cant find a coffeeshop, anyone know it?

Post by chillers2 »

many years ago on our first trip to dam we stayed in victoriaplein, cos the hotel looked sooo funky, HOTEL V, (unbeknown to us it was miles away from anywhere)
we asked the receptionist of hotel where the nearest coffeeshop was, after looking at us in disgust she pointed us in the direction of the main road, and said just keep walking long way and you will come to them all...
after what seemed miles and miles and miles we smelt it OUR FIRST EVER COFFEESHOP hmmmm the smell was wonderful after not smoking all day !!
we went in ordered drinks and a bag and sat down with a cheesy big grin on our faces, my friend put her feet up and she was told off, ok fair enough but we were sooooooo knackered,

all i remember about it it was a small shop, on the main road (i am trying to use the google man now to walk where we think we did and cannot find the shop but i think we are on the right road ( RIJNSTRAAT)), it had an open hatch where he was serving to the street, he was a little old black man, run down shop, very local type people, not friendly, comfy or touristy at all, so not wanting to go back i just want to know where it is and what its called,

i would be grateful if anyone can shed any light on this shop???

thank you in advance !

let preface this with the admission I am probably the last person you want to rely on for directions in Amsterdam. I very easily get turned around in Amsterdam. I think that being accustomed to a square grid city like NY screws up my sense of direction, though the premium cannabis surely is a factor.

Anyway, if I google map the street you mention, it requires you turn right outside your hotel, walking AWAY from the Centraal District. If thats I case, I haven't spent much time in that direction.

I hope other forum members can help you identify this lost shop, I definitely know the feeling.

This is a pet hate of mine. Why do people even think of doing it? Lack of respect for others.

As for the CS, jumbled up sense of direction is normal. You could try Google Street Maps, I reckon you'd find it.

Rijnstraat becomes van Woustraat once you cross Amstelkade heading towards the city centre. There are three coffeeshops on van Woustraat called Blue Sea, de Keeper and Warda 1. Could it be one of those?

The shop in question would be 'De Keeper'.

Cheers!

I think I went there once, many moons ago. Couldn't tell you anything about the place.

The folk at your hotel obviously were clueless as I believe there are two coffee shops closer to Hotel V. GoedGoed is just along the street on the corner of Churchilllaan and Schipbeekstraat and then you have TopWeazle which is just across the traffic lights going the opposite direction.

My pleasure. Glad to have helped in a small way. :D
After reading your question, I noticed that Rijnstraat didn't have any coffeeshops then I had a look on google maps, bearing in mind that Amsterdam's streets often turn into a differently named street, then checked the database on the main site again after seeing Rijnstraat become van Woustraat.
