the planet, the Green Light for a few beers and a shisha.

Stopping at wok 2 go for a refuel we were greeted with smiles, beers and a weed shisha in the green light. I convinced my girlfriend to join in with the shisha, as it wouldn't burn her lungs and she accepted. She tucked into her brownie, and we all got stuck into the shisha and heinekens. Again this was just pure bliss, we were toasty warm, with ice cold heinekens and a tasty grape shisha filled with NYC Diesel. This continued for ten minutes when we were all chatting away, laughing about my previous mushroom experience in Dam, when I went to the toilet. My girlfriend before said "this isn't really affecting me too much, I just feel fuzzy", all I can say is famous last words. I came back from the toilet to find Emma laughing hysterically, literally crying with laughter. Jonny and Andy were the same, I asked why and they all said "we don't know... it's just... everythings just... FUNNY!" Yeah we were all well and truely wrecked. At this point I began laughing as well, we literally laughed for around 15 minutes straight not saying a word to eachother. We stayed at the greenlight until close and staggered on the short walk to our hostel, stopping for a pizza slice on the way. We got to the hostel where the bar was still open and they were letting people smoke in the bar area, so we got our bags out and continued to smoke long into the night, speaking to a few cool guys from Israel (one who literally looked like Wolverine, but I don't think enjoyed being named wolverine by us, but he took it in good spirits). At this point Emma was quite quiet, and said to me, "why are the signs so angry in Spain?" Wrecked, we all really didn't understand what she meant, after asking a few investigating questions it turned out in her fuzzy state she didn't realise she was in Amsterdam, and thought she was in Spain, and that the signs were angry. More giggles ensued before we eventually crashed out in our 18man hostel room.

Waking at 10am the next morning Vic and Joey arrived, we had our hearty hostel feast breakfast again, boiled egg, toast, and slice of processed cheese, and planned the day ahead. We decided to go on one of the free tours, check out the sex museum and go to a few new coffeeshops we wanted to check out. Calling at route 66 first to pick up two bags of AK47 (which was unfortunately not the best, and didn't match the great heights of the night before thanks to the NYC Diesel and gear from Amnesia), we sat down for a couple of hours drinking tea and experimenting with flavoured and clear skins. The clear skins were actually really nice, I can't remember the brand but it had a brazillian flag on the front, and made the taste a lot cleaner, however were quite tricky to roll. The tour was at 1pm so we quickly popped into KFC where we all nearly cried on finding out the don't serve gravy in the KFC's in Holland, that was the only low dark moment of the trip, and unfortunately I realised no where's perfect haha.

The tour was great fun we were pretty mashed, and walking around the RLD and around various monuments again made us all realise what an amazingly beautiful and picutresque city Amsterdam is, caved in History. The australian tour guide was good fun and very informative, and loved Emma's descrpition of Amsterdam: "Venice on Crack"

At the half way point, we decided to bail though, as we really craved a trip to the coffee shop, and we headed into the Greenhouse on Harleemstraat, where we got their cup winning Super Lemon Haze which was a great smoke and some bubba kush, which was nice but not on the same level as the super lemon haze. After a lovely burger and a couple of hours in there, we decided to head back toward the hostel, but first I had to negotiate the stairs... This was rather difficult and daunting after the super lemon haze but luckily I made it.

Everyone went for a power nap in the hostel around 8pm after a couple of hours and some white widow in Route 66, however, me and emma decided to stay out, and have a wonder around the RLD again, erm, checking the talent haha. We popped into Baba's to get a brownie each as Emma wanted to return to "Fuzzyland", around 10pm we headed back to the Hostel to wake everyone. But they were done for, and there was no moving them! Emma and I decided to head back to the Green Light, and got stuck into the Heinekens and Grape Shisha with the rest of the White Widow thrown in. Emma again had a little freak out with a light that changed from blue to orange. feeling really hot when it was orange and then cold when it was blue! The rest of a night is a bit of a haze and we headed home around 1am for our last day in the dam.

We were leaving around 4pm, so went to route 66 again for tea and a few joints and then to Hunter's to say our farewells. We were all pretty wrecked by the time we realised myself, Jonny, Andy and Emma had to head back to the airport, after another amazing three days. One problem, Johnny was absolutely wasted at the airport, and thought he was on a boat, so we tucked into a big mac (which seem to taste better in the Dam!) and tried to get him back to reality. Unfortunately he wondered off and returned with a box of ferrer rocher which he demolished in around 5 minutes. Plane home was uneventful, but I decided to drive us home in the shit heap, as I really didn't trust the car anyway, never mind if a half stoned Jonny was behind the wheel.

That was back in January! I miss the place so much and hope to go back for St paddys day next year. I'm a rookie so there's not really much point recommending many places on here, but I'd definitely recommend checking out the Route 66 for a chill out, it's a great place, and the green light is a brilliant smoker friendly bar.

Now make the most of your time in Amsterdam and I hope your trips are as enjoyable as mine have been!

Cheers,

Lawrence

Hi TwoCanucks. Cheers man, I would definitely recommend it but maybe go for the less strong ones and do what the guy in the smartshop says haha!

It is fun to be Jesus for a couple of hours though. There was an american guy in there on my second trip, who must've been close to 60 years old who went to the counter and bought the strongest ones asking "will this give me a good trip". I really wish I could've joined him to see what happened to him the legend.

By the way really enjoyed your travelogue too mate.

Peace

Cheers roll up, so much I missed out including when we left jonny accidentally behind at a crossing, he was too scared to walk across when the man started flashing red, so ended up about half a mile behind us paranoid and lost.

Hoping to go back in March, will put my dates in the who's in town section, hope to see some of you sooner or later in amsterdam.

Peace

Good write up, very entertaining. Similar thing happened to me with truffles on my first trip back in september. Sitting in the Vondelpark I felt as if the world had disappeared around me and I was sitting on a plateau floating in pure blackness. I should really get round to writing that up. Crazy experience.

The Green Light bar sounds pretty awesome. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in the city.

Haha high tree I have been to that exact some place! Crazy experience. Don't get me wrong I go to Amsterdam for the good times and most importantly the weed, but it's nice if you have the time to just dedicate a half day to a crazy truffle experience! We were fine around 6 or 7pm and able to enjoy the night back on the weed and beer.

Get that report wrote up mate, looking forward to it.

you spent so much time at Route 66!! :o Glad you got to see a few different shops in the end.

I agree that Amnesia is worth a visit, even if it is a tad tricky to track down. You were bang on with the LSD from there - it`s proving to be a popular strain judging by the amount of comments it has had on here. I skipped it when I was last there in August, as it was a bit twiggy looking. I opted for the Laughing Buddha which ended up being nothing special. Lsd it`ll be next time...

The Shrooms experience sounds freaky. Amsterdam ain`t a nice place off your face. I think i`ll stick to the weed, as I hail from Wales, and was brought up on Psilocybin - enough of that shit for one life. 8)

I digress.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the amazing reports laurence - was a really fun read and I could picture your favourite city very clearly with your description. Look forward to the next report chap!

Cheers again guys. Couldn't agree more with you lazerbeam, I got to a few more coffeeshops but can't remember there names at all haha, Route 66 was just so easy close to where we were staying, but definitely next time will get to more places.

Can't wait for the next trip, and don't rule out the mushrooms entirely, I'm sure you Welsh folk can handle it just fine!
