I would like to thank Gapie for his hospitality, energy and enthusiasm! Damn, he's a one man Amsterdam coffeeshop welcoming committee. I KNOW I'll be seeing you next time!

Cantona, it was a pleasure! you are one interesting dude, I certainly hope we can get together again, perhaps a trip out to the great northwest is in order! My apologies for not making it back out for round two.. Us geezers kinda hit the wall tonight after a full week of crazy sampling. I want to say an official "great to meet you" and keep in touch, will ya? Enjoy your long weekend and Christmas gift later!

After the munkey it was apartment, money chained, back out for some shopping. A quick couple of hot dogs, some gifts for home and it was into yet another first for us...can't wait to put 'em all together and sort them out.

ROCKLAND

At the entrance to the spui off rozengracht this was one hard core local shop. Dog eared menu that the polite enough budtender, an attractive Dutch chick, apologized for not allowing me to photo. It's ok, every other aspect was pure bargain local from good coffee to 2 grams Moroc royal for 16 euro that was a strong, fudgy block.

The city is getting busy now so I'm surprised that grey area is, well, do able so we stop in for a take away. We're beginning that sad end of trip stocking up of product so I'm impressed when the budtender takes his time and we go over the strains, their cures, their tastes... I finally pick three:

LA Woman
surprisingly upbeat smoke, I was dead to the world after smoking with gapie and cantona and this helped me survive long enough to grab a takeaway pizza back to our apt. Strong but a mild taste...great cure and smaller buds but a quality bud for sure

Strawberry kush
Cheisel

Couldn't resist, they look great but I haven't had a chance to sample yet!

And finally, after numerous phone, email and texts..I meet Gapie! Outside Basjoe's, it's always nice to finally meet someone I've only known online (especially since this is the only forum I've ever really been in) and Gapies enthisiastic welcome had me feeling at home immediately. We settle in and within 10-15 minutes in comes Cantona! It was a treat to have a in depth conversation about American sports, politics and culture in the dam (oddly enough we rarely meet fellow Americans over here) with another American and this dude has some cool assed perspective on the world having travelled most of it! Gapie starts first with a haze, I spin a moroc royale, Cantona sparks a Nepal creme laced spliff from 420 and another mix of Gapie's bud with some, i think, purple kush from GP that I brought. Purple or raskell...not sure but I was plastered and after an hour or so we headed back to the apartment to recupe!

Perhaps the last pick up of the trip was a g of parvarti and, of course, a 12 sack of BUTTER from Highly Blessed at voyagers. Despite being under the weather, he and the cool chick behind the counter provided top service, warming my milk and pampering us to the highest order. Damn, I may have to give the hotel try!

The parvarti is real good, earthy, spicy, smooth and a nice body stone that made our visit our last for the evening.

The butter?

PREPPING IT NOW!

great to meet you! enjoyed smoking yesterday for sure. have a safe trip home! your welcome in the great northwest anytime!
educating myself and waiting for the next trip.

It dawned on me...Gapie is Amsterdam's Kramer! He knows EVERYONE, greeting everyone by name as they pass by Basjoe's or as they enter.

THE LAST NIGHT

You know, the last night (especially after a week long spliff fest) is like we're in limbo - we smoked, ate and cavorted as much as possible, indulging until we were full so now we're sitting on the couch, mindlessly staring at the tv with the ever present packed suitcases in view, reminding us that our time is just about up :(

Of course, we still got us some smokin' to do...first up, STRAWBERRY KUSH from Grey Area. Ok, this shit was like someone dipped the bud in jam! Just the dry draw ALONE was the strongest "flavor" weed I have ever tasted: it beat the old Garlic Bud from Sensi Seeds and Maple Bud (both, by the way, strong tasting but absolutely disGUSTING). The only downside: it did NOT burn well. We had to relight before nearly every toke, not a good sign unfortunately! Every other aspect including the potent stone was excellent!

Next..it's time: BUTTER ME UP!

I remove the 12 euro chunk, 0.20 grams and surprisingly large. It's butter yellow color and fragrance belie what's to come... Different from the other heavy hitters in its category: Basjoe's Terminator from a couple of years back and Bonglord's divine spoon in that it still resembles a "solid", although barely held together I can break & sprinkle it over tobacco and I use the entire piece for a rather large spliff.

Here we go!

Carefully toasting the tip I coax the first toke - sharp, not as floral as the smell, it tastes like POWER. I pass the j to my wife, she tokes, and after two apiece we rest and enjoy! The high starts from the top of your head and works down your body. Clean and psychedelic, it's impossible to compare with the spoon due to the shear amount of butter we are consuming. If we weren't at the end of the journey I fear we never would have finished the spliff!

I think we also smoked some of that LA Lady but, honestly, I have no memory of what it was like. Wow, what a shock!

Pictures are uploading to Photobucket, I'll be posting soon!

Back to work tomorrow... It's ok, we feel like we'll be back and believe that the coffeeshop scene WILL still be thriving upon our return!

oustanding report all through, thanks for ltaking th time out of your holiday.

when smoking something like ridiculous ice hash or budder/butter i hate the taste to smoke it in a spliff with just baccy!!:) i will always find some milder weed like orange bud, laughing bhudda or morning glory etc and make a spliff of that with a bit of baccy, then sprinkle the concentrates on top. just my way!

well hasjdreamer i've been inspired by your hash smoking, so i became the nerd/geek/hash-lover and extracted all of your comments about just the ordinary hash that you smoked this trip ... i have ignored the weed, the ice and any of the specials such as butter and spoon and just focused on the hashish

my question to you is this ... if i were to make it to amsterdam anytime soon, which would be your top three recommendations for some good hashish smoking?

Himalaya Gold
2.1 grams for 20 euro
Hill Street Blues

"They had single grams for eleven but it looked too good for only the one! Light brown all over like a Maroc without the crust. It is sooooooo soft and squishy but not cakey and a little bit goes a long way ... The hasj? Killer! Stoney, creepy, it left me rather baked and dizzy off a small spliff. It tastes great, almost like a very high quality Lebanese but with a quality black hasj stone and burns magnificently!"

Golden Soles
1 gram at 14 euro
Rusland

"Medium brown it's pretty solid, almost hard but breaks up soft making me think this is one dense hasj! I roll maybe a bit under half a gram and spark her up to live bob marly tunes. Sweet start but the flavor quickly matured to an earthier heavy taste and within a couple of tokes I realize, dang... I'm getting pretty friggin high over here, like REAL high...like icolator high!"

Twizzla
1 g at 13or14 euros
Green Place

"It was so pure and light it looked ready to break apart like a sweet piece of maple candy yet when broken apart it begged to reunite with its kin making rolling that spliff a bit more challenging! Of course the purple did not help...

"The taste of the hasj was sweet and light and ridiculously fresh as it appeared to melt into the tobacco with no effort resulting in a smooth smoke. The high was just that...high without the heavy body or head ... Strong and spacey."

Tijdigan (sp?)
2 grams at 10 euro per gram
Babylon

"The ever smiling, always cheerful budtender enthusiastically shows me a huge block, breaking it apart gently in front of my nose. My olfactory senses go into overdrive and I gleefully order up two grams. We take our bounty along with the best coffee so far to the smoking room.

"The result? Dense but not hard, dark brown and fudgy in texture it breaks up well developing an instant shell keeping each tiny chunk segregated for an easy roll but not as smooth a smoking pattern (I could have broken the bits up better). None the less, a choco-sweet taste envelopes my mouth and a quick wave of warm goodness to the head alerts me to the potency of this 10 euro hasj."

Jungle Cream
1 gram
Mellow Yellow

"Back at the apt we spin up a jungle cream... Unlike the sharp slivers that snap into brittle pieces with the katsus Nepal ice, this hasj has a more squishy feel and breaks up into softer chunks. The high, strong but the sharp nepalese edges were softened and the hasj offered a well balanced attack on both mind and body resulting in a warmer high and a cooler stone! Magnificent!"

Lebanese
Voyagers

"The hasj had a bright, floral bordering in fruity fragrance and a rich, sweet flavor that provided an uplifting, giddy high."

Arabica Special Moroccan
2 grams
Arabica Lounge

"Very friendly Moroccan tender who enthusiastically pointed to the Arabica special, cheaper than other Morocs on the menu at only 10 euro per. He shows me a slab, braking it in front of my nose revealing a dense choco goodness wafting up like a rif mountain steam bath! I choose 2 grams and ask for a menu pic. He hesitates but says 'go ahead' and I snap a couple before heading in for coffee. We score the perfect window seat and our coffee is brought to us by the smiling keeper and IT IS DELICIOUS. The hasj, dense and choco like was quite similar Babylons Tijdighan."

House Special
Old Amsterdam

"High enough off the hasj. I mean, it wasn't bad, clean and a bit light on intensity but without the choco charm of Tijdighan or the Arabica special nor the intensity of the Rusland sole."

Triple X
0.5 grams for 12.50 euros
Bluebird

"The tender gently opens the half gram of xxx revealing the sticky oily glob of black, hashy fuel. This brings me back, nice to see some things don't change... This was my fav hasj back in the day! Same recommendation, freeze it if it gets too sticky. Now this half g went far... Two normal, full sized splits and let me tell you, it was pheNOMinal, far superior to katsu's delicious offering and second only to Bonglord's spoon in strength. Of course how can one compare ANYTHING to spoon? Perhaps our sampling of butter will at least give Bonglords entry SOMETHING to spar with. Yeah, can't wait! Ok, the triple x was sharp like a knife to you lung with a soaringly strong high, clear as the bells that ring on the quarter behind our apartment."

Malana
0.8 grams for 12.50 euros
Bluebird

"The malana, with it's sleek black rectangular slabs was obviously not as good but a prime black that I only see in bluebird...heavier and rounder but still surprisingly 'thin' in a good, Nepalese way... "

House Special
10 euros per gram
New Times

"I gotta say, I've become a devotee of the local, Moroccan run shops. The coffee is superb, the service is friendly and the house hasjs are always top notch! New Times special is no exception: fresh and fudge, it breaks up soooo easily and the chunks stay moist and squishy without being cakey. The stone is mellow and body relaxing while keeping the brain happily busy with a mild taste that was perhaps its only drawback."

Primera
1 gram at 13 euros per gram
Easy Times

"Rather than a fudge vibe, this hasj had that magical brown sugar feel, a looser all resin crystal treat with an exquisite taste and a fresh fragrance. Wonderful bake, it was worth the premium!"

Super Polm
1 gram for "9 and change" euros
137

"A 'fudge' entry it was surprisingly strong, carrying a dense warm body high and and comfy hoody head stone. Really quite impressive as it broke up soft and squishy and was tops on all accounts!"

Royal Dolphin
1 gram
Dolphins

"Man, cannot beat the price for this brown sugar gem of a hasj. All resins that somehow manage to stay together like a half melted piece of maple candy. The comfy downstairs, despite lack of view or sunlight, provided us with a most welcoming environment in which to partake and the royal easily rose to the occasion!"

King Hassan
1 gram
Softland

"My old friend the King! Never been as good as my first time and certainly not worth the 14 euro for the gram the hasj was, none the less, a member of the fudge family but more of a generic no-name version...no brand name quality here."

Red Leb
1.5 grams for 15 euros
Pick Up The Pieces

"Upon opening the bag, I could smell the red and when I began to break it up i was surprised at how soft and pliable it was...fresh Red Leb? Here? A nice taste, that 'third' hasj that's neither moroc nor black, but that floral in between. A mellow head stone that was a perfect wake and bake and coffee so strong it bordered on Turkish!"

Moroc Royale
2 grams for 16 euros
Rockland

"A strong, fudgy black."

Parvati
Voyagers

"The parvarti is real good, earthy, spicy, smooth and a nice body stone."

Thanks SS'67 that is an excellent guide for us hash lovers. Perhaps a dedicated thread about each variety and comments attached, especially useful if stickied.

EDIT: I'll have a bash at it over the next day or two whilst i wait for the 5th

SS67...you are my freakin' HERO! :)

We HAVE to meet up in the 'dam, dam it! And, you know, if you're EVER in Boston...

I have one more missing day to fill in - Coffeeshop Balou and Saint.

Balou we hit, what was it Friday? Yeah, Friday... we stopped by Rembrandt Square to shop for Christmas ornaments for the family back home. Intending on stopping at Andalucia, we stopped at Balou instead 'cause, again, another first!

Unfortunately I neglected to write any notes...I recollect purchasing the super polm but for the life of me I can't recall any details. I DO remember liking the shop...damn, we did some heavy assed smoking!

I remember stopping by Saint...it was dark, we were looking for Other Side and I kept scoping around the other, smaller Bushdoctor and the wife was getting restless when we stopped down this tiny alley and saw the bright florescent "coffeeshop" light and stepped in to THE most dive-like local shop I have EVER seen! The size of a taxi cab and just as yellow - the dreaded budtender was super cool, holding the menu for me to take a good picture. Sodas and again, SOME smoke but I can't even remember what we purchased...I'll have to scope the menu again. THAT'S why I like to update regularly, my brain cells just can't keep up!

SS67...let me contemplate a bit. I'm pretty sure I have my favorites, they were pretty obvious but I'm off to play hockey tonight (I'm the goalie geezer in a 20 something indoor floor league) so I'll update when I get back and am recovering with a fat spliff and a motrin!
