questions from Dam virgin...

Post by bbdug »

have booked flights for the girlfriend and me to spend 4 days in the Dam
we are both daily grass/hash smokers and ashamed to say Dam virgins
as we are both quickly approaching 40 its time to tick this off the list :D
a few probably silly questions....
1. what are the opening times of most coffee shops?
2. do you take in your own tobacco and papers(god i feel stupid having to ask)lol
3. can anyone recommend a good guide book for the travelling smoker
4. when so many hotels dont allow smoking, where do you smoke what you buy?
5. are most of them nice inside? remember our age, too old for slumming it
6. fun things to do during the day when stoned????
7. when e's were e's use to love them, any similar smart drugs?
8. should we try the mushees?
All trip gratefully received
Thanks

Hey bbdug.

Congrats on finally booking a trip!
Just to let you know there are loads of 'first timer' threads on here. If you have a quick go on the search function on here you will find plenty of useful information for the first timer.

Firstly I would like to recommend this:

http://www.postwar.nl/amsterdam/

It was recommended to me by this website a year ago before my first trip and found it great pre-dam reading!

1.Coffeeshops are generally open from around 10am-midnight. There are many exceptions, some open earlier (around 8am), and some later (Grey Area doesnt open unitl midday). You will also find some places close later than other.
2. Tobacco is not allowed, by law in coffeeshops. Most places will let you add a sprinkle into your joint (I like to ask the budtender politely just to be sure). A lot of places have a tobacco substitute on offer (I would advise against this!). Almost all coffeeshops have papers and roach on offer at the counter, just dont take the p**s! I like to take my own papers over anyway!
3. http://www.amazon.com/Get-Lost-Cool-Gui ... 9080256102 - this was recommended to me last week by this website, had a quick look at it and ended up ordering it (even though I've bene around 5 times now). It is packed with tons of information on restaurants (from snack bars to proper restaurants), coffeeshops, RLD everything!. Would highly recommend a read!
4. A lot of hotels dont allow smoking, however in my experience, they tend to turn a blind eye. You can officialy smoke your purchases in any coffeeshop (dont be scared of taking weed from one shop into another, so long as you buy a drink etc, you should be fine. There are also quite a few smoker-friendly bars, such as Nes, Hunters Bar etc (all listed in this sites fantastic directory) which tend te be open later than coffeeshops and will allow you an alcoholic drink to accompany your weed.
5. I assume youa re talking about coffeeshops? In short....No :( I find that most coffeeshops are not the most comfortable of places, and a lot tend to not be the cleanest of places. I actually found a place called New Times (its in the directory) that was REALLY clean last month, was very impressed.
6. This is a very subjective one. In the summer me and three friends rented a self-operated boat (http://www.rentaboatamsterdam.com/) and took our own tour of the canals. This was great fun, we had plenty of product to keep us going, took a picnic and set off (I would not recommend this out of Summer). Walk around (or rent a bike), Amsterdam is a stunning city with its architecture and canals. I have spent many an hour aimlessly walking around off my head. Vondelpark is a lovely place to have a walk around. Museums. Markets (Albert Cuyp).
7. Unfortunately this sort of stuff does not interest me in the slightest, however this MAY be of some use if you are willing to trawl throught the posts.
8. Again, not my speciality. I have friends who have tried them and say they are amazing. Just not for me.

Hope that was helpful!

Good answer that - you won't need many more

I'll just reiterate what was said about the guidebook, the cool guide is an exceptional book written by someone that loves Amsterdam as much as us lot, not some suit from Lonely Planet.

I didnt have this book for my 1st trip, but I did for my 2nd, and the trip was a million times better as a result. I still read it now

ALSO - the smokers guide to Amsterdam is very, very useful, the copy I have though is quite out of date so hopefully they have updated it now with new info and new strains. Mine still hails Northern Lights as a current, popular strain in all coffeeshops :?

I agree with plenty of the info already given above, how not to get hit by a bike is, as stated above, a brilliant read and sets the scene nicely.

In the past i've found that making my own google map not only is useful but also a good way to get in the mood. (Sometimes someone will have left theirs for the world to see such as this one http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?client=fi ... =en&tab=wl . I think that the author posts here?)

With regard to the tobacco thing, offically its illegal but as long as you're discrete no-one seems much to care. By discrete i mean keep it off the table, don't smoke roll-ups etc. If in doubt the old saying 'when in rome do as the romans do' has always served me well.

I tried the mushrooms back when they were still legal, they were great. Visiting Artis zoo whilst on said mushrooms was also quite funny. Artis zoo is really really grim imo, especially if you're used to British zoos. It feels really delapidated and the animals look very sad. Mushrooms are now illegal in Holland although can still be obtained. See the 'smartshops and mushrooms' boards for more info. I've tried a few smart drugs in the UK, mostly crap, not sure what the ones in Dam are like though.

Have you booked accomodation? if not search the hotels section of this board for lists of smoking hotels. Alternatively many appartments allow smoking and aren't as pricey as you might think.

city mundo
amsterdam stay
smokers cribs

are worth a look. Other than that i'd say pick out some tourist attractions to do but don't worry if they fall by the wayside, this is perfectly normal (at least in my case  !).

a few probably silly questions....
1. what are the opening times of most coffee shops?
The latest they can close is 1am. Opening times vary. The earliest I've seen are 7am.
2. do you take in your own tobacco and papers(god i feel stupid having to ask)lol
Papers and roaches are normally there for the taking. Probably best having some of your own anyway though! Tobacco is banned, but lots of coffeeshop's turn a blind eye.
3. can anyone recommend a good guide book for the travelling smoker
Online is probably best!
4. when so many hotels dont allow smoking, where do you smoke what you buy?
In coffeeshops or discreetly, just about anywhere :-D
5. are most of them nice inside? remember our age, too old for slumming it
They come in all shapes / sizes / decors. Once you know where you are staying in the city, I could probably recommend something..
6. fun things to do during the day when stoned????
Hire a bike! Visit a market, see out-of-the-centre coffeeshops, visit a gallery / museum.
7. when e's were e's use to love them, any similar smart drugs?
Not that I'm aware of.. I wouldn't advise buying E of some random dealer in the RLD either!!
8. should we try the mushees?
Truffles can be fun. They have the same drug in them as mushies.. When I've tried them they have been no-where near as intense as LSD.. Whether you should try them is your call!

Good shout about the google maps, I use them all the time. I have the google maps app on my nokia n97 so I can access the maps any time I am abroad. This is one that I done (dunno if it's the one you linked to...)

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?client ... 8&t=h&z=14

I have 1 or 2 still to add to it (Club Media and Funky Monkey spring to mind) :)
