Hello!
My girlfriend and I are travelling to Amsterdam (ferry from Newcastle) for a short break on the 1st of March 2011, however, her passport expires Jun/Jul 2011. Will it be okay to use? Or would she need another passport to be issued? As I have heard some people say you need 6 months valid to travel, and other says 3! Any ideas?

My Missus recently had the same worry but we were told the following - If travelling on a UK Passport and when travelling within the EU, it just needs to be valid for the period of the visit.

However, I would just call your local passport office or who you booked your flights through for confirmation.

Real problems can occur if you are detained for any reason, (e.g. illness), and end up over-staying on a passport that may expire within a week or so of you returning.

I went in November and it runs out in April. I called passport office who put you in touch with the embassy of that country. For holland it doesn't even need to last the duration of your stay, as long as your valid in day of entry you'll be fine..
Mine runs out on the 26th April and I'm still going to use it for 420 the week before..

Her passport would still prove who she is, even if it has expired. She won't be refused entry to the UK if she is British just because her passport has expired. A secondary form of ID might be helpful.

Absolutely right Ash, but will be less hassle, explaining and security checks if its in date. I wouldnt like to try it.. lol

I asked on this issue a few months ago as I'm going in april with my passport expiring in august. It was said by a member then that they had actually checked up on the issue (or linked to another post saying so) with the Dutch embassy or something and they confirmed that as long as it's still valid on the date of return there is no problems.

As said the ONLY issue would be to check with the airline in case they have other issues with short dated passports. Personally cant see it being a problem at all as it's valid and the destination country is ok with it.

Good Question Marco i have often wondered that !! why the hell do you have to pay for documentation to leave your country ? i think you should be entitled to it as a citizen !? the Spanish use an ID card and they can use that for travel ! whats the script with other EU countries concerning passports/id cards do you have to pay for them ? I suppose we in Britain because we are an island and not connected too mainland europe have to come in/out the country the same way as anyone travelling here so maybe thats the reason ?

It costs a fortune for a passport nowadays aswell another way for the government to get cash out ya !!

Funny how when it became clear to UK citizens that the ID card could be used as an alternative to a passport to EU countries that the UK government then came up with several reasons to withdraw the national ID card system, the main reason being the cost (bullshit). I dont suppose the fact that the ID card was half the cost of a British pasport had anything to do with it!.

Ah yes, like us Americans, you are averse to a national ID card.

the scrapping of the national database was the best thing this scumbag coallition has done,
unlike the rest of europes id card systems (where the persons details are stored on a chip on the card) our gestapo rulers wanted all 60million citizens details stored on government databases, that all 10 fingerprints (why when 1 is more than enough to identify some1) palm prints, iris scans & the worst of all facial recognition, because every single town & city is now saturated with cctv this means that they will know your EVERY single move you make, i know what your gonna say' what if i drive they wont see me then' but they thought of that aswell, thats where so called global warming & pay as you go driving (with those lovely little black boxes) come to the governments rescue, hitler wouldve loved that technology
&just like the dna database every single crime commited would be matched up to the databases, so we would no longer be a country of innocent until proven guilty, but guilty till proven innocent, trust me we are much better off without the national database,
+your right cisco wtf should we have to pay to leave the country, but hold on theirs a way around this, open up the channel tunnel for cars to drive through, but why would they wanna do that when all those little old rich men are making millions a year fleecing us,
