First time in the Dam with 10 people, need advice.

Hello, after reading loads of threads I decided to make my own to ask a few questions about how best to organise 10 people over a 3 day stay.
We will be staying in a hostel which is a 5 minute walk from the central train station.

My concerns so far are:
. How much will it cost to take the trams and would a travel pass be worth it?
. How big is the average coffee shop and will taking 10 people in at once fill a place?
. Where would you recommend going to drink pub/nightclub wise and what is the best cost effect way to get back to the hostel?
. Any recommendations of which coffee shops to try for people that are first time or not heavy smokers (myself excluded  )
. Attractions that are worth seeing
. Places to eat that won't break the bank
. Some general rules about the conduct of smoking in the city (Such as do people roll up in the streets or even smoke?)

I realise that my questions essentially ask you to plan my whole holiday, but I would greatly appreciate any wisdom you could share with me. :)

Well as far was strength, most good coffee shops will walk you thru some of their strains and tell you what kind of high they give. t'Nes is a great place to take your clan but alot of bars are bigger you just have to ask if you can smoke in them. I know we have had some big groups in t'Nes and it was fine. If you go there ask for dave and he will treat you well. Don't forget to sign the ACD book. Trams are worth it if you want to get around town quickly. Most places are walkable. Im sure some of the other peeps on here have some suggestions for you. Wow 10 people in a group. Have a great time.

Welcome to the forum.

What dates will you be in Amsterdam?
I'll post you on the Whos In Town page.

First timers get my S G Collins recommendation
I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.

How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.

Here is an idea for you. Split up into two groups of five. One group do Haarlemmeerstraat, the other group do Warmeostraat. In the afternoon/evening all meet up at Nes to compare notes and buds. From these findings you can have a good plan of attack for the next day. Both groups will have no need for a tram. Neither street is very long but each is cram packed with coffeeshops. If you want to wander beyond Centrum and the Jordaan, the cheapest and easiest way to go is rent a bike.

Another place for you to gather would be Prix D'Ami. The second and third floors have large rooms. Ten people wouldn't make a dent.

You can do a little practice shopping on the Coffeeshop Menus page.

We will be in the city from the 11th to the 14th.

The reason I asked about the trams was because the people I am travelling with are on a tight budget and are kind a lazy (even more so I'm guessing when they are stoned). I know that the trams stop at midnight, are there any taxi firms that could be recommended? preferably cheap ones with minivans.

Thank you for the advice so far it's been very useful.

You have been posted on the July Whos In Town page.
Bookmark your month's page for easy reference.

You can see who else may be in town during your stay.

Watch for Toke & Talks, I post them up to the last minute.
Or post one of your own. All I need is a date, time, and coffeeshop to post it.

By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.

1) theres plenty of tram info about online (price and routes etc), but i think its worth mentioning, that the centre of the city (which is pretty much what most tourists are concerned with) is easily traversable by foot. for reference, if you look on a map, the distance from central station to dam square is 10 minutes walking. this means the RLD, jordaan, harlemeerstraat, dam square, rembrandstplein, leidseplein etc etc are all walkable. ive walked form central station to the museum district plenty of times, takes maybe 30-45 mins.

2) the majority of coffeeshops dont have space for 10 to sit together on a table. and many coffeeshops would be filled up by 10 extras walking in the door. however, rest assured there are still plenty of places with adequete space, eg; downstairs in the dolphins, mellow yellow, damkring, rokerij near leidseplein etc. your best bet could be to go to the smoker friendly bars/pubs like stones, bulldog palace, lost in amsterdam etc. these are bigger bar venues and allow you to bring in your weed form elsewhere to smoke

3) my favouirte night out is warmoerstraat area. edge of the redlight district, lots of noise, lights, bars, coffeeshops, drunk people, prostitutes, etc etc. if you fancy a touch more classy/dutch night out 'de pijp' area in the south is a quailty place. some great bars, and a couple of brilliant coffeeshops (katsu especially). less of the drunk brits/yanks roaming around. leidesplein is commonly stated as the night out area, but its really not great. warmoerstraat is where the carnage is. (if thats what your after)

4) as for a good place for first timers, just make sure you like the vibe of the place, you trust the bud tender. theres no shame in deciding a place is not for you and heading back out. and be polite and conifdent in asking for what you want. theres definatly no shame in saying your not a big smoker. the staff dont want some one completely smashed in their shop in the same way you dont wanna pass out in the shop.

5) take a canal boat tour from damrak near central station. definatly a good way to see the sights. its a gorgeous city. theres plenty to do in town, and plenty written about it on various sites.

6) theres a food section in this forum which should help. there is an abundance of cheap (and sometimes very good) fast food/shoarma/falafel places in the centre. but as awlays the cheapest way to eat is buy ingredients form a supermarket and make your own meals.

My advice is try to break up the group into smaller numbers. Amsterdam is pretty small, and so are the restaurants, shops, etc. Tables for 10 are rare.

Have fun.

Take the ACD coffeeshop map with you, in fact print a copy for each of you, you are bound to lose a few. As there are a few of you a rough itinery may be helpful if you get split up, setting a couple of meeting points during the day can get you all back on track, especially after a few smokes. Or like FBN mentioned, split up and cover more coffeeshops and maybe find yourselves a gem of a smoke that you can talk about for many years to come.

Make sure you know mobile phone charges whilst your there. (I had a crazy mushroom trip a few years ago and didnt beleive that the group of people in front of me were my mates and I would only talk over the phone to them and not speak in person and only if they rang me... anyways..... Cost me £75 to pay off the boys fone bills.)

There are a few threads on here about roaming charges... I use Tmobile and their booster package things when travelling now. Worth looking into if you dont want to get a sim over there. They have an internet booster for a tenner which is plenty for maps and logging into here when you get completely lost

If you are looking to stay in vicinity of the Hostel i wouldnt worry about the tram passes, There's plenty of fun to be had on your doorstep.

Have a look at the ACD map, find where your digs are, find the coffeeshops closest to you then check them out using the Coffeeshops section of the forum. You can also use google maps to have a walk round Amsterdam before you go.

Good walking shoes are a a definate... And make sure they have been broken in well.. last thing you want is blisters.

Have fun getting lost and with ten of you its going to be a blast

It is illegal to smoke outside of a coffeeshop or your own home but I didn't see the police stopping anyone or me from doing it. Dispose of your roaches responsibly and don't blow smoke into peoples faces and you should be OK.

Is that this month then ,if the weather is decent you should be able to find seating pretty easily outside quite a lot of bars and coffee shops, great to watch the world go by.
