I think it's different for everybody (not to get off topic). I am about to embark on a 2 month backpacking solo trip of Europe and after my first backpack trip 3 years ago when I was 17 I certainly learned that in the end it pays off to pack light. I overpacked my first trip and it turned out to be a serious burden. This trip I will be taking a normal sized North Face backpack with two pairs of boxers, 3 pairs of socks, 2 shirts, 2 pants, 2 shorts, laptop, digi camera and my hygienal things. Definitely would pack heavier though if it was just a week stay in Amsterdam but if your lugging your shit around all the time it really does make things a shit ton easier with just a backpack.

I am never thrilled with having to change accommodations, as I stated, a bit of an annoyance. I would just as soon plunk my stuff in one place, get comfy and cozy, and not worry about packing up my few things every couple of days.

My situation in September was unique: I had reservations at a B&B for two nights. My plans changed but unfortunately the B&B was booked. I used a hotel voucher for two free nights (which I had intended on using another time), and again, only two consecutive nights available. This is how things snowballed for me, although being in Amsterdam made it more bearable.

As for backpacking, whatever shakes your tree. With 24 years worth of Army experiences, I think I've backpacked enough for several lifetimes, or have I? Nah, bring it baby!

When traveling 5,000 miles from home for up to two weeks, it's almost impossible to travel with just a backpack. Not to mention I've had a partial knee replacement and carrying the weight around is not good for me. I did do it in 2003 when I was backpacking but that is far from my style now. So does that make me a fag BTW, if you can afford Gucci luggage I would hope someone else is pulling your bag

BTW, Often when I'm in Amsterdam I have to go to Paris for a few days and return to the city to fly back out. I'm usually in an Apartment for the first part then a Hotel for the three or so nights when I get back. I've done the Zee and it was a mid level hassle (not something I'd do without lots of free time) But I'm used to being slightly nomadic so it's no problem.

well..if you go backpaking you spend 30-40euro a night on hotels or hostels? you must be rich! i do and im sure where iv ben in holland you never been seen more stuff then 1/2 of the stoner on here! iv biked 1/2 the country iv been mud walking in the north sea and other sea witch 3/4 of the ppl on here couldnt eeven find or get the energy or event get up at 4am bike 20km to get to the mud! Since you can't read, that about 8,000 km from my house to Amsterdam. I don't change multiple times a day, but I refuse to look like a fucking bum. When I travel it's with my duffel bag and backpack. You don't know me and I don't know you. If you want to make that a reality, I'll be living in Amsterdam starting in November. PM me and we can have a T&T.

If you dont mind me asking, how did your move come about? I am really thinking seriously about doing it. It would be easier for me though being British, but I would love to hear your story nevertheless.
