This was a short sharp session in the dam. Arriving early Friday, one heavy day and night of carnage, and then up early Saturday and back home. This trip would see us discover some of the best smoke I’ve had in years, and it has completely changed my strains of choice from diesels and hazes, to kushs.

My friend and I have been well up for this for a couple of weeks, and the recent info/reviews on this forum have been particularly good, so we were well armed with plans of attack. We literally had no time to waste.

Arriving at Luton airport with time to spare at 5.30am, we set the tone for the coming day with a couple of pints of stella. Various small delays at both ends meant that despite the easy flight we arrived nearly an hour later than expected and it was 10am when we finally stepped out of central station.

Chomping at the bit as the train pulled up, we power walked straight over to Haarlemerstraat, jumping past bikes and traffic and leaping over puddles as we sped to our first stop. The weather was dry although underfoot it was wet, considering it was forecast heavy rain, this was a great alternative. I already knew that we’d be going for breakfast at la grotte (cheaper than barneys), and i also already knew that we’d be having a look at the Pink Kush from popeyes just over the road. I forget who it was that raved about the pink kush on this forum, but whoever it was, they were right! The bud tender in popeyes popped the lid off the box to reveal the most fantastic deep kush smell. The buds were big, dense and sticky. I nearly took the bud tenders arm off i was so eager to grab some of that. My mate decided on a haze, for a morning sativa, and took some of the Mango Haze. The mango had a decent haze smell in the box, but it was a bit leafy-er than the kush.

Breakfast was reasonable, it did the trick. The real highlight of breakfast was the Henieken and the Pink Kush combination. Dutch Heineken is always brilliant, cold and crsip. The P.Kush was just immense. I kept smelling the little bag of it, and (not having a grinder) the smell it kicked out when tearing it to little bits for rolling was wonderful. Half way through making the joint, i was able to stick the rest of the bud to my finger and hang it there, it was so sticky. The taste on the exhale was stunning. From that first powerful joint, i knew i’d want more Kush. I was tempted to simply stick to that one batch it was so good. The indica /sativa mix was interesting too, because traditionally i have always had sativas in the morngin, and i have grown used to that sativa high first thing in Amsterdam mornings, but this deeper stone was new, and really really enjoyable. Next came a joint of the Mango haze. Perhaps it seemed worse because of the competition from the P.Kush, but this haze lost on all fronts. Look, Flavour, smell and high. The Mango was put back into the bag, and only reappeared later on when we were too smashed to care what we were smomking.

We decided now that we should head to our hotel on warmoestraat and check in, before we got too smashed. We were staying at the St. Christopher’s hotel, and first impression were fantastic, big decent looking bar area, good atmosphere nice liveliness to the place. The receptionist was a good guy and made us happier by mentioning the happy hour deals. 2 for 1 beers and 1 euro Jagermeisters, quality! Our rooms were not ready yet, so we paid up, took the receipt for our keys and headed back out. My mate wanted to try a Volcano vaporiser for the first time, so we headed south out of warmoestraat towards coffeeshop rusland where i had used them before. On arrival we ordered some coffees and asked about the volcano, unfortunately they no longer have a volcano, but we had the coffees already, so we took the opportunity to have another P.Kush joint and look at the glass bongs and pipes on display downstairs. Thank god all the pipes etc are so expensive because we could ended up buying some of them if we had the cash. Leaving Rusland we popped into Basjoes to see if they had a volcano, and i spoke to the amazingly friendly James, who pointed us towards blue bird.

Blue Bird was busy, so squeezed past the stoned people clogging up the top of the stairs. We ordered a couple of cokes and asked for the Volcano. Whilst waiting I browsed the menu and made a sudden decision that I would buy half gram of skunk at 5 Euros to use in the volcano. The logic being that 5 Euros was cheap and the skunk wouldn’t be over powering as I’ve found that volcanos have been really powerful before. This turned out to be a stupid idea, as it i had failed to realise that 5 Euros at half a gram, is actually 10 Euros a gram, which is expensive and the skunk we got was lacking in flavour and potency which meant the volcano didn’t give us its full potential. None the less my friends first experience with the vaporiser was a positive one and he was blown away by the amount of flavour you could get out of a bag.

With the rain still holding off, we headed back up to the northern corner of the red light district and decided on a nice brown bar, which was obviously a locals bar. I absolutely adore Pub culture, and i am convinced that Britain and Irelands rural (and urban) pubs are a uniquely important piece of our society. And armed with this appreciation for snug and quaint drinking dens i also love hollands brown bars. We had a couple of Heinekens and let our heads clear from the Volcano bag. We were starting to lag a bit, it was now approaching the afternoon and i had been up since 4am. So a couple of beers down, we wobbled over to our hotel again. We took advantage of the 2 for 1 beers and the discount on food (spicy chicken wings) and used the smoking area to finish off the P.Kush. Now we were well and truly finished for the day time session. We gathered all our stuff of the table, and headed to the room to get an hour or two siesta, in preparation for a monster evening session.

Opening the door we were greeted with an unexpected scene! All the walls were bright orange and covered in graffiti murals of what essentially was women with their chests exploding in a big powerful gush of blood.... nice. Mushrooms were defiantly off the cards for later then!!!

A couple of hours later, we had managed to drift off for a bit, and had half woken up again and had a shower, which completely revived me. We were ready for the evening. It was about 6pm now. It was getting dark and the weather was just holding out. Grey clouds and it was spitting a bit, but nowhere bad enough to dampen our enthusiasm for the coming few hours.

First stop was all the way up warmoestraat, out at the top, and turn right past coffeeshop central and onto Voyagers. I was really looking forward to getting to voyagers. On paper its got one of the best looking menus, and on the previous trip we tried the butter from here which was mental. I hope they do something with the interior here because its not the best place to sit and smoke, its a ‘by and fly’ place. If they made it into a decent place to chill as well, this would be by far the best shop in town. To my horror though, I saw that the butter was sold out! The bud tender (Mr. Highly Blessed) however reassured me that coffeeshop Bagheera would have the Butter, as the two coffeeshops are connected. So with my mind at ease, we turned to look at the rest of the menu. The words ‘Purple Strawberry Bliss’ just lept out at me. That’s my kind of name for a plant. The genetics were Strawberry x blueberry x purple kush’. I was pretty much sold before i saw it. And oh my god. And i mean OH MY GOD. The buds were popcorn like, purple and green and absolutely covered in crystals. Like it had been frosted with sugar. The smell was divine. Next on the menu we looked at the Headband (sour x kush). with genetics like that you can’t go wrong on the flavour front. The initial smell was of cut grass, which transformed into a sweet sickly smell. The buds were dense and green. We were defiantly getting some of that too. Sensing our enthusiasm for flavours and smells, Highly Blessed stuck a jar of Vanilla Kush under our noses. “GIVE ME SOME OF THAT!!!” what a beautiful sweet smell. One of the most captivating smelling weeds I’ve ever known. The buds were perfect as well, we had to get some. We also had to get out of there before we bought the whole menu. And we still had to grab some of the butter from bagheera and find time to smoke the mango haze from earlier.

So we braved the now blustery and wet streets down to bagheera, where we were again disappointed to find out there was no butter. Perhaps it was our sweet innocent faces or perhaps it was our stubborn re-questioning “are you SURE you don’t have any?.... really?.... really really?”, but the bud tender phoned her boss and put in an order for some butter to be delivered later that evening. So with the butter arriving later and all our voyagers purchases, we headed to Nes Café for some beers and some beautiful Kush based smokes. Nes was a brilliant place, music was a bit too rock for me, but a great atmosphere and amazing beer. Gulpner is delicious and we tried the one with a gnome as the logo which was too sweet for me, but nice to try. We got chatting with some Australian expats and had a decent hour or so in Nes. The Purple Strawb Bliss was an astonishing smoke, and the Vanilla Kush was the tastiest exhale possible. What a great time that was. We also learnt that bottles of Grolsch (the pop tops) were 3 Euros each. What a baragain. We were in danger of staying in Nes the entire night so we forced ourselves to carry on and we headed up to 420 (de Kuil).

At 420 we setup on a table down the steps at the back of the shop, next to some guy who put about 2 grams into a giant L-plate for himself. Next for us was the Headband. Again amazing. We couldn’t fault any of the purchases from voyagers. Things start to really get fuzzy from here on out though. the amount of drinking and smoking really started to build up. I can’t really remember how long we were in 420, but afterwards we defiantly headed back towards Dam square and found another brown bar. We obviously had some beers there, but which ones, i don’t know. By Now we were hungry and so after much deliberation, we decided on steak. I have refused to have a steak anywhere in the world since we were in Argentina early last year. The steak in Argentina is so good, that it is absolutely pointless having it in England. But my friend was convinced that you got an amazing steak in the Dam, so we decided to try it. And oh yes was he right. Not quite Argentina, but as close as you could get. Fucking brilliant. All of the steaks on the menu were by weight, in grammes, which we are not used too, so we had no idea how big 300, 400 or 500 grammes was. 500 grammes was the biggest option, and was pretty expensive but we were mashed enough to say ‘fuck it’ and we ordered 900grammes of steak between us!!!!!! Only when they came to the table did we realise that’s almost 2lbs of meat!!. Instinctively i also ordered half a litre of red wine (as if we weren’t getting drunk enough) to go with the steak, and my mate slipped onion rings and chips into the order too. What a fucking feast. The munchies made light work of these huge lumps of soft meat and to our surprise the munchies hadn’t finished when we had finished out plates. Directly next to the restaurant was a bakery so we grabbed some desert in the form of olliebollen and apple turnovers!!

one of the steaks (500g) before...
and the steak, after...

Time was getting later and we headed back to bagheera to get the butter. As promised it had arrived, but it wasn’t the same butter as we had in voyagers in December, but something called CheesyButter, it was distinctly more yellow in colour. I was so excited to pick this up. It was amazingly soft and malleable and if anything a little more powdery than the green butter of December. We didn’t stick around in bagheera as it was empty and we needed noise and people to keep us going. So we headed back into the Red Light District in search of smoke friendly bars. Memory wise, things really go fuzzy now. I know we went into a few bars and smoked and drunk quite a lot.

CheesyButter from Bahgeera

We ended up in the stunning heffer pub for sure, and i had a kriek and a pilsner, and then we defiantly went to the grasshopper bar. They have given up enforcing the smoking area there now, so you can smoke all over the building again. i initially wouldn’t have chosen the grasshopper but my friend really likes it, and to be honest we had a really fun time.

It was in the Grasshopper that over a few more Heinekens we skinned up 3 heavy joints out of the kush and the Mango Haze. And one joint of the all important CheesyButter. The amount of smoke that the Butter kicks out is amazing, (at least it was amazing to us at the time, as according to my camera i took about 10 photos of the smoke in the air?!?!) My mate was blown apart by the Butter. And so was I. It’s mental the power of that stuff. That butter, and the spliffs (plus the whole evenings consumption) sent us from wasted to absolutely obliterated.

We decided that we couldn’t go on any longer... we have to crash out. So we stepped out of the grasshopper and went directly into a kebab shop next door! Unbelievably, despite our steak dinners, we found ourselves on ‘auto pilot’ eating a shoarma kebab!... followed by waffles covered in icing. Those impromptu munchies gave us another boost of energy and we decided we could keep going for one more and we ended up getting another beer somewhere. Now we were sure had to pass out, so we started walking back to the hotel. The air seemed to temporarily clear our head so we went for ANOTHER beer and smoke in Stones. Soon we were back to feeling that we must surely now pass out. Conversation was incoherent and maintaining any train of thought was impossible. So we left, and stumbled back to our hotel. The problem was that you have to pass the bar to get to the reception, and the 20 meter walk we had just done seemed to grant us just enough sobriety to be able to order two more beers. So impossibly, we found ourselves sitting in a busy smoking area in the hotel bar, with two more beers in front of us, and the last of our weed rolled up and smoking away. I couldn’t tell you how long we lasted or any other details, but next morning when i woke up in our room, i was half dressed and fucking hung over.

8am the alarm went off...... 8 FUCKING AM. We had now idea what time we actually went to bed, could’ve been 2 am, could’ve been 3 am, could’ve been 11pm ha ha. I managed to swing myself out of bed and shuffled down stairs to look at the dry bread and ham and cheese slices.... euuuuugh no thank you. I basically sat there like a zombie for half an hour on my own until my mate turned up. He suggested that perfect of remedies on days like this. Spliff and beer. So we crab walked out into warmoestraat in search for a bar that was open. I was in my t-shirt and was so hungover I couldn’t feel the cold!

Bizzarley (or maybe not) we could find anywhere open until 9am. So we decided a spliff first and wait till beer o’clock. We had finished all our weed last night, so we popped into Baba and got the Amnesia Haze. The logic being an sativa would be better surely in the state we were. WRONG. The amnesia haze was magnificent, a great example. But it was too good. The sativa high was completely bewildering. We thought that decision making was bad when we woke up, it was now impossible. This one big joint took me back to midnight last night, and i was a fucking useless. Proper head lying on the table time. Maybe a decent indica would’ve calmed and soothed me. But then maybe not smoking and having a cup of water would have actually been the best idea ha ha. We were both hanging so much now, that we couldn’t face a beer. So we decided to head up to the airport early and have beers there, when we felt more up for it. I stocked up on Stroopwaffles for home, and we boarded to train out of town. My friend had a the last of the Amnesia Haze outside the airport and i declined to have even one toke, i was that bad. A few Heinekens started to sooth me, and some bittebollen and chips sorted me right out. easy flight home. And i ended up sitting back home by late afternoon, sitting in a daze on the sofa, thinking..... "what a fucking day that was" :D  :D

cheers.
