im gonna have mine locked away in a safe, im gonna get a colour copy of it laminated and take my drivers license
Good call, I like your idea about color copy and keep original in safe. I was under the impression that you had to carry your passport on you at all times. Thanks, AzLaker 8)

When I was last in town my girlfriend (23) got ID'd in De Kuil before we'd even ordered a drink. She didn't have any with her so we were asked to leave which we did, having both worked in bars in the UK we fully understand the need for IDing people and know its our own fault for not carrying passports. In my 5 years working in bars I must of ID'd hundreds of people, most of whom were over 18 and quite offended but its an important part of the job.

Does anyone know what the punishment is in the Netherlands for serving alcohol and cannabis to under 18s?

In the UK it is upto £1,000 fine to the individual serving the alcohol and upto £20,000 to the premesis so its completely understandable why bars have to be so careful, especially with all the sting operations currently in place in major cities!!

Going to Amsterdam soon and was reading this post
I appreciate all the tips on this forum but this one has some bad info.

If you are from the US, at least, and probably other places you are required effective 1/1/2005 by the Netherlands identification law to carry a valid passport or valid residence permit at all times. Not sure of exact law but it seems failure to have valid identification can result in 50 euro min to 2000 euro max fine and up to 2 months jail. A photocopy of your passport or a US drivers license may allow you to visit a coffeeshop but it is no longer acceptable ID for visiting the Netherlands.

Its to do with ID cards, europian countries work on the ID card system intead of passports now so its easy to carry the cards in your wallet at all times, what lakshmi says is correct but its not only for americans, its everyone, by law you are reguired to carry ID at all times now.
hope this helps but im pretty sure that there was a post on this this a couple of years back.
peace everyone
