Thanks guys, from my experience i have never had a good coffee from a coffeeshop! Katsu was on my list of shops this trip so i move it up the list and make sure im there for a morning coffee. I don't think i could bring myself to go in a bulldog but it is nice to know they are good at one thing!

I dont drink loads of coffee but the difference between a nice coffee and just a coffee is HUGE.

all the coffee i had during my trip was a very poor attempt. amnesia had the best tasting for what it was, but nothing special. i am just as snobby about my coffee as i am about my cannabis (as ive been a barista for 9+ years)

i heard a Stumptown cafe just opened in amsterdam recently this summer. they are a nice roasting company based out of portland and brooklyn and do a very good job on sourcing and roasting their product. here is their address in the dam

Stumptown Coffee
Bernard Zweerskade 23-3

here is a few recent pics of my beverages
all by hand, no instruments other than pouring

Paradox have the hottest cup of coffee and I quite like Homegrown Fantasy's coffee as well.

Paradox coffee is very good, also Solo have great coffee, nice and strong. Gives you a good kick in the teeth early in the morning.

Agreed. Paradox coffee is really good. Also one of my fave shops. Really nice local feel and the BT when i was last there in August (the older chap) was beyond the nicest i have ever met in a shop. Happy to chat about his wares and really interested in London life. Full of local dutch but he spent a fair while talking with us.

Tertulia also serve really good coffee and is a nice chilled out place. As much as i hate to say it; Dampkring do a nice espresso too.

Have fun

Having said all that and looking at your pics, i'd push em all aside and ask to do it yourself. They look amazing.

I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment, although on the whole Dutch coffeeshops / bars / cafe's tend to be above par with other countries in that they usually have a good commercial grinder and espresso machine - just coupled with stale mass produced beans and staff who don't know what they are doing.

If you are serious about good coffee try and find a cafe that uses Boot Koffie (aka The Golden Coffee Box) beans (you could probably email them and ask who uses them), they are a Dutch speciality coffee roaster who roast fresh regularly and have a good variety of single origins to choose from.

I agree, I've never had a truly good coffee in a coffeeshop. Hopefully this doesn't sound arrogant, but its a country-wide problem, not just a coffeeshop thing. The majority (not all) of Dutch coffee is just bitter and woody tasting, with none of the sweetness, aromas, oils etc, that you only get with freshly ground, quality beans. There isn't much demand for it in Holland, most people are happy to drink whatever, as long as it contains caffeine. If I have to add sugar to make it palatable, theres something wrong.

Saying that, I've found a handful of places in Amsterdam that do recognize good quality coffee, and I've noticed a few new places that look interesting, so there is hope. One of them was Stumptown, as you suggested, but sadly the Amsterdam branch was just an experiment, and was only open for a few months. I was there many times and got talking to them. The baristas were actual Stumptown employees that were flown over from the States, and given the chance to live in Ams for a few months, like a working holiday. I was also told that Amsterdam is still a trading point for African beans, but they do their roasting in the States, and its a little unsustainable to fly the beans back and forth every week.

Anyway, heres my suggestions -

Screaming Beans - http://www.screamingbeans.nl/ - Hartenstraat 12
De Koffie Salon - http://www.dekoffiesalon.nl/ - Utrechtsestraat 130, or 1e C. Huygensstraat 82
Brandmeesters - http://www.brandmeesters.nl/ - Van Baerlestraat 13
Small World - http://www.smallworldcatering.nl/ - Binnenoranjestraat 14

Thanks for the replies, some good suggestions, in ten trips to dam i have never had a good coffee in a coffeeshop, thats why this time i thought id ask here. A coffeeshop that prided itself on good coffee as well as weed would be a very popular shop I would have thought.

I second this place. Visited several times a day when we were staying at the horrible Hotel De Stern down the street
