A spanish guy i know reckons that within 10 years at the latest spain will be like amsterdam, not legal but tolerated and decriminalised, because spain does not have an industry other than dwindling tourist one and that marijuana trade will help revive it, he says that it is smoked so openly out there and that the police dont care at all,

Most definitely. Nol gave an invite to come to his place in Spain, gonna take him up on it one of these days. I've seen his pics on Facebook having wonderful parties with huge bongs surrounded by the beautiful countryside and oh so wished I was there.

I believe there will an intermediate period such as I described in which "coffeehouses" will be just like coffeeshops except for the cannabis sales. Smoker friendly, if you will, like many of the bars. And likely owned by some of the larger players, catering to foreign tourists.

Speaking to the manager of a coffeeshop within the 250m zone around a school, they reckon they will be just as profitable if their cannabis license is pulled and they go back to serving alcohol. They served a _lot_ of beer and booze, and will of course be smoker friendly. And they are not known as a prime cannabis buying place, like Dampkring or Barneys. IOW they don't sell as much as the big guys, but they sold a hell of a lot of alcohol.

The only niggling bit is scoring some stash, but that can't be too hard. Lots of Dutch entrepreneurs, you know :-)

Me, I always wondered why the Jamaicans don't embrace ganga and pull their country out of poverty with it. It's a hell of a lot closer to the U.S. than Amsterdam, and far cheaper as well. But with the advent of MMJ here, many in the states in which it is available don't want/need to get to Amsterdam as much in the past. But, if the Jamaicans cleaned things up and embraced ganga tourism, the sky is the limit (sorry for the pun :-)

I was in Detroit last week and someone pulled out some green and said "It's all over the place now that we have medical. A card is easy to get and the price is dropping rapidly everywhere".

I've wondered the exact same thing and thought the pun was good lol Been to Jamaica many times and stayed at a couples only resort one of the times. The concierge actually said to me "This is Jamaica, you can smoke whatever you want, wherever you want!" Well I wasn't sure if he just meant the resort, because I wouldn't smoke one in front of a cop lol but have smoked many times by Dunn's River Falls... one of my favorite places to go in Ocho Rios. Watching that water cascade over the rocks is so soothing, especially if you break away from people.

Up in the mountains by Bob Marley's old home and grave there were throngs of people trying to sell stalks outside the huge fence - totally surreal seeing them holding them up in plain site as if they were selling t-shirts. Jamaica has wonderful weed and hash, just not as many varieties. T'would be nice for that to change - Jamaica is more my element and not too far. Makes total sense to us, however not to the greedy, idiotic politicians.

I know I've said it before but... I came to the 'dam back in '95 for the weed and the party, but my wife and I RETURN (over and over) for the society that allows (allowed?) such freedom in the first place. I remember, after a few trips to the 'dam my Mom asked me if I would visit Vancouver... looks awesome but it just wasn't Amsterdam. We fell in love with the international vibe on the town, not just the Dutchies but the Moroccan and Turkish flavor along with the folks visiting from Europe, North America and beyond! Their tolerance of not just us smokers but of gay tourists (we have many gay friends and family at home), drunk weekenders etc. while maintaining that distinctively "Dutch" way of life was intriguing!

What pisses me off BIG time is how much shit we had to put up with from Dutch folks (Dutchies, not Moroccan or Int'l folk) during the Bush era. How could you vote him in (we did, I didn't)? You better not make the same mistake again blah blah blah. One girl we were hanging with said "our most conservative politician is your most liberal". NOW they're electing their version of Sarah Palin and the friggin' tea party to office?

If the fascist vibe continues I wouldn't go back. We have a good friend who could easily hook us up but we don't go to score herb, we do that enough at home! Kill the atmosphere and the Netherlands will turn into a bland, white stuck-up country with no more street cred.

Excellent post, although I would hope that even if the law does come in to effect, Amsterdam can still maintain the cool vibe it has at the moment. I honestly don't believe it will turn in to some kind of cesspit of intolerance. Right-wing mania is being driven mercilessly in the media here as well - to what end, I am unsure.

I loved the bold part especially. Sums up succinctly all that is great about that place!
