Ok, I'm gonna divert from my usual and start from right now, working backwards... So many shops, so much hasj!
We're at the apartment having cancelled our dinner reservations in favor of a no schedule evening. Good thing too, we already ate a street dog on the prins and just finished fries at the Chipsy King...ALERT they now have a cheese sauce that looks like American cheese whiz and tastes like Gouda! I'm just about to phone Gapie and see if he's up for a session...
We've just returned from the Spui where after a big ass walk through the Jordaan and headed for our first Tweede visit of the trip we make an unexpected stop instead:
NEW TIMES
We've stayed at the NH city centre a couple of times, yet never stepped in... I even thought it was a new shop! It's a good sized shop with a smoking area in the back but no one seems to segregate the mixed section from the front so we sit next to the bar and order a couple of cups of coffee and scan the menu. A hand written Tbisla tops the menu at 12 euro but the tender suggests the house special at ten... "it's what I smoke"!
Coffee served and we settle in. I gotta say, I've become a devotee of the local, Moroccan run shops. The coffee is superb, the service is friendly and the house hasjs are always top notch! New Times special is no exception: fresh and fudge, it breaks up soooo easily and the chunks stay moist and squishy without being cakey. The stone is mellow and body relaxing while keeping the brain happily busy with a mild taste that was perhaps its only drawback.
En route to the Spui we were recovering from a lost couple of hours ago in our vain attempt at stopping at Grey Area for a grab and go. We headed out through Dam square earlier and not having been to the GA in a couple of trips we wound up rounding the Herengracht on the south/west side of Rozengracht so we wound up near Dolphins (more on that) and headed down the Prins thinking we were headed toward Anne Frank house area...wrong! But what we DID find was another first time shop for us:
EASY TIMES
Tucked canal side, it's a beautiful shop with a large bar with several menus laid out. The shop has a nice blend of locals and tourists and by far THE best smoking area I have ever seen. Like a cross between a chill out lounge and nightclub, its cozy couch nooks are so comfy a chick across from us was snoozing while her friends toked. Subtle white and blue lights make for a perfect, welcoming ambience.
We pick up pear looza, coke and a g of Primera at 13. Rather than a fudge vibe, this hasj had that magical brown sugar feel, a looser all resin crystal treat with an exquisite taste and a fresh fragrance. Wonderful bake, it was worth the premium!
A note: I've managed a photo of every menu but bluebird with their no photos graphic in red printed on their menu. Fly by night, you'll get them all!

Thanks everyone...just got back to the apartment prepping with some king Hassan before ordering up some Thai for dinner.
To catch up, yesterday we awoke and headed down to hill street for our morning caffeine. We're smoking leftovers so we don't pick anything up and stop off at betty's for a smoke and one of the few shops left that squeeze fresh oj for you! We chat with the owner and our buddy and it's just a really cool, hang out, nothing special going on scene and just how we like to spend an early afternoon in the centrum!
Our stomachs are giving us the nod so it's time for lunch and after some wandering we wind up near enough to Haarlemerstraat so my wife suggests Barneys for burgers and beers. Good call, since they're surprisingly quiet and we belly up to a table, browsing the menu and smoking hasj. I swear, the novelty will NEVER wear off! Limited to the breakfast menu we happily choose a chicken blt and breakfast burger and two drafts. By no means cheap we love the atmosphere and the service, versus their coffeeshop, is always fantastic.
Nothing on the radar we eschew the big shops which are getting busy along with the entire Harlemmerstraat and cut into the Brauersgracht and into
137
Never had a problem with this shop, especially since it was a daily stop when we stayed down the street. Coffee, still amazing. Selection, limited and the same with it's bizzaro pricing (ie 9.40 gram). Atmosphere? Awesome! Canal bridge view and college age Moroccan kids hanging out, playing backgammon trying to impress each other. Coming from a greater Boston Italian family I can appreciate guidos hanging out, it was like jersey shore! The chicks dressed hot and the guys pretended not to notice!

Epsilon, the vibe is PURE, unadultereated AMSTERDAM!
I'm happy to report that by all appearances the coffeeshop scene is alive and well at the moment. In fact, I noticed coffeeshop Monaco on the spui was opened... Didn't that shop close? Lots of new new menus, fresh paint, help wanted signs. Hardly what you would expect to see if the shops expected ANY sort of closure in the near future!
At 137 we picked up the super polm at 9 and change for the gram. A "fudge" entry it was surprisingly strong, carrying a dense warm body high and and comfy hoody head stone. Really quite impressive as it broke up soft and squishy and was tops on all accounts!
No surprise, we're ready for an apartment break and it's back out, exchange money, find a shop. I've been a madman about locating places I haven't been to yet and, well, I think the trudging around town is starting to get on my wife's nerves and while she's still being a doll we get lost in the Jordaan, seeing nothing but high end clothing stores and just when we're about to abort i see a sign..it's a smart shop! Where there's a smart shop, there's a coffeeshop! Lo and behold, we turn the counter and find
DOLPHINS
Wow, where am I? A perfect heard great things about but never been there before shop! Bright and colorful with a pure only lovers delight upstairs complete with bongs and vaporizers everywhere. The menu, behind the counter like we're in an ice cream shop, is cartoon like and lays out a small but good selection. The lovely Italian budtender acts quite flirty when I take pics of the menu, telling me that she "is not on the menu" which I'm sure was just friggin' delightful for my wife! Lol
Ten euros later we're heading downstairs with a gram of royal dolphin. Man, cannot beat the price for this brown sugar gem of a hasj. All resins that somehow manage to stay together like a half melted piece of maple candy. The comfy downstairs, despite lack of view or sunlight, provided us with a most welcoming environment in which to partake and the royal easily rose to the occasion!
We head back to the spui requiring nourishment and our favorite pizza joint is close so we devour a couple of pies...one onion, pepper and the other was a four cheese monstrosity that was richer than bill gates!
A standard visit to our old pal
SOFTLAND
followed for a cup, some online time for the wife and a gram of my old friend the King! Never been as good as my first time and certainly not worth the 14 euro for the gram the hasj was, none the less, a member of the fudge family but more of a generic no-name version...no brand name quality here.
A stop off at green place for more end of night sf kush and og raskell and a new movie...slasher! Pretty cool low budget horror flick and our night softly comes to a close,
Like right about now!

Hey purple, I don't smoke cigs but always roll joints with my hasj.. I don't like "tossed salads" because I like one high at a time! Pipes for me provide too thin a smoke stream, I love a rich fat hit and find that a joint fits the bill. Of course, I smoke my weed in cigar wraps so i may not be the best to judge...
Woke up early, about 7, to enjoy as much of our last full day as possible and to hit the Anne Frank house, our first visit in almost 10 years. So by 8:15 we're looking for an open shop to smoke and fulfill my desperate need for morning cafe. I know Hunter's is open but, en route, we see a very old familiar sign...
PICK UP THE PIECES
yep, that shit hole! Lol. It was a first stop almost a decade ago but it reminds me physically of every other shop on the street from paradise to extasy so my expectations were, shall I say, low? We are already like the third customers of the morning so my wife grabs a table in back while I check out the menu. Not as bad pricing wise as I feared and while ordering up coffee I'm shown th Red Leb, first i've seen on the trip so far. 15 euro for 1.5 grams and the pre made pack looks decent. I roll the dice and pick up the pack, asking if I can snap a menu pic. To my surprise the older Indian gentleman was cool with it but gave me a hard time after snapping three shots trying to get the best one! A small tip and polite thank you put him back in a good mood. Upon opening the bag, I could smell the red and when I began to break it up i was surprised at how soft and pliable it was...fresh Red Leb? Here? A nice taste, that "third" hasj that's neither moroc nor black, but that floral in between. A mellow head stone that was a perfect wake and bake and coffee so strong it bordered on Turkish!
A visit to the Anne Frank house followed, I could write volumes on her and the annex. We've been before but it's finally finished and we enjoy and appreciate the renovation as it now guides you through the history as you go through the house. We enoy visiting her REAL home on the Merry in the Old South, where she actually lived and was happy!
We head out into a light rain and warming temperatures desperate for a recuperating smoke...Black Star, closed. Continuing down the Rozangracht that no named shop with the grafitti, closed. We reach the Marnixsraat and as we're about to hoof it to 1e Hulp I spot lit "coffeeshop" sign overlooking the canal, very quaint. We round the corner and see..
FUNKY MUNKY
Hello? new shop?
We step into the dealer room and the menu sits in front and all the weed and hasj are stacked in clear containers. The very gracious middle aged bald dutch tender let's me photo both weed and menu, that's when i spot the jar of Whie Widow. Huge fluffy buds, he opens it and woah nelly, what a smell! On special at 2.5 grams for 15 it's a no brainer. The shop is huge, gorgeous, clean and overlooks the canal. A pool table sits in the middle and a computer for use on the side. Huge chess board, couches and a spot at the bar. The tender brings us the coffees complete with a side of steamed milk and a gift of a funky munky grinder! Only later I notice that it is, in fact,, the old Softland 2. Is it good news that new owners are still buying and or taking over shops? Will smoke the ww soon...

First thing's first...
I would like to thank Gapie for his hospitality, energy and enthusiasm! Damn, he's a one man Amsterdam coffeeshop welcoming committee. I KNOW I'll be seeing you next time!
Cantona, it was a pleasure! you are one interesting dude, I certainly hope we can get together again, perhaps a trip out to the great northwest is in order! My apologies for not making it back out for round two.. Us geezers kinda hit the wall tonight after a full week of crazy sampling. I want to say an official "great to meet you" and keep in touch, will ya? Enjoy your long weekend and Christmas gift later!
After the munkey it was apartment, money chained, back out for some shopping. A quick couple of hot dogs, some gifts for home and it was into yet another first for us...can't wait to put 'em all together and sort them out.
ROCKLAND
At the entrance to the spui off rozengracht this was one hard core local shop. Dog eared menu that the polite enough budtender, an attractive Dutch chick, apologized for not allowing me to photo. It's ok, every other aspect was pure bargain local from good coffee to 2 grams Moroc royal for 16 euro that was a strong, fudgy block.
The city is getting busy now so I'm surprised that grey area is, well, do able so we stop in for a take away. We're beginning that sad end of trip stocking up of product so I'm impressed when the budtender takes his time and we go over the strains, their cures, their tastes... I finally pick three:
LA Woman
surprisingly upbeat smoke, I was dead to the world after smoking with gapie and cantona and this helped me survive long enough to grab a takeaway pizza back to our apt. Strong but a mild taste...great cure and smaller buds but a quality bud for sure
Strawberry kush
Cheisel
Couldn't resist, they look great but I haven't had a chance to sample yet!
And finally, after numerous phone, email and texts..I meet Gapie! Outside Basjoe's, it's always nice to finally meet someone I've only known online (especially since this is the only forum I've ever really been in) and Gapies enthisiastic welcome had me feeling at home immediately. We settle in and within 10-15 minutes in comes Cantona! It was a treat to have a in depth conversation about American sports, politics and culture in the dam (oddly enough we rarely meet fellow Americans over here) with another American and this dude has some cool assed perspective on the world having travelled most of it! Gapie starts first with a haze, I spin a moroc royale, Cantona sparks a Nepal creme laced spliff from 420 and another mix of Gapie's bud with some, i think, purple kush from GP that I brought. Purple or raskell...not sure but I was plastered and after an hour or so we headed back to the apartment to recupe!
Perhaps the last pick up of the trip was a g of parvarti and, of course, a 12 sack of BUTTER from Highly Blessed at voyagers. Despite being under the weather, he and the cool chick behind the counter provided top service, warming my milk and pampering us to the highest order. Damn, I may have to give the hotel try!
The parvarti is real good, earthy, spicy, smooth and a nice body stone that made our visit our last for the evening.
The butter?
PREPPING IT NOW!

The butter?
PREPPING IT NOW!
its bouquet sweet & pungent, its bite will roast
