I have traded e-mails with Boaty, who are being very accommodating by offering various option for booking, and they are holding five boats in my name until April 6th. at no charge. I'll be there, and very buzzzed  , by then and will meet with them at the jetty to finalize the number of boats and will have to pay up front or at least a deposit at that time. As to the cost, I have been playing with the numbers of boats/people/fees and, in most cases, it still works out to be around 20e pp... :D

The 'crew' list continues to grow....welcome aboard Uncle Ron.

Thanks for getting in contact with them. Though dont think we should do more than 5 in each and cant see the point in less than 4 in each boat unless thats just to fit the last few in. I guess it would pay for a few of us to go down and see before hand to check out how big they look by sight rather than the stated size. That way we would have a far better idea on the suitability of bodies per boat.

With the best of intents & like the cs t&t's, how sure are we all going to be to make sure we get there to book the required boats?. What I mean is that if 5 boats are booked and deposits payed (however that will work before we even get there etc). What will then happen if only half the people turn up?. Would that mean that say 10 of us will be expected to pay the remaining cost for 5 boats between us?.

Trad, since your in advanced stages of booking with them is there any chance you can enquire on the situation if only half the people actually turn up on the day what there policy will be if they hold 5 boats for us?. Or will it be a case of unless payment is received the morning of or day before then no boats will held for our group thats not already been payed for?.

They are holding 5 boats, at no charge, for us until my visit (for the inspection tour) on April 5th or 6th.
In order to secure the reservation they will require full payment. I hope to convince them to accept a 50% deposit, which I would be willing to put on a credit card, with the remainder paid in cash on the 21st. Five boats will cost 435e, by my calculations, and that is a bit much for me to wager on 20 odd stoners making a dead line... :? 8)

Thanks for adding me to the list of merry boaters. Also, thanks for all your efforts, much appreciated.

I concur with the bit about risking the deposit. I assume that this will be a main topic of discussion on the 5th or 6th, yes?!
My two cents worth - I recommend a deadline of the 4th of April (or the day before the meeting) to sign up. When you meet with the boat people (no pun intended), you will know how many people are committed, which will equate to the number of boats required, approximate cost, etc...

Personal opinion - if the boat company wants a non-refundable deposit equal to half or more, walk away, I would. As you stated, "...a bit much for me to wager on 20 odd stoners making a dead line..."

Something to think about - discussions during the festivities to consider sponsors for future 4/20 events. Seed of thought planted. :)

Just noticed this thread. I have quite a bit of experience traversing the Amsterdamse grachten.
Be careful out there if you are planning on captaining these vessels yourselves, it can get quite hairy out there at times. Those big tour boats take no prisoners... but the politie might!!

Here's some documents I have scanned for the potential captain's to read and inwardly digest!

Have fun, but don't get too mashed.. and keep the weed smoking discreet or you WILL end up with hassle from the waterpolitie :!:

I think it goes without saying that smoking in a boat should be treated the same way as you might while walking the street. In that if we are carefull and dont draw attention to ourselfs then we should be ok. Another issue with reguards to the deposit is the weather. What happens if it's raining on the day?. Does that mean any monies payed are returned or are we still expected to take the boats out untill the point of heavy rain?.

I was thinking along the same lines OsO  sorry but there is no way im going in a wee dodgy flimsy boat that we pilot ourselves no thanks count me out  Usually the idea of a boat trip is leisurly i really cant see how that will be the case !? no one knows the rules of the water , as was mentioned the big boats dont give a dam .

I would be much more relaxed about it if it was the ST nichs boat club (why was that ruled out again? are they not just shut for the winter?)

Have a good one y`all that decide to go i will be waiting with a towel a spliff and a hot drink

It's not exacally ruled out. Just that you cant book or even know untill the last minute if they are running. Plus I recall reading the ride is only about an hour or so long anway?. To be honest there is always that choice of who want to do what. 1 (weather permitting) can be booked and we know where we stand from day 1. The other you wont know if they are running untill you turn up reguardless of weather. Both has pros and cons and I dont matter to much which.

The biggest issue is the weather, if it's windy and raining...yer fukt. As for the boats themselves, they're good pieces of kit and can take 6 no problem, plus they come with life jackets. The boaty map has 'no go' areas for a reason and I'd say aslong as ya keep off the main Amstel canal aswell there shouldn't be any issues. If it was such a hard thing to do, boaty would be out of business....Forward, reverse, left and right ....how hard does that sound. As for boats sinking....Titanic?....doesn't matter what size they are if it's gonna sink, it's gonna sink and should something like that actually happen...which is bullshit, if ya can't manage to swim 15-20 feet with a life jacket on, then I suggest you shouldn't go on a boat .....ever!. But, ya should get down to yer local swimming pool asap.
