Ok, so I got the OK to book my trip in November, FIRST TIME!!!! so I plan on being in the shops for most of my time, But I do have some minimal standards. I am looking for a cheap, not disgusting, single room with a private shitter. i just have a huge problem with sharing a bathroom. so far i found the Bellevue.. any suggestions?

Check out booking.com you can get some great hostels or hotels, smoke/non at decent prices. Im staying at http://www.hotelhortus.com/ It's about 15 min walk from the centrum but it's cheap and the rooms are good quality, My friend has stayed there about 8 times, it's not a private toilet but he says all facilities are cleaned daily and free brekfast! Its about 40 eur a night for a solo room.

thanks tpel.. Yes 5 days.. good guess. I will have to figure out if any are able to be used through any of the major booking sites on the web, i.e, expedia, travelocity. I am coming from the USA, and a package deal saves a ton of cash. the flights by themselves are around $1000 US. but i will check it out, thanks..

Actually it usually works out cheaper to avoid booking packages on Expedia and the like. Where are you coming from in the states that airfare is $1,000 in November? You should be able to score a flight for $800 or less for off season. Have a look at booking.com or hotels.nl or easytobook.com These sites constantly have the best rates for Europe. You don't mention a budget nor dates you'll be in town. To get the best suggestions we need that info.

very interesting ballou.. Pittsburgh, PA. coming in on 11/04/2011, ( that includes the +1 day for flight) arrive at 7 am. planning on staying 4 or 5 days. I would like to have the whole trip ( spending money, food included) for $2300 US .

It would probably be best to hold off a bit on buying your ticket. Airfare is high now because most people are booking summer vacations. You can use http://www.yapta.com to track flight prices. The best thing about the site is they use Kayak for the searches. Also periodically check this page http://www.independenttraveler.com/barg ... .cfm?CID=1 It usually list all the major airfare sales going on. Sign up for flight alerts on airfarewatchdog.com to get emails on some great deals. You can tell the site which routes you want alerts for. Also look at flying into Dusseldorf , I have saved several hundred dollars doing it that way. It's about a 2.5 hour train rides to Amsterdam. Train tickets are usually 38 euro round trip.

Looking at hotels with private bath for 4 nights/5 days I see the following on booking.com and easytobook.com

1* Vijaya Hotel $306 with breakfast and its smoker friendly
2* Greenhouse Effect $455 with breakfast and its smoker friendly
3* Avenue Hotel $431 with breakfast non-smoking

as Balou suggests i would book seperate myself you would save a ton of cash.

I hear that matty. I was nervous because all of the sites say " only a few rooms left" I don't want to be stuck in some crappy ass hostel. But this is probably a one and only time i will go. ( yeah. right) so i want to get it all booked and honestly , the price is not the issue, I just want to know it is a solid, true deal. wow, that sounded desperate.. maybe i will consider waiting..

All of the hotels I posted and many more allow cancellations. Just make sure you pick a refundable room. Then you could at least have that on hold.

Balou gives good advice wait on your airline ticket, you should be able to get at around $800 if u wait till bout 30-45 days before trip to book. As far as hotel my advice there is to book an apartment, it will be close to the same cost as a shitty little room...try apartmentpaul.com, he is very trustworthy and nice cheap apartments, I suggest apartment "B" off Haarlemmerstraat, a great location especially for a first timer.
