Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
Hi, I'm new so please forgive me if the answers to this are already on here somewhere, Ive dug around and can't seem to find much info anywhere. Has anyone got any suggestions of cheap places to drink, I've seen on other forums people saying its €10 for a pint, can anyone recommend good cheap places, the only place I know so far is the flying pig hostel bar as it does 2 for 1 drinks.
Also I can find absolutley no info on prices of normal drinks in coffee shops, got people I know telling me its €5 for a hot chocolate.
Would really, really appreciate any help as Im going on the 28th and its my first time there.
Thanks!

Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
In the coffeeshopy you will be paying anything between €1.75-€4 for a coffee\juice. But in most coffeeshops you'd probably not pay more than €3 from what I've read and recall.
But beer prices, now thats a different story. Ricks bar (next to there cs) do happy hour prices of pump beer for €2.50 a pint and next door to that Suzies Sallon does happy hour just after Ricks where a pint there being €3 I think during the happy hour period. To memory Ricks do the happy hour during the afternoon and again in the evening. Think Suzies only does it later at night (10-11pm?). Suzies has a smoking room inside and I think or assume you can smoke in Ricks bar?.
There is a locals bar (well a brown bar I think) here http://www.indewildeman.nl/indexe.html (link posted by Boner in another thread) where they sell every beer you could want and many aint a bad price at all if you check out there menu. There is also NES cafe a 2 min walk from Ricks where you can smoke your joint at the front. Not much info on there beer prices but think I recall a mention of bottled beers for the €3 mark?. I'd imagine a pint of the local beer to be under €5 in NES but cant recall any member confirming the pint prices?. A lot of members on here love NES so you have 3 cheap places within 2 mins walk.
Also if you are on more of a budget or prefer a few drinks in your room before going out you can nip in the local Albert H supermarket (several about central Amsterdam just look on google maps). Here is a link to the beer section on there website: http://webwinkel.ah.nl/process?fh_locat ... ules.build
I know there are others but I cant recall at the moment. Preblem is unless you know the area or other members post the info you will struggle to find any bars doing beer at less than €4-6 a bottle\pint

Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
^ agree with what Dave said
Susies and Nes are less than 5E per half ltr which is about standard price for the majority of town IME and considering they are both smoker friendly and bang in the centre makes them excellent places for a beer with your smoke. Besides the price of beer is only as horrific as it is cos the exchange rates on its arse. In the real (before the bankers screwed us all over) world the exchange rate was nearer 1.5E : £1, so a 5E beer was actually 3 and a bit quid.

Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
Everyones hero "basjoe" is by far the most expensive for drinks,2.50 for a looza? wtf.
Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
I recall a charge of €3 in 1 coffeeshop for a coffee 2 years ago, just cant recall which. Hill Street Blues on Warmoestraat probably do the cheapest drinks. I recall the Looza juice being €1.85 on my last trip and I think the coffee was about the same price.Kingdoc wrote:Everyones hero "basjoe" is by far the most expensive for drinks,2.50 for a looza? wtf.
Also on the beer front found another cheap bar (from the free drink point of view),(but dont think you can smoke yer gear in there?), on Warmoestraat is the Irish bar Sláìnte. They advertise on there website that between sunday evening and friday afternoon that they have happy hour on pints of Heineken between 3-4pm & 7-8pm. It's buy 1 and get 1 free. As I recall for previous trips it's about €5 (might be more like €6 now?) per pint and you get a receipt and take that to the bar for a free refill. But you must get your free refill before the hour is up if I recall correctly from an annoyed mate lol.

Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
I don't drink booze that often, so can't help much on that, but coffeeshop drink prices vary enormously. 2 drinks (a milkshake and a coke) cost me about €8+ in Barneys in June - it disgusts me
- but there are cheaper places, such as paradox 1.60 - 1.80 for juice/tea/coffee, and around €3.50 for their seriously good milkshakes. La Tertula is also a cheapy place for drinks. Basically any where out of the centre is gonna be a little cheaper providing its not a commercial chain (i.e. Greenhouse)
If you want beer, my advice is to stay away from the very centre and the red light - you'll pay daft money there - and honestly the places are shit, the beer is shit, the people collectively shocking. Get yourself out a little bit and into one of the amazing brown cafes in the city. The beer there is far better, the atmosphere decidedly more dutch, and everyone very friendly and welcoming. They get pretty lively at night, and a great place to hang out.
Some fine examples:
Cafe Onder De Ooievaar (Utrechtsestraat 119)

Cafe Chris (Bloemstraat 42)
http://www.cafechris.nl/index_uk.php?id=home
Cafe Marcella (Amstelveld 21)
Cafe Slijterij Oosterling (Utrechtsestraat 140)
Cafe De Eland (Prinsengracht 296)

Cafe Pieper (Prinsengracht 424)

Seriously all these are close to centre but worlds apart from damrak and red light and bonus is, beer is cheaper and better quality/selection too.
Enjoy

Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
Hmmm
I was actually talking about the tourist/British style bars that attract the wrong type of stag do's and shady goings on in the red light and immediate area that charge these stupid prices for booze. To make myself clear guys, I know that's not the style of nes or any other self respecting establishment in this area, of course I do, it's just of the ones that feed on the tourist dollar the way lions feed on a gazelle.
I was merely advising to stay away from such establishment if you don't wanna pay through the nose for a pint of warm Stella.
Being someone who rents a holiday apartment on the periphery of the outer canal belt and who lived for 18 months in the jordaan, thus spending most social time in those areas - these are my alternatives based on my knowledge
hope that's clear guys and gals

Re: Bar and Coffee shop drinks prices
If you want value you need to get out the centrum. prices are 10-30% higher in the centrum I would say. But for beers that are a number of happy hour bars in the centrum. You can work out a pub crawl from 3 to 11pm going around happy hours.
But really some of the prices are just to high and customers should just not pay them, that is the only way to make them lower there prices. 5 Euros for a coffee is a joke (@1.18) that is £4.24. If someone tried to charge me that in London I would walk out. A better exchange rage would be good.

Talking to a mate of mine last night and he was saying he went on his brothers stag do in Amsterdam last September and they were paying €8.50 for a bottle of Magners in the RLD - that's plain wrong - but if people are paying it....

Yep, same here, but everyones different eh. Some people like a beer with their joint, some don't. Some people go on stag do's just to get lashed and visit the red light. It's just how it is.dpgsoulja89 wrote:I dont get the point in going to amsterdam..just to buy beer
