€40 per night will be pushing it right up against the wall and strangeling it mate. When are you looking at going? as many places up there prices from the minimum when there is an event on.
A price search will possably return results etc. But thats only based on the "from" prices that hotels do. And if it's a holiday perion for Holland etc you will probably never get that "from" price for a private room in most places.
You really need a higher budget if you want a private room. Either that or cut a night off or goto a dorm in a hostal instead.

As Dave J said, 40E a night for a single room is not a lot. The prices of hotels in Amsterdam have been on the rise over the last few years. You should put your dates into
http://www.booking.com or
http://www.easytobook.com and see what hotels fit your budget. Once you have narrowed them down to a few post back here for some help.

Also worth mentioning is that even IF you were to find a private for €40 per night dont just take it like that without a second thought simply because it suits your budget.
As it could be cheap for a reason. No, not talking about reviews as they mean little to me for the lower end of accomodation grade. But the location may be an important factor. A place may be cheap for it's poor location in relation to what Amsterdam has to offer as much as the quality. You'd not want to be a good 2 mile out on the centrum area just to get that €40 per night deal would you.

A couple of miles out wouldn't be that bad DaveJ, only a 20ish minute walk....much more than that would start to wear on one though. The good public transport in the city could be usefull.

For the experienced Dam visitor yes I'll agree with you trad. But I get the impression the op has never been before or there knowledge of the place is very limited by lack of trips. We might be in a better position to help him if he\she gave a bit more information about weather or not they have been to Dam before and have any real requirements or other issues they might have etc.

To be honest if a person is travelling alone, unless they have the money to start with then a dorm or the camping sites are the only affordable option on a tight budget.
Yes, at about £100\€112 per day spends AFTER I've payed €30 per night for a dorm in my choice of hotel I could afford to pay the extra for a private room. But the extra €20 per night I'd need to spend for a private is lost on hotel facilities I'd loose out on and a good extra 2-3 grams per day of smokables.
I was going to go private myself upto about a month ago. But as the price checking websites only came back with the from prices, it turned from €45 or €50 per night private for the dates I wanted to more like €65 per night when checking the price for the dates. And I was'nt willing to give up €30-€35 per day spending money to put myself in a position where I'd have to keep an eye on what I was spending. If I did that I'd not be doing the crawls thats planned for next months 4-20 dates.

If you go down the hostel route you'd certainly not need to pay more than €30 per night tops. But paying less than €20 per night for a hostal your going to get a bit of a shithole and would probably have to pay extra for lockers, shower\towels, breakfast etc as well as a lack of other services\features.
€25-€30 tops will get you a decent hostel with breakfast, hot water, locker & towel included. I'm stopping at the Bulldog Hotel in a dorm and thats costing me €30 per night. It's not the cheapest but I'm more than happy with that for the price for what I get. You might also look at the Flying Pig as thats a pretty well rated place but for the more younger trippers.

The Bulldog Hostel isn't the cheapest hostel option, but it is the only 5 star hostel and I 'highly' recommend it

You'll be happy with the ITC, but be prepared to possibly be in the annex around the corner.
