Parking in Amsterdam

Post by SkinAnother »

I am now living in a suburb of Paris. Myself and my girlfriend were looking to drive to Amsterdam just for a few days. Has anyone done this before? How have you found parking? (Expensive, difficult to find etc.) I know it is quite cheap to book a train if you book at least 30 days in advance but we were looking at going sometime next week so the cheapest way to travel there would be by car.

Cheers Guys.

Merry Christmas!!

I always go to Amsterdam by car, and I know two places to park your car.

The best is to go to Gasperplaas camping, even if it's closed you can park your car in front of the entry door and it's free

You can also park at the park n ride under the Ajax Stadium, but you have to pay (I think it's 15e a day but I'm not sure)

the very first time we went to the dam, we were wonderfully ignorant 18 year olds. we just spontaniously decided to go to the dam, during a smoking session at home. we booked the ferry and a mate drove his parents car (a big rover estate) down to dover, and we drove through france and belgium just heading in the direction we needed to go. absolutly no research done at all, we had no idea what to expect. as we got into amsterdam we decided we would need to park up somewhere... bearing in mind we had absolutly no maps or anything, and the driver had never driven abroad on the right side of the road... and before we knew it we were all crapping ourselves as we broke every road law as we tried to make our way through centrall amsterdam... bikes, trams, crazy road layouts etc. we managed to get all the way through the city and came out the other end, and tried to abandon the car in an office block car park, but the receptionist wouldnt let us, so we had to get back in the car and out of no where we found an NCP car park. we dropped the car off, and proceeded to discover the greatest city going... we all got completely fucked as you would imagine.... hours later, still having not booked a hotel, at 9.50pm, we walked around a corner and saw the car park that we had parked in... (an amazing piece of luck, because none of us had actually bothered to remember where the car park was).... randomly the driver decided he should check if it was actually ok to leave the car overnight, as we hadn't checked earlier. it turned out that the car park was closing in ten minutes and any cars left over night would be clamped!! so we had no choice but to drive the car out of the car park and try and find some where new to park. we were all completely smashed... but somehow we made it. we drive and drove untill country side started, so my mate just pulled up next to a canal on a main road in the middle of no where and all 4 of us slept in our seats. when we woke up next morning we headed back into town for a smoke before driving back to calais and home.

:D aaaah to be 18 again.... i just couldnt imagine being that blissfully ignorant again...

Thanks Panog, that will come in useful :D Looking forward to seeing you soon!

CSS - That sounds brilliant!! If it was me and my mates going that could easily be an option but seeing as it's the missus I'm going with I don't think that would happen. Great read though
