I feel A LOTmore safe in the RLD than I do just about anywhere in my hometown of New York.

I've done a lot of wandering around Amsterdam on my own, late at night too, including RLD. Never felt unsafe. Whispers on the street offering drugs (which happened a few times) are easily ignored.

Just backing up what others are saying. In comparison to cities in the UK and US then Amsterdam is extremely safe. Violent crime against the public is relatively low and there aren't any real no-go areas.
As for street hustlers, compared to the situation in the 1990s, the Red Light District has been mostly cleared of them. It use to be a real hassle walking around the RLD, you were literally approached every few feet by the "psst, psst xtc, coke" guys. But due to the area being cleaned up a bit and an increase in Police presence they have been drastically reduced in number. They are still there but you're unlikely to be hassled by them.
So, relax and don't worry about it, you're 99.9% sure to have safe and hassle free trip.

A little common sense and paying attention to your surroundings are the keys to remaining safe in any city. Amsterdam is no different...

You've got nothing to worry about. The Red Light District is the most heavily patrolled neighborhood in the city- women might face catcalls, but nothing more than that(just don't take any pictures.) There are some places that can get sketchy at night or so I've heard(around Westerpark, parts of the North, etc.) but that's pretty far away from the touristy areas.

Was there last weekend and bumbled round the RLD each night, even at 11pm and wasted I felt alot safer than I do in Peterborough on a night out. Tbh didn't notice any of the street dealers on this visit.
Relax and enjoy and if for any reason you don't feel safe I'm sure there will be a coffeeshop near to your hotel for a late night session.

By reading all these posts on here and how many times most of the guys on here have travelled to the dam should speak for itself.None of us we keep travelling back over and over again. As someone mentioned earlier the RL has been cleaned right up,and there are lots of plain clothed policemen around keeping an eye on things.Just have a good time and chill out, enjoy the buzz of the city for what it is because there is knowhere else quite like it
