Takin' in the Great (?) Outdoors

When in Amsterdam, it only makes sense to stick to weed grown indoors, right? I mean, the Dutch don't have the growing season for longer-flowering strains, and all the imported stuff is the brick you find at home. So fuck it. Why bother with the outdoors?
On this trip I decided to disregard common wisdom. I tried as many outdoor varieties as could. I did smoke some indoor herb as well, but strictly to set a benchmark by which to judge the real subject of my research, of course. (Like, yeah.)
As I did in my last travelogue, I'll be posting my reports strain-by-strain, in the order in which I tried them. I want to mention here that a few of the varieties I tried in the beginning of the trip were rather … 'bleh,' so if you're turned off by the thread early on, please check back later :)

strain: Thai
cs: De Graal
€: 10/~2gr
odor: cocoa, along with the ammonia smell of tobacco
I went to Mellow Yellow for the S5 OD. They were out of it. I came to De Graal for the outdoor Diesel and Shaman. Diesel was off the menu, and they were out of the Shaman. They were also out of the outdoor Purple Haze. At this point I was feeling desperate.
After I asked for a gram of Solar Power (and got it), the 'tender suggested the Thai. It was “so brown, so moist.” I trusted him. I paid €6 for the Solar Power and €10 for the Thai.
Ah, the Thai. It was like a block of baking chocolate that's been in the cupboard for a while; it's got the color, the solidity and the smell. I lit it up. A placid buzz came into view … and then faded into the carpeted recesses of my hotel room. It was as if the Thai had made it to the runway but couldn't find the power to get off the ground.
I tried firing up a second bowl, but it was hopeless. This pot was lame. What just about everyone's said about Thai in the 'Dam applies here: Move on.

INDEED... take a look at my daily basis smoke...! That's one of the reasons I have to go to DAM once a year...[attachment=0]BrazilianBrickWeed 005.JPG[/attachment

BRtoker: I'd be glad to take the Brazilian brick off your hands, if you're getting tired of it :)

strain: Solar Power (outdoor)
cs: De Graal
€: 6/gr
odor: sweet hay, weakly
A dry, astringent smoke. Left a grassy aftertaste.
Now I know why the 'tender was reluctant to pull this particular item out of the box. As sure as I am sitting here writing this report, this marijuana (if I may call it that) was unable to make me high.

This is not the best time of the year to get some decent Dutch outdoor bud. Since harvest time is mainly in september/october, most of it gets into the coffeeshops in oct/nov, and by the end of december the best stuff will be gone. After that, it's mainly 'hard to sell' leftovers, unless you're really lucky...
Most shops don't even bother to sell outdoors, since by far the most people are used to indoor quality and don't consider buying outdoors anyway.
Maybe Yo-Yo has some reasonable outdoor left, since they mainly sell it. Otherwise Anyday of HGF might be an option.

Xplore: My experience in February was pretty consistent with your point. A number of the outdoor offerings I noticed on menus from December were already out. This trip was the earliest in the year I've been able to make it to the 'Dam, though, so I made due with what outdoor varieties were left.
Yo-Yo, the unfulfilled love in my toking life. I have stopped by this shop on three different trips (including this one), and on each occasion it has been closed.
You'll be hearing about HGF and Any Day in my later posts ...

Loft and Republiek sell a good outdoor Viking.
5 euro's for 1 gram.
Really lovely smell.
Also the outdoor Purple Power for 4 euro's / gram at Chapiteau is quite good.

I concur on Purple Power. I really like it.
I've often wondered about doing an all outdoor trip but as i'll be there next week i guess i'll stick with indoor.
Ozric??? my bro in law used to be in a band called the Ozric Tentacles ha ha.

ozric, djreign: Like minds, like minds :) I'll be mentioning the Viking soon enough. Chapiteau … Are you referring to their Purple *Poison*? HGF sells a Purple Power; I had that in August. Excellent stuff then, and it looked even prettier this time around.

Brilliant thread... hope you made it to Sannenemertereng (sp?).
Our experience was not great, but I've heard their outdoor strains are nice.

TwoCanucks: I didn't quite make it to Sanementereng. I did manage to pick up an African variety, though, on a visit to Best Friends. I'll be mentioning that experience soon enough.
