Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory Forums

Is there one part of the centrum (or the city) where there is a bigger concentration of live music venues? Think "old hippy", jazz, blues, world, bluegrass, anything BUT modern crap (hiphop, rap,heavy metal, and alternative all sound like noise to me). An area or even hotel suggestions in walking distance are appreciated.

Both are in the Leidseplein.

Both Paradiso and Melkweg have such acts. The Waterhole is quite low-budget but is also a good suggestion.

Amsterdam is a young and creative city, so most of the local music being made is what you consider 'crap'. You should open your mind to it!

I found Amsterdam straight up horrifying for music. Bars seemed better than coffeeshops, but the number of places that play super loud techno or emo or something (NOT modern music...all been around for 20+ years now) is staggering.

My objection isn't that 'new' music is played (even though I'm a sixties record collector/dj), it's that it's not good or cool new music. It's music for people with awful taste. So much autotuned metal! Even some mainstream indie like Arcade Fire or whatever would have been more acceptable than all the shit I heard- even though it's not my 'thing', at least you can sort of tune it out and enjoy a conversation.

I am not sure you are going to the places where good music is played. Today, Amsterdam (not to mention Belgium) has quite a reputation for very good and creative electronic music (house and techno, imho). You may not like this type of music, but not sure how that makes it bad! Google Juju and Jordash, Tom Trago, San Proper, Dekmantel, etc.

Of course, good EDM (electronic dance) is simply not played at bars or coffeeshops, its played at clubs like Trouw, Up, Studio 80, etc, usually starting at 1AM, so its not that easy to find.

Much of what is played in public (bars) is the same autotuned crap played in the US and UK, for sure.

Yes it does!

Seriously though- I don't mind that sort of thing existing, but in most cities there would be plenty of other types of music to listen to. Amsterdam just seems kinda narrow in terms of what is available. And if you want circumstances where even the most tolerant person would happily call techno 'a complete load of shit for stupid people with no taste', it would be in a tiny room, with said music turned up to eleven, when everyone is getting quietly stoned and trying to have a pleasant conversation.

Totally seeing a gap in the market for a Nederbeat/psych stoner cafe. Holland turned out some killer bands back in the day- Q'65, Outsiders, Les Baroques, Incrowd etc

Glad you are ok with it existing. I do find it funny how as time passes, those that supported controversial music at one time find them selves griping about the 'music of today'. Are you certain it was techno? I rarely hear it played in coffeeshops.

Regardless, if the shop is doing well, I doubt they are going to start playing Dutch music from the 60s, but who knows?

I'm not old, and I'm not griping about the music of today. I like plenty of modern music, make music, run a record label etc. All modern stuff. For me, music is a LOT more important than being controversial for a bit as a youth, then getting old and grumpy and hating youth culture.

Coffee shops would do well pretty much regardless of what kind of shit they pull. If they can get away with 3 euro coffees and cokes, they are going to get away with blaring too loud offensive dance music regardless of the fact large numbers of their customers are gonna think it sucks.

All I'm saying is some options would be nice. Amsterdam is a large city...I could probably have sex with Snow White and Seven Dwarfs if I wanted to...should be able to kick back and listen to The Sonics.
